TikTok Beauty Guru Skincare Mistakes – Please Don’t Do This ✖ James Welsh
Hello everybody, welcome back to my channel, where skincare is all about progression over perfection, because perfection doesn’t exist. Today we take another look at skincare TikTok, and you know what, I’ve actually been a little bit more active on TikTok, and I’m really, really enjoying it.
So join me over on TikTok and keep tagging me in these videos. So, before we take a look at the weird but wonderful world of skincare TikTok, a quick word from today’s sponsor. The sponsor of today’s video is Shoptagr.
If you don’t know what shoptagr is by now, they’ve sponsored me a few times. Every time I do a sponsor for them, I get a load of comments and a load of DM’s saying how much people love Shoptagr. So if you don’t know what Shoptagr is, it’s an app or Chrome extension so you never miss a sale, a price drop, a coupon code or when your favorite products are back in stock.
I mainly use Shoptagr on YesStyle.com for a few reasons, mainly to make sure that I can restock some of my favorite items, which are usually bestsellers. So they always run out of stock pretty quick, so I need to be the first one in there, to make sure I can stock up but also just to make wishlists.
I’m one of those people that will put a whole basket together, and then buy it, and kind of regret it, so Shoptagr allows me to make baskets, like almost wishlists, then kind of take time to look through it, see if there’s any price drops, kind of reassess what’s maybe a bit too pricey.
Shoptagr is super easy to download, you just head to the Google Chrome store, and install the Shoptagr button in your Chrome extension. Chrome only. Then just go shopping on your favorite stores. Once you see an item you like, or you want to add to a wishlist or you want to keep an eye on, and you just click the Shoptagr button to save, and what’s great about Shoptagr is, you get emails or push notifications through the app, to let you know when those products are on sale, has a relevant coupon code, or comes back in stock.
Shoptagr uses clever technology to scan the web for coupon codes, and apply them at checkout automatically. This is a desktop Chrome extension feature only, but it is, in my opinion, one of the best features.
They’ve also recently launched a cashback feature, when you shop using PayPal. So to save money, and make sure you get your hands on all the skincare exclusive, skincare drops, limited edition products, best sellers, check the link at the top of the description box and download Shoptagr.
Honestly, it’s only going to enhance your shopping experience, I promise. Okay, so let’s get into the TikTok videos, let’s take a look at the Chlorophyll drink trend that is going around TikTok, yeah.
This is, this is one of those, things that I feel like people want to try, because it looks nice, do you know what I mean, like, it makes a nicer video, and I feel like this is why the trend has caught on so quick.
But first of all, no, nothing you drink is gonna cure acne. That’s not how your skin works. Also, as for the “proven to” information, it says to improve and to reduce inflammation, reduces bacterial growth, subsides breakouts, prevents breakouts, heals wounds, oh what was the other one? Is an anti-aging remedy.
It’s, there’s not a lot of proof for this at all. But yes, drinking this will not help. If water alone can’t do it, adding Chlorophyll into your water isn’t going to cure anything on your face. Now, there are very, very limited studies that show what Chlorophyll can do for you when taken orally, but it is believed to potentially, maybe, possibly, boost your immune system, it’s an antioxidant.
It can aid in weight loss, and like, maybe give you a bit of energy. But again, very, very, very limited evidence to back any of that up. But it’s also recommended to take Chlorophyll in a supplement form, because once the liquid reaches your acids, it dies, or whatever it does, it’s not effective, it can’t survive.
We just went for a really long walk, and play time, and now you’re crying, for why? In skincare, you’ll often see this as Chlorophyll and Copper complex, which is mostly added to just add color, like that greeny color but it’s also kind of like a deodorant, so it kind of gives it a certain smell.
But again, there are very, very limited studies that, when applied topically, it can help be an antioxidant, maybe. You’ll also find this in Algae, which again, is just an emollient, there’s no real like, amazing, amazing benefits, and that’s when properly formulated in skincare.
So just literally putting it in water, and adding a lemon isn’t gonna cure acne in any way, in any way whatsoever. It looks very pretty though, so go for it, there’s no harm, no harm done. I was tagged in this one, I think a record amount of times, so let’s watch this video.
