Ranking AKA JUDGING Celebrities I Met As A Stylist & Skincare Routine
Hello everybody, welcome back to my channel, where skincare is all about progression over perfection. Because, perfection doesn’t exist. Today, I have something a little bit different for you. I’m gonna do my skincare, it’s the morning, it’s really hot today, really warm today.
Well, for the UK it’s warm. So I’m going to be concentrating on lighter layers of hydration, all that kind of stuff, and sunscreen. But I thought I’d share a little bit of my past with you. And today, I’m going to be ranking celebrities that I’ve met from like nice people, to really not nice people at all, whatsoever.
So, we’re gonna be ranking them by ‘Iconic’, these are people who were just the best people I’ve ever met. ‘Decent’, as in they were finel, no, ‘S’nice’, it was nice. Then we have ‘Meh’, which is like, I didn’t really feel anything about them or for them, and then just the worst, the rudest f*cking people.
And I feel like there’s a big jump there because that’s how celebs tend to be. So, before we get into that, let me let, me tell you… sorry, I’ve got a new dressing gown on, and there’s fluff going everywhere.
Let me tell you a bit of my history and how I even met these celebrities. So, I’m going to go in with a toner first of all. This is the Frameless ELMT Centella and Polysaccharide Advanced Calming Solution.
I’ve been trying this toner, I love it, it’s very, very nice. Just adds some hydration back into my skin. So when I lived in London I was a personal shopper. Personal shoppers/ stylist for both Topman and Asos.
com. They were quite different though, because Topshop/Topman was, I was just Topman, was purely like a VIP shopping suite, an experience. So as well as like your everyday customers who booked our service, we get VIP’s and celebrities who just wanted to shop.
And back in that day Topshop and Topman, Oxford Circus I worked in, rest in peace, was not just a place to shop but it was like a tourist attraction. Like everyone went there, they were the height of fashion, retail fashion, they sponsored fashion week, they had a lot of money as well.
So often celebrities would be invited to come and shop for free. They basically pick out some stuff with, most of the time no budget, and we’d send them off with a load of free clothes. So we would often get the celebrities in and we’d either pull stuff for them, make them a whole room of clothing choices, or we’d walk around, show them around the store, pick clothes for them, hold on to anything that they wanted us to carry, just help them navigate the store.
Get stock, all that kind of stuff. That was mainly Topman. Asos was more of like, they were trying to make us like fashion influencers and it didn’t really work. So I’m gonna leave like the big, big A-listers till last but let’s start with the first celebrity.
I think this is actually the first celebrity that I met in the job at all, and that is… I have to write his name down because I keep forgetting his name Jesse Metcalf. He is the gardener from Desperate Housewives.
I’m actually going to go in with another toner for the dewy effect, and a bit of light exfoliation. This is the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow PHA BHA Pore Tight Toner. I love this stuff, this is my second bottle, uhhh third? So he came in unannounced, which is absolutely fine, it wasn’t an issue whatsoever.
Said he was getting harassed on the shop floor which, to be honest, I don’t think he was. This was quite a few years after Desperate Housewives and he wasn’t really famous for anything in the UK. So I was like, yeah sure, whatever, come in, what do you need help with? Oh for legal reasons everything I’m gonna say in this video is just a story.
And he just really wanted some basics really, some basic stuff. And he actually asked for a discount. I was like, yeah let us phone our PR and press team and see what we can do for you. And they were like, give him, give him £100 worth of free stuff.
Which sounds really awful but that wasn’t a lot, you know. Topman actually had this list, I think it’s like Topman top 50 or top 100. And it was a list of people who had a black card which meant they get everything for free, and then the other celebrities who weren’t on that list they’d just kind of give, throw out a random budget depending on how popular they were.
He wasn’t very popular, in fact the staff got more discount than he did, more free stuff, but you know. And he was very pedantic about the whole thing, he wanted to spend his whole budget which is absolutely fine but we were swapping clothes in and out to try and hit it on £100 exactly.
He wasn’t overly friendly, he was kind of like, no direct eye contact which is fine but I find it weird when people don’t make eye contact. He has his sunglasses on the whole time which is something I hate when you’re talking to people, because I like eye contact.
And he was just kind of a bit like meh. So he wasn’t rude, he was in no way rude. I don’t even know if he does anything anymore, is he famous in America still? I don’t know. I’m gonna put him in ‘Meh’ because I don’t really think about him in any way, whatsoever.
And at the time I was like. And usually when we had good celebrities we’d go to the whole team be like, oh my god so-and-so just came in. I don’t think I ever talked about him. Next up, we’re going to do a little bit of serum.
This is the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops. I love this stuff, that instant glow that it gives your skin whilst all the ingredients in it actually work in the long run, to help keep your skin looking like this, it helps to even out skin tone.
Sorry, I did trim my beard so I might have hairs everywhere. So the next one is Ellie Goulding. I don’t know, she’s, again, a celebrity in America but she is a singer and she was lovely. She was so, so nice she bought a friend in to do a bit of shopping, a guy friend.
