com here we go so we are talking about the anti-aging effects of earthing or grounding my name is dr. Emily splick ‘old I’m the founder of evidence-based fitness Academy a podiatrist to human specialist I practiced what I call functional podiatry out of New York City I spent a lot of my time writing and consulting traveling and traveling around the world helping to bring an awareness to the power of the human foot barefoot science and how our feet connect to the rest of our nervous system this is also led to the evolution of nabo so which is a textured proprioceptive mat and insoles which is used to optimize human movement human posture and human locomotion and I am a very huge advocate on getting barefoot getting out of your shoes and exploring the natural power of the earth so this is a topic that I actually have been quite familiar with it and a lot of the listeners are probably familiar with Earth Dean as well you probably understand that there is you know some natural healing powers or you probably just feel better when you take your shoes off and you you know go to the beach or in the water you know you’re just reconnecting with nature in many different ways so but I was at the American Academy of anti-aging medicine they do a global conference a couple times a year and I was at the conference in Las Vegas is past December and they happen to actually have a afternoon section that was dedicated to environmental medicine and super excited to see that grounding and earthing was one of those topics and they were speaking about all of the science and the latest research around earthing probably like a good 90 minute to our talk and it really started to kind of validate some of the stuff that I had read sometimes people say it’s bogus does it really you know have any science behind it it definitely does have science behind it my other passion outside of barefoot and human movement is anti-aging science so I really want to take a look at how we can use earthing or ground from an anti-aging perspective and then really what that means so if we’re thinking about how can we use reconnecting to the earth as a way to prevent the aging process we really want to think about well how do we age in the first place so there’s different theories in a gene I’m not gonna go into them in a crazy in-depth perspective but whether you’re looking at the free radical theory which is related to oxidative stress and inflammation or the mitochondrial decline theory which mitochondria are everything if you kind of follow anti-aging medicine and anti-aging science this is really kind of the current trend or what’s very I don’t know in vogue right now is optimizing human performance optimizing brain function and optimizing longevity through really mitochondria so everything that you’re going after how these little work houses that are found all over the human body every aspect of the human body is really dependent on mitochondrial function and then the third which is a cross-linking theory this is one that’s very close within podiatry because of a lot of the neuropathies that we treat some of the wound care or compromised wound care that we would treat or any of the connective tissue fascial tendon issues that we see in sports medicine really is related to cross-linking all of those common denominator of any of these theories of aging really are boiled down to oxidative stress and inflammation if you have a high inflammatory diet you are going to age faster if you have a lot of oxidative stress and free radicals whether that’s from eye EMFs from your cell phone and you sleep with your cell phone next to your head and it’s on and it’s gathering a Wi-Fi signal while you’re sleeping I mean that’s just crazy amounts of EMF that is just stressing our immune systems and our brain function and our hormone levels so everything is just dramatically being compromised the more urban that we become unfortunately we’re starting to see accelerated aging processes so again I had mentioned that the column or this category within the anti-aging medicine conference that they had was based around environmental medicine grounding and earth lean really would fall under environmental medicine and really looking at the natural healing properties and characteristics of the planet and of Earth that we could use to help us heal naturally or help us to avoid a lot of the chronic diseases that are on an uprise so Athena grounding environmental medicine respecting the planet and what the planet can provide us from a healing perspective is not new at all this was a very interesting quote that I pulled from one of the research articles related to earthing and this is with the Native Americans in the United States and kind of pulling this little little paragraph says is that it was good for the skin to touch the bare earth and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with their bare feet on the sacred earth they sat on the ground feeling close to being to a mothering power that there’s this energy or charge that is linked to Mother Earth the soil was soothing strengthening cleansing and healing so very fascinating there’s a lot of other kind of historical references that you could see of using a lot of natural properties to heal or in the prevention of disease so when we look at earthing and grounding this is used to describe the condition of being in direct contact with the earth hence the name earth or standing on the ground now the key thing here is that you are taking advantage of the natural name electrical charge of potential of the planet of the earth and this can be taken advantage of by walking barefoot on grass ideally if it is first thing in the morning when there’s a little bit of dew on the grass so you’re getting the water to help accelerate that electrical exchange between us you could think of us as a positive and the earth as a negative and now we’re trying to take away some of that excess