“Now, Pineapple, one of the world’s greatest skin care products, and Hollywood’s greatest secrets. What you’re going to want to do, is take one can of pineapple, strain the juice, and get as much of it out as possible, and let it dry on the counter overnight, then puree it, and add in four to eight tablespoons of sea salt.
Four to eight tablespoons of granulated sugar. The Bromelain will help eat away the caps of your pimples, scars, and blemishes, while the salt and the sugar will wick out the viruses and bacteria that cause pimples, and help exfoliate any dead skin, bringing you a new revitalized look, and younger look to your skin.
As you can see, it works really, really well. You’re only going to want to leave it on for a minimum of one to two minutes, the first time you try it. So you don’t eat too much of your skin away, and then once a week, you can work your way up.
God bless, thank you for your kindness.” I just realized, I just, I’ve obviously seen these before but I just realized he said that sugar can take away viruses, and bacteria. Was it sugar? Whatever ingredient is, none of that does that, it’s not gonna whip away viruses in your skin, sorry.
I don’t mean to laugh, but it’s like, it’s like when people say, they’re, they need to detox their skin so they drink smoothies. Okay, so what he said about Bromelain is kind of true, you’re gonna see it nowadays in lot of exfoliating products.
It’s not eating away at your skin, it’s, it’s exfoliating, right. First point, drying out pineapple, and then pureeing it, isn’t an extraction process. So that’s not how you would extract Bromelain first of all, from the fruit.
Dried fruit isn’t an extraction process. I’m not funny, I don’t know I’m laughing. Yes, extraction is a whole process that you really can’t do in your kitchen, it’s not that simple. Also, you can’t simply apply dried pineapple in any form to your face, and call it Bromelain.
Typically there isn’t enough Bromelain inside a pineapple or pineapple segments, or slices, to be effective in any way. Also Bromelain is usually taken from the stalk of the pineapple, as this is where the highest concentration of Bromine is.
Sorry my dog is down here, and she’s distracting me so much. Why are you here? But yes, you can’t just put the juice or pineapple on your face, and say it’s Bromelain. That’s why it’s extracted, and then put together in larger doses for supplements or in creams usually, or exfoliators or whatever they put in nowadays.
So I get the idea, but what he’s essentially made here, is a physical exfoliant. So you’re going to see a difference because, you are physically exfoliating your skin. So yeah, of course you’re going to see a difference but you know, this is like saying there’s Vitamin C in an orange then putting on your skin, you know, drying it out, and then pureeing it, an orange segment, and then saying, that’s your Vitamin C serum.
That’s not how skin care works. Just use Glycolic Acid, I don’t understand. It’s an exfoliant, you can get Glycolic Acid for £6 from the Inkey List I believe, The Ordinary is £7. Brie, I’m trying to work baby.
Speaking of pineapple, let’s, let’s just do this one again, because I’m, I’ve been tagged in this so many times, and asked if it’s true. “Okay guys, I bought this stuff from Sephora the other day, and it’s like an exfoliator, and it’s supposed to get rid of like, all the dead skin on your face, and I saw a girl use it on TikTok, and her skin was like coming off, like literally into her hands.
So, we’re gonna try it. Okay, this is what it looks like, and it is supposed to, you’re supposed to put it on your dry skin, and just massage it in until all of your dead skin comes peeling away. I’m kind of scared.
They should make me do the campaign for it, like it matches my nails. Okay, the video that I watched, it said don’t even rub it together… like is that skin? There’s no way.” No. “There’s no way that’s skin.
Wait, can you stop it… I took the… oh my god. That’s kind of gross, yeah. Guys, my skin feels so good.” There’s no way it’s dead skin, because it isn’t, it’s not dead skin. So I get tagged in these all the time, all the time.
So what is this? It’s not dead skin, it’s the ingredient usually Carvana, that’s already in the product that reacts with your oils, and creates these round little balls. There might be a little bit of dead skin in there, you never know, but it’s these round little balls of product that do a very gentle physical exfoliation, it’s usually not a chemical exfoliant.
I think nowadays people are putting like AHA’s in them, but it, it’s not dead skin. People think it’s dead skin, it’s not. This is just a more gentle physical exfoliant really. This particular product, I found very, very dry, and I have a whole review on it.