Not with her, like I was just in the room at the time, kind of chatting with her. My friend and, and colleague Angel was actually assisting her and helping her out. So she was so, so nice. But I have this really weird thing, I find people singing in real life are really awkward.
Really, really awkward. It’s different if I’m going to watch like a band play live or a singer or whatever, but if you’re just like relaxing or hanging out and someone starts singing it’s really awkward.
And especially when they close their eyes it becomes even more awkward, it’s the weirdest thing. And you’d be like talking to Ellie Goulding and all of a sudden she’d just be like… or whatever her voice does.
And it’s like, she was a good singer but I was like, like mid conversation. It was very, very awkward. She was very awkward but so lovely again. So lovely again. Not much to say about her but she’s S’nice.
She was a very nice person. The next one, all of One Direction. So we did a lot of X Factor styling, Britain’s Got Talent. Whether it’s on the backup dancers, also. They’d have like a makeover episode that they used to have, and they’d come into Topman and we’d pull clothes for them, or the stylists would come in and pull clothes, or we’d be asked to pull ahead for the stylist.
So we always met the X Factor contestants. Obviously the year that One Direction were on it their stylist, she was lovely, I forgot her name now. Used to come in and pull clothes for them all the time.
Then they stuck with this stylist, they became more and more popular, and they still come in and get their clothes all that kind of stuff, and fittings. So we met all of them, and they are all so, so nice.
So nice. In particular, Harry Styles, who is one of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever met. So relaxed, just felt like a normal customer, like a normal client. Didn’t demand anything, didn’t want anything, wasn’t acting all like, you know.
And he’d come in when there was like normal civilians in the room and just relax, and do whatever it is him and his stylists were doing. Niall, Hor… Niall Horan? I actually had to pull off the shop floor, because he was shopping like normal and I saw people were starting to follow him.
And I was like, hi this is what I do, I work in personal shopping, do you want to come in the lounge where it’s a bit more private and you can shop in peace kind of thing. And he was like, oh no I really don’t want to be a bother, I don’t want to put anyone out.
I was like, honestly, like it’s my job like, I’m here to do that like, so please come in it’s, it’s not a bother at all. And he was so polite, so, so polite. Didn’t want other sizes, he just wanted to do his own thing, got on with it, and was insanely polite.
Just like any other person would be, right. I then actually met… oh god, oh my god what’s his name? One Direction members… Liam I met back in those days but then he also went to a gym that my friend used to work at, so I’d see him working out and when I would go and work out occasionally.
Again, really nice guy. They were all so, so nice. So, so nice. So all of One Direction, I’m actually going to put them in ‘Iconic’, because they are iconic as a group, and they were just the nicest people I’ve ever met.
The next step is going to be moisturizer, and again, I’m going for a Glow Recipe Watermelon product because they’re just so light layers but still give you that hydrated look and feel to your skin. Again, it’s hot outside and I want to moisturize but use sunscreen so this is going to give me that nice deep hydration, and moisturization without being too heavy.
On that note, I also met Sam Stiff, Stiff? Smith. Because their stylist would come in to pick some clothes for them when they were more in that kind of like, they used to wear suits all the time and they’d be a little bit more like, I guess like classic looking, I guess until they really came into themselves, and probably have more say about their style.
At the time this was before their debut single. Debut? Do people use that in the non K-pop world? Their first single. And they were just polite, didn’t really say anything, quite shy to be honest with you.
Sam Smith, they’re gonna go in ‘Meh’ because they, they wouldn’t, I didn’t really speak to them. I didn’t really hang around them too much. They were just nice, every day nice. Jessie J… [Laughter] No comment.
But the worst, that’s all I’m gonna say. Here’s the thing, what I’ve learned about working with celebrities, I don’t find it like aspirational or inspirational to be well known, you know. But what I notice is a lot of the A-listers were the nicest people.
Then the further kind of down in the rink’s, ranks of like A, B, C, D listers you go, the more they kind of act like a celebrity and be like, don’t you know who I am. Luckily no one’s ever said that to me, because I’d be out of there.
Okay, so now I’m moisturized, I’m gonna put on a bit of eye cream, and we’re gonna just kind of de-puff a little bit because I am feeling a little bit puffy. The older I get, the more I’m kind of into eye creams/Caroline Hirons says to use an eye cream and her advice has never steered me wrong.
So, I’m gonna go ahead. So let’s talk about Naomi Campbell. So, she was of course… oh, and then I’m gonna kind of add a bit more of that occlusive layer with these Deux reusable eye patches, which I absolutely love.
Naomi Campbell. I wasn’t actually meant to have anything to do with it, to do with, sorry, because obviously she was gonna go down to Topshop which was the ladies wear and I was in Topman. However, I needed to take some returns down to Topshop.
I met her just as she was leaving. Stunning, absolutely stunning. Beautiful. So nice. So, so nice. I was getting ready to have something thrown at me, I was getting ready to called a name for no reason.
She looked at me as she was leaving and was like, hi thank you so much, enjoy the rest of your day. And I was like, I didn’t do anything. I was like, I’m just here not doing anything. I was like, thank you you’re welcome, even though I haven’t done anything at all.
