Skincare Ingredients that work better together
hi friends welcome back to my channel or if you are new here i’m dr alexis i’m a board-certified dermatologist i have a background in cosmetic chemistry i take all of my knowledge and deliver it to you so that you can make the best skincare decisions today we are doing a highly requested video this is a skin care ingredients that work better together so in the last video we talked about ingredients that you should not mix because they either cause too much irritation inflammation or they counteract each other this time we’re going to talk about things that actually work as synergistically meaning that they work better together the first one that we’re going to talk about is zinc oxide and iron oxide this one we’ve touched based on on a previous video but they just work so beautifully together that i had to mention it again so zinc oxide and iron oxide actually covers more uv or photo protection you have better uv a coverage when you add that iron oxide also you now have visible light coverage so you may recall from my previous video but zinc oxide and iron oxide also have the additive benefit of being better for pigmentation so those who have melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation will receive the benefit of reduced hyperpigmentation when using this combination some of my favorite sunscreens that include both zinc oxide and iron oxide are the iliac sun serum also i really love the skinceuticals uv fusion and lots of others like bubbleplenix that i mentioned in the other video so if you aren’t sure please check out that other video because i go through a lot of different sunscreens with that combination moving on but not too far on because sunscreens work better when combined with antioxidants this because sun protection by itself really helps to fight off the free radicals that are caused from uv damage of the sun rays if you add that with antioxidants you now have the combined effects of more antioxidant protection therefore those antioxidants are going to neutralize those free radicals even more than what could just be done with a sunscreen so the way that you would do this is not to dilute your sunscreen with an antioxidant my recommendation for this would be to apply your antioxidant prior to putting on your sunscreen so something like a vitamin c serum before putting on your sunscreen you’re going to have that additive benefit of fighting off those free radicals and also additional uv protection but more importantly sunscreen is made to form a film on the top of your skin it’s not really so that things can penetrate through so you may not get very many antioxidant benefits if you’re going for a sunscreen that actually has antioxidants in there all right guys i know that you’re like enough with the sunscreen ladies so on to the fun stuff the anti-aging of benefits though it is your number one anti-aging defense another way to fight the anti-aging process even more is to combine bacochiol with retinol this is found in a lot of different products and my recommendation would be to find a product that’s already having the two combined together for you no playing chemist in the bathroom with these two ingredients there are actually plenty of products on the market that already combine because y’all with retinol so these two powerful ingredients combined together have proven to have enhanced anti-aging of benefits and an increased intolerability of the retinol that’s right boccuccio can actually help to increase the tolerability of retinols so some of the products that do this very well are notorium and polish choice so if you’re really looking to up your anti-aging gang without additional irritation you really want to go with the boccuccio and retinol combination another combination that’s really good to fight the anti-aging process is actually boccuccio and salicylic acid bokugeo and salicylic acid have been proven to help with increasing cell turnover and also collagen production salicylic acid also plays very nicely with niacinamide in fact research studies have shown that the combination of these two ingredients decreased the amount of acne lesions present on the skin they increase the tolerability of using other ingredients that help to fight the acne process they also help to better regulate oil production because niacinamide works on the sebaceous or oil glands at a superficial level and salicylic acid can really dig deep and work at a deeper level therefore you have even more oil regulation and therefore less acne also niacinamide and retinol have been proven to play very nicely together niacinamide will actually help to increase the tolerability of retinol and the powerful combination of these two ingredients together have actually been proven to decrease hyperpigmentation and increase cell turnover my recommendation for this one is to actually make it personal everyone’s journey with retinol or retinaldehyde or retinoic acid are all very different it depends on your skin sensitivity your tolerability and the amount of years that you’ve been using the product what i would recommend is to apply your niacinamide prior to putting on your retinol so this is the one exception that i’m going to make to not playing chemist in the bathroom speaking of powerful combinations to help fight hyperpigmentation tranexamic acid kojic acid and vitamin b or niacinamide has been proven in clinical research to really help with the reduction of hyperpigmentation whether that’s pih or melasma some products with this powerful combination includes entiages brightening serum and deer skin now that option may be a little bit expensive so a more affordable combination would be in glucosamine and niacinamide and this can be found in pallas choice niacinamide boost now vitamin c vitamin e and ferulic acid have been known to be quite the powerful combination this is really great for boosting your collagen production fighting off a free radicals and you need the combination of the vitamin e and ferulic acid to help to stabilize vitamin c but also to give it that extra added boost of collagen production so what i would recommend is going with skinceuticals i know guys this one hurts because it’s a pricey item there is another choice which is the advanced skincare vitamin c e and ferulic acid combination research shows that when you combine vitamin c with vitamin e and ferulic acid you actually increase collagen production by four to eight times this is a lot guys and this is what keeps us looking beautiful youthful and glowy so i would say undoubtedly you want to include this into your skin regimen but also vitamin c has been proven to boost the uv protection that happens with sunscreen so with sunscreen and antioxidants that increased photo protection cannot be beat on the same note vitamin c and centella estetica has been proven to increase collagen production by threefold a really great option for this would be the claire’s freshly juiced another really great combination is green tea and caffeine this has actually been proven to have really great antioxidant effects and it helps to boost the photo protection against uvb induced skin cancers a good option for this would be the ordinary caffeine solution or liver clinic’s power of three serum now one of the most important combinations is to make sure that your moisturizer has cholesterol ceramides and fatty acids this is really important for a healthy skin barrier a healthy skin barrier is a beautiful and glowing skin barrier and it will allow you to accept all of these active ingredients that we just talked about much more effectively so some really great options for this would be good old cerave skin fix skinceuticals lipid repair but that is a little bit pricey or xerified now this is a prescription moisturizer but it is fantastic all right guys so those are powerful combinations that will