charge or we’re trying to balance our charge within ourselves now if you do not have access to earth or ground swimming in the ocean swimming in a lake again water but again natural kind of connect to the earth and that charge or you can use specific equipment which I’m going to go into in the end whether it’s a sheet it’s a match it’s a bracelet you can put things underneath the soles of the feet so it’s almost like an insole that would go underneath the foot and those are ways that you can ground or take advantage of this negative charge of the earth while you are indoors now one of the most important things that I see from trying to match or trying to reconnect to the earth and what I feel that we’re getting disconnected from unfortunately with the more the more urbanized and the more technologically advanced that we become and the more like go-go-go and immediate gratification and things like that is unfortunately we are just pean disconnecting ourselves from the natural rhythm of the planets and the earth and the moon and the Sun right is that there’s there’s this kind of natural natural circadian rhythm that you know kind of a vibration that her body should be going through which normal spikes within hormones and melatonin and you know our heart rate changes at different times and things like that that when you disconnect from that there becomes a lot of stresses and aging in very complex ways within the body and I definitely see this with myself in the sense that I’m travelling so much and I know that sometimes there’s a few posts no names to be mentioned about not having jet lag like jet lag doesn’t exist but even though you may not perceive the sensation of jet lag when you’re crossing so many time zones you’re still inherently messing up the circadian rhythm of of you and there’s ways to kind of hack that but the more that you keep crossing time zones especially the way that some of the educators and myself are traveling is that I mean it’s inherently aging me on such a faster rate because of how much I’m traveling in all the time zones that I’m crossing and then airplanes in themselves is just like a massive radiation box so you know what are ways that we can kind of disconnect from the advances within technology to feed and optimize natural healing so want to go back to this which is this is another aspect of it which is really important and this has to do with electricity or electrical charge within ourselves and that a lot of the communication that exists between cells within our body are actually electrical and this is called piezo electric communication now not to make it too confusing but these ties or electric communications that exist within our within our body in between cells is extremely fast so if we want to go back to how we look at human movement and optimizing human movement is the lot of the communication that goes on within our body to optimize that very fast communication between cells and fashion and you know anticipatory stimulation and all the other things that I speak about it’s happening so fast that to optimize it it has to be based around this piezoelectric which happens to be associated with water so another aspect of optimizing human performance or movement however you’re focused and how you can integrate the benefits of grounding and earthing is that your fascia and your connective tissue has to stay hydrated and when we start to lose some of that hydration within our connective tissue and within our body and each of the cells that is full of water starts to kind of lose some of that hydration it actually slows the piezoelectric communication which is associated with all types of aging and disease and compromised immune function etc so grounding and earthy and also helps to optimize the way that water crosses these cell membranes to allow the optimal charge to allow piezoelectric communication whew I hope that was not confusing okay so we’re going on so when it comes to grounding which is us connecting to the earth to optimize this charge is negative charge and really to balance our charges within ourselves is there’s certain surfaces that are better for grounding and then there’s certain surfaces or materials that will actually block grounding so when it comes to the best surfaces for actually grounding this is you taking off your shoes and socks you’re going completely bare foot you’re standing on sand the beach if it’s the part of the sand and is wet you’re going to get better grounding water is always helping to optimize the effects of grounding and earthing grass again first thing in the morning with that morning dew on it dirt or soil again moist obviously going to accelerate this this one is interesting concrete so the way that I ground just because I’m in a little bit of an urban jungle gym unfortunately fortunately I don’t know how you look at it is on ground on concrete so I will take my shoes off when I’m waiting for the for the traffic lights and it’s amazing how immediately I feel in effect if I’m starting to feel like a little bit of like a stiff lower back and like my feet are so tired just because I’m standing and run around the city all day and then I take my shoes off and I stand on the bare concrete waiting for the light I feel an immediate change and shift within the energy of my body I apologize for my dog um now the thing is that if you’re standing on concrete or brick it cannot be painted so that paint is going to block some of that effect now leather so the Mocs moccasins that the Native American quote that I mentioned in the beginning the leather is actually going to allow you to continue to ground so that’s good now these are some bonus grounding techniques that you want to kind of take note of possibly is let’s say if you are shaving now shavers and electric razors and things like that they don’t they’re not grounded so if you want to stay grounded while you’re shaving this is on the dr.