It’s not for me, I prefer my chemical exfoliants, but yes, it’s not dead skin. Let’s have a look at this clay mask video. Do you want to look at this in me? My god, please tell me you heard that, that was Brie farting.
Don’t look at it like you don’t know what happened. “A mask, and it’s supposed to suck the oil out of your pores. So I have a few pores here, but watch when you get to my nose. Oh my god, look at my chin.
” So clay masks, love them. As someone who’s very, very oily, I do find them super satisfying for instant kind of relief of oiliness, and to make my pores look smaller. Clay doesn’t suck stuff out, it has to be in contact with something in order to absorb it.
It’s like putting a bit of like kitchen roll, what do Americans call kitchen roll? Kitchen tissue? In a spillage, you know. Like Plenty. [Bark] Brie. So yeah, it doesn’t suck it, just kind of gently absorbs, so it’s not going deep down into your pores and withdrawing everything out of it.
So what you can see is, where you expect to see some more enlarged pores, where oil will probably sit on the skin a little bit more, like in the t-zone. It’s literally just blotting away the oil, and this is why, when you take it off, take off a clay mask, it’s taking away all that surface level oils.
If you leave on for too long, it can, you know, take a little bit more, but it usually leaves you with the impression of smaller looking pores, because you’ve taken all that surface oil away. There’s nothing magical going on here, I don’t think the lady in the video thinks, you know, is perpetuating that.
There’s just no, no deep sucking going on here. Okay, okay, let’s look at this one. This is interesting, this one. “Let me tell you guys a quick tip, okay, and it’s not ghetto, it’s creative. One of my favorite sheet masks is the Garnier Skincare, Nutri Bomb Milky Tissue Mask, the Hyaluronic Acid, and Almond milk one.
This is, this is so good. You got dry skin, it’s going to keep, it’s going to save everything, and I love this, but I don’t like using it only one time. So what I did was, I squeezed all the serum out of this, and put it in a bottle.
So now I just use it like a serum. I’m not ghetto, I’m creative.” So, all sheet masks are, is an occlusive layer, soaked in serum, and a huge selling point of a lot of sheet masks, especially Korean ones is that, one sheet mask packet contains one whole bottle of serum, and when you look at this, that’s pretty ridiculous.
Like, at what stage, without a sheet mask would you ever apply a whole bottle serum to your skin? Never, right? So this lady may be onto something here, like I want you to bear in mind though, that, I wouldn’t say this replaces your serum.
So a lot of sheet masks, again, are usually just hydrating or moisturizing ingredients. That one was a moisturizing serum, so yeah, she could use that for an added boost of moisture or hydration in her routine.
When it comes to masks having actives in, a lot of them have Vitamin C, and a lot of them are like Niacinamide ones now. I wouldn’t take all that serum, and put it into a bottle, and replace that with one of your normal serum, if that makes sense.
Because if you think about it, it’s not going to have that, enough concentration of that ingredient, in order to make an effective serum, it’s a one-time use. They’re going to put just enough of the active in there to treat your skin that time, not for overuse, and overuse, and overuse.
Also, we need to decant, decanter? The product into another bottle, packet, whatever. You do have to think about how the product’s been formulated. Products are often formulated to sit in a particular type of packaging.
If it’s an all-natural product, with no preservatives, you might want to keep an eye on how it’s, how it’s doing. If it’s growing mold, check the use by day, all that kind of stuff. But as an added quick little boost of hydration and moisture, I think she’s on to something.
But for all type of other serums, this definitely can’t replace your serums. Oh, okay, you know. Okay, we also have like a reply to that one. “Wow.” Okay, so I know, I know she’s taking the piss, I know.
Hang on. Wow…wait, what can I do? Wow… Ah, oh my god, oh my god. You know like, it’s literally nothing. Also, we know this girl is joking, because she’s using the Lux Skin LED Rejuvenation Wand, this doesn’t even claim to do this, it’s a LED color therapy wand.
She’s just showing us how stupid this is, I believe. But yeah, it’s really, really easy to do. I don’t, this is like false advertising right. It’s that easy. There we go, I’m gonna leave it there, on that ridiculous non-existent device.
Keep tagging me, come and follow me on TikTok, it’s the same Instagram handle as Instagram. I’m having a lot of fun over there, and I’ll see you over there.