Mercola website is when you’re shaving touch the metal faucet as you’re shaving and it will actually ground you which is really interesting jump in your water just makes me really nervous if you are flying remember I said that flying has such high radiation oh my goodness I think they had said I read somewhere that it was every think every hour that you’re on a plane is like an x-ray or something like that which I mean that’s cumulative right just freaks me out of the radiation on like if your childbearing age and you fly a lot well just makes me so nervous just thinking of all the x-rays that I’m taking in my life seeing patients so if you’re flying and you want to rounded is you take off your shoes and you’re soft so you have your bare feet and then put it on the metal at the base of the seat in front and the person in front of you so then you’ll actually stay grounded throughout the flight super cool idea I’m gonna try that on my next flight which I’m actually taking tomorrow morning huh so there you go now these are surfaces that do not ground carpet wood vinyl rubber plastic evie a most of the shoes that we wear unfortunately do not ground us so they’re creating a disconnect and they’re actually keeping it slightly different charge within our body versus what is on the earth you’re actually kind of if you look at pictures of it and if you are grounded you actually get this like an umbrella field that is protecting you from an electrical perspective right and then if you have shoes on instead of being protected by that electrical field you are the electrical field like your body within is the electrical field so staying grounded obviously very important okay so this is today’s reality right unfortunately most people are not in direct contact with the earth if they’re wearing shoes constantly and they’re stressed out and they’re always on their phone and they’re in these bright you know office building lights and then they go home to their high-rise apartment that has wood floors or carpets and they walk around right so you could start to see that most people those of us who are listening are probably the exception to this because you have an interest in this but unfortunately most people are very much disconnected from the natural healing electrical charge of the planet and this is starting to create a very massive the cumulative epidemic on Aging inflammatory oxidative stress process now this was also interesting is that elevation has a huge effect on health as well again in an urban setting so let’s say if you are in a high-rise apartment and you live on the 20th floor you are 2020 floors up disconnected from the earth right so the higher you go the more disconnected you are and the more electrical charge you are actually experiencing which is crazy so I’m just gonna read this here so for every meter you are above the ground 300 volts of charge will build up in your body if you’re in a second-story home your charge would be 1,000 volts on average and this increased charge may increase your risk of health problems fascinating so if you are on the 20th floor matching your charge that is another reason why I need to keep all of my apartments for as long as I live in an urban setting low okay so this one here saw 2009 study 40% increase in stroke in people who lived in multi-story homes which was gang you could just start to say there was a disconnect from the Earth from the ground super cool just another way that you can start looking at this and really seeing some of the power between the earth and us creating these chronic disconnect then unfortunately we are seeing in today’s society so what is the effect of chronic detachment from the healing powers of the earth well guess what it is an epidemic on chronic disease chronic oxidative stress and chronic inflammatory conditions so what can we do is start to explore the benefits of earthing by understanding the benefits between or behind earthing some of the science and giving you some of this valid research that you can share with your clients and your patients to chart start to get them to even include just 15 minutes of earthing will start to create some great effects first topic that I want to speak about is so everyone is stressed out in New York I mean super stressed out we’re just go go go gotta answer every single email and the way that we start to see this and the measure of stress can be through heart rate variability and then I’m going to talk about cortisol levels so now when you start to get stressed out you’re going to start switching your autonomic nervous system into the fight-or-flight sympathetic nervous system when you do this you’re also stimulating the HPA axis so the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and what this does is you start to get an increase in cortisol and the last webinar that I did I spoke about how chronic stress in chronic stimulation of the HPA axis actually downregulated and compromised the function of the hippocampus which is part of the brain that has to do with memory so super fascinating as far as some of the effects of chronic stress and now we’re looking at some of the other effects of chronic elevated cortisol we know that that leads to central adiposity that leads to accelerated cardiovascular disease etc so how can we use grounding an earthing as part of someone’s integrative plan of how to address their stress so heart rate variability I also happen to mention on this brain optimization webinar and heart rate variability is measured by what’s called the inter beats interval and the more variability that your heart rate has actually the higher your vagal tone or the more resilient your autonomic nervous system is so you actually want to strive for a high heart rate variability your heart rate variability can be used as a marker of again autonomic nervous system balance it’s a way to measure stress like so how stressed out are your clients or your patients and then it’s a way to or to track some of that resiliency so this 2011 study found that 55 minutes of grounding every day reduced the sympathetic nervous system activity increase the parasympathetic nervous system obviously increased heart rate variability increase their vagal tone decrease this is a marker of stress right this translated to the reduced cardiovascular stress and associated risk factors so that is excellent this is a way I work with a lot of athletes and a aspect of endurance athletes is overtraining so if you’re trying to help your endurance athletes avoid overtraining and how that affects stress that’s a form of stress right you would measure their heart rate variability you can start to integrate grounding into their protocol the recovery protocol to help to optimize recovery um and talk about that a little bit how it does that but also to control and manage the effects of overtraining on heart rate variability and their stress which is super cool alright so now cortisol this is the other way that we can measure stress so I just mentioned an HPA axis chronic HPA axis stimulation and really that’s marked by cortisol so there’s chronic elevation in cortisol probably many of your clients have elevated levels of cortisol 2012 study by Chevalier again he took quite a few of these studies which is quite interesting when you look at the research from that six weeks of grounding at night reduced cortisol levels back to baseline another aspect is 2004 study from that grounding while sleeping reduced nighttime cortisol secretion and normalized circadian cortisol release so this is one of the biggest things that when you start looking at earthing and why I wanted to mention the thing about the circadian rhythm is that you’re trying to get back to the natural rhythm of the earth and the planets and the Sun and the moon and the way that the earth is rotating right that there’s there’s a rhythm to to earth to energy right there’s an energy and a vibration and a flow and you want to be matching that you want to stay connected to that because there’s a natural you know we we came from the same energy of the earth not to get too deep over here but you want to match that rhythm so why disconnecting you start to lose that natural circadian rhythm and all the hormones so this is really exciting to see this as well what this will also translate into is this so if you have trouble sleeping sleeping with a grounded blanket or sleeping while integrating grounding into your lifestyle is going to also help to improve your quality of sleep the more sleep you get the more you’re going to recover your brain you recover your body you get into this natural rhythm of melatonin your quality of life your stress your mood your anxiety depression I mean sleep is just like massive if you don’t get sleep you are just aging so much faster bottom line so improve sleep so this study roschmann demonstrated that melatonin increased in average of 66 percent after sleeping rounded for six weeks awesome another study chevalier here and his research studies found that sleeping grounded was actually one of the first interventions to dispersed interventions discovered that speeds the recovery from pain after delayed onset muscle soreness so chevalier found that reduced inflammation and creatine kinase after grounding from those who are experiencing Dom’s super super cool stuff on improved sleep reduced inflammation improved immune function enhanced melatonin decreased cortisol or your matching the rhythm of the cortisol to the planet I am sold on earthing I hope you or as well this is one that’s really close to podiatry and appropriate with podiatry this has to do with circulation but this is important for everyone so the benefit of circulation with earthing key thing here is that it’s actually going to reduce what’s called blood viscosity I’m gonna do this so that you guys don’t read the thing so blood viscosity so by grounding and earthing remember I said it had to do with the electrical and the water and it kind of changes the water balance within the body that’s gonna translate also into your circulatory system so the higher the viscosity so almost think like thicker stickier blood or there’s going to be more resistance that your blood is going to have to go through to get into your tissue the higher resistance the heart of the heart has to pump to push past that resistance so you want to have low resistance and then have a low viscosity if you want to be really watery for just the sake of simplicity here and then the easier it is to get the blood to where it means to go the more you’re going to get what’s called perfusion so tissue perfusion skin perfusion so the skin perfusion is also good so in an area where they’ve actually done quite a few studies is with healing wounds if you want to shoot me an email education at a BFA fitness.
com I’ll send you some of the research studies where they actually showed an integrated grounding as part of wound healing programs and protocols which again that would be huge so much with diabetic wounds diabetes is total inflammation and glycation and cross-links and then their perfusion is compromised because of all of the above that I mentioned that healing wounds is one of the biggest concerns with diabetes so they actually saw accelerated wounds kaeleen because of enhanced perfusion with grounding awesome so the way that you measure skin perfusion is through what’s called thermography or infrared cameras in a sense and what is doing this is measuring skin temperature goes five millimeters deep and it’s showing you you can see kind of a before and after of rounding on what it’s doing to the circulation now this is interesting skin is regulated primarily by the hypothalamus by the brain autonomic nervous system sympathetic nervous system so it’s also a way to measure vagal tone and stress so if you’re noticing a compromised skin perfusion or you actually didn’t think about this compromised skin profusion or circulation to the skin is someone who’s chronically stressed out and in a fight-or-flight state they’re actually gonna age faster also from their skin or from a wound care perspective they’re not going to heal wounds as well because it actually compromises the skin perfusion hugely applicable and interesting so this is the way that it would actually show up so these are the thermography and what you can see is so here there’s obviously the rest of the toes are not down here right so this is after one hour one hour of grounding you can actually see that the circulation went down all the way into the tips of the toes now that’s pretty far from the heart so you do need some good perfusion to get all the way down here but especially in like our patients that have wounds in the toes you have to have awesome circulation good perfume profusion grounding would be awesome for these people here this is another one now what this is showing that I want you to take note of is look here do you see how that the dark the red is going to be the higher profusion this is actually showing and associating some of the enhance lymphatic function so if you’re not familiar with the lymphatic system in the lymphatic function this is also optimal to healing and recovery as well if you’re familiar with dr.
perry nicholson of stop chasing pain he’s actually speaking at the barefoot strong summit in New York City September 22 23 on the lymphatic system so please do save those dates check it out as well and come learn more from him about perfusion so what some of the other benefits these are additional benefits improved immune function accelerated wound healing improve mood and a little bit well-being and improved thyroid function there are huge benefits I hope just in that few little research studies that we had referenced that you guys have seen seen enough heard enough that you’re you’re ready to integrate grounding into your lifestyle start recommending it to your clients and kind of really now going into the last section that we want to go into which is about how do we ground so we can round the easiest way earthing grounding if you like calling it or seeing instead you absolutely can is to get your shoes off and get barefoot and get on the ground here I love this picture because it has the water in the rain with it totally accelerating that grounding and earthing however let’s say your client is 100 percent resistance against this against this or you’re not in an environment where you can do this then you can start to look at grounding products so you can go to earth e.
com is one on the next slide I’m actually gonna have another one and you can find different products from a mattress pad and then you just ground it into the outlets if you have an outlet in your home I know every country is a little bit different on how the outfit outlets look but the grounded outlets you’ll know what it is in the u.
s. it’s the third prong on the bottom that’s rounding it I honestly don’t know actually if in other countries you have a grounded outlet if you do and you just want to type it in just let me know if I’m curious as well just I’ve been in the chat like yes in Australia we have grounded outlets I don’t I don’t know I shouldn’t know because I travel all the time but you can get a mattress pad you can get a bracelet you can get a pad for the desk you can get a small pad that you can actually stand on so if you have a standing desk or you can put it under your feet if you are sitting at work take your shoes off and go on to the pad remember your rubber and your plastic soles EBA things like that do not allow you to ground they actually block the grounding effects I actually have a blanket that is it’s a F IR so it’s a far infrared blankets and I met them when I was at the NFL Combine and the blanket grounds just like the mattresses and it’s absolutely amazing I sleep with it every night what I would say is a baseline and what the recommendations when you start looking at the research is ideally ideally from a health benefit perspective is if you live in a high-rise apartment especially the higher that you live in live up or if you are in an urban environment and you have lots of lots of Wi-Fi routers in your vicinity thinking like apartment complexes you are just completely surrounded by EMS and the radiation that comes off of that I would say hundred percent you want to sleep with a grounding mattress a grounding hat or you could get the blanket I actually don’t know the difference in efficacy between the mattress and the blankets and then same thing at your office if you are working with a computer and around anything that puts off EMF such as Wi-Fi boxes and routers you would want to be mindful of that if you happen to live not in an urban setting or not in a high-rise building and you are able to be on the earth for 15 minutes every day I would recommend that if you still ground with grounding products I would still recommend doing the actual earthing barefoot on the earth 15 minutes a day if you can just because I think there’s a lot of natural energy that you get not just the electrical grounding aspect but just other properties that are so important by being outside sunlight vitamin D fresh air stuff like that so if you want to learn more information please check out these three websites barefoot Grambling calm grounded calm and earthing calm if you guys have any questions you may of course type those in if any of you are currently grounding and earthing and make it part of your lifestyle or have any stories related to it please type those in and share those as well or you can of course email me and share some of that information and if you don’t mind me sharing it with our network and just start building an awareness in those populations that might not be well informed or open to the idea of earthing or grounding usually when I mention it to my patients that are quite surprised on what it is and also surprising is that when I mention it in a lot of my workshops a really small percent of people actually understand what it is and what’s happening you know and it’s really really interesting I would say the most powerful aspect of it from my perspective of where I’m interested on it has to do with the circadian rhythm part and partly because I’m just flying so much and then really what’s happening because of all the airplanes and the radiation so to me grounding is really important within my own personal health and well-being and how I look at anti-aging for myself as you guys think of any questions that you might have I want to mention real quick on bear strong summer is our fourth annual one it is in New York City and we have an amazing line-up of educators and presenters also on September 21st which is the pre-conference Friday we are doing a foot cadaver lab so this will be an intrinsic foot function cadaver lab which will be at the podiatry school in New York City there are only a few places left on that one so please do check that out if you want more information if you want the PowerPoint handout or any of the research articles that we referenced you may email us at education at ebf a fitness.
com if there are no questions then everyone have an amazing day don’t forget to take off your shoes and stay connected get grounded and I will hopefully see you guys on another EB if a webinar take care