At all. But I was just like, back then being really into the fashion world, which I don’t care about anymore, I’m kind of over it. Seeing Naomi Campbell, one of the original supermodels, if not the original supermodel was a really big, it was a really big moment.
From what I’ve seen she’s absolutely lovely in real personal life. Naomi Campbell goes in ‘Iconic’, because she is an absolute icon. Ariana Grande. Now, before I say this I want to preface this by saying, I feel like this was early in her career and I believe she’s changed a lot since then.
But at the time she was in Topman and Topshop cause she was dating someone from the group The Wanted. They’re a boy band here in the UK. Again, I don’t know if they ever made their way to the US. But she was dating one of them.
I’m guessing they made their way to the US because otherwise she wouldn’t know him, right? I don’t know. But the store was dead, absolutely dead and she… this was the days when she’d wear like the big 50s style skirts, and had a big bow in her hair and all this kind of stuff.
And she was literally walking around the shop floor going, everyone’s looking at me, I don’t want people looking at me, all this kind of stuff. And we were like, no one’s looking at you, like nobody knows who you are yet.
Literally no one knew who she was. This is in the UK, it was before she even started her singing career. She might have been an actor before. I don’t know. Literally, no one cares. No one’s looking at you.
And it was a little bit dramatic, it was typical celebrity behavior. I didn’t have much to do with her at the time, just her, her boyfriend at the time. He was super nice as well. But I do feel like she’s, you know, like when you kind of grow up being a celebrity.
.. it’s the same with Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber was very rude, he was demanding, shouting, not us but his staff who in turn were a bit short with us. He was just a bit of a dick. But you kind of look at these young celebrities and you can tell they’ve grown up now, you can tell their different people.
And you know, I always say if you’re that young and you’re surrounded by all these yes men, and these yes people, and money, and the wealth and… that’s the same thing, and the fame and the followers you’re gonna be a dick.
Listen, if I was 17 even 19 and I had that kind of following or younger, I would have been a completely different person. I do feel like it can change you when you’re that young. Ariana Grande can go in ‘Meh’, she wasn’t that bad.
It was just typical like diva-ish behavior at the time. Okay, I’m gonna take these off. I would usually leave them on for a bit longer but we’re coming to the end now. Oh. Right, let’s go into the big ones.
Let’s talk Taylor Swift. So, Taylor Swift was touring and she bought herself and all of her dancers, backing dancers, singers all that into the Topman and Topshop lounges. She was not shopping for herself, she was just back and forth to Topman, Topshop checking that everyone was okay.
Her dances were so nice. I think I had a picture with them, if I could find it I’ll put it here. We, as a job we are not allowed to ask for pictures with the celebrities, we’re not allowed to take pictures.
They actually asked to have a picture taken with us. They were so nice. She paid for everything, she paid for everyone’s everything, and there was no budget. She was hanging out with the manager who was there at the time, one of the personal shopping manager’s just chatting.
I had to interrupt their conversation because the shoe department was locked, and I had to get a key and she was so nice, so, so nice. So nice, so f*cking nice. She actually bought Ed Sheeran with her.
He popped in because she was there, and I think they were really good friends at the time. I don’t know if they still are. And of course, he as well had an unlimited budget. He ended up buying a multi-pack of socks, and boxer shorts and he literally was like, no I don’t want anything else.
I think he was literally just there to hang out with Taylor Swift. But they were both so, so nice. Taylor Swift is in ‘Iconic’. I’m gonna apply the most important step of my skincare routine, the sunscreen.
And possibly the most interesting celebrity that I always get asked about… So this is the Hello Sunday SPF 45. The One That’s A Serum. Serum sunscreens are just really nice lightweight sunscreens. So we had a long kind of history with Beyonce, in the sense that her stylist would come in whenever they were in town or doing a show and grab some bits for her, of course all for free.
He was really cool. He gave us tickets to go and see her perform at this ITV like Christmas show, I think it was. Which was really cool as well. So then, one night we get called back into work after leaving, because Beyonce, Jay-Z and her mother were showing up, and they wanted to shop.
So, I don’t get starstruck… oh, look at that glow. Yeah, we like that. So basically what, one thing we had to do when we were meeting celebrities was line up, whoever was, there’d usually be like five stylists, no, three, four, five stylists depending on who it was, how many people were with them and a couple of assistants as well.
So we’d have to stand in line so security could see who we were, so if anybody randomly pops in or tries to get involved security knows that they’re not part of the shopping, private experience. So we’re all lined up, she was running about an hour late which was fine with, that’s something we were definitely used to with A-list celebrities because, you know, nothing always goes to plan with them.
They got things to do, you know. But they walk in… I’ve, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been so speechless by the beauty of someone, and we did a lot of models, we did a lot of fashion week, we saw some amazing, amazing models and faces.
But there’s just something about Beyonce that was just like, we were all kind of like speechless, because usually when celebrities in we introduce ourselves we’re like, hi welcome, welcome, welcome. We all just like.
.. And beyonce was like, hey, and Jay-Z was like hi, and they were kind of like standing there, it was a little bit awkward and Beyonce was like, sorry we were late we were just finishing dinner. Again, no one’s saying anything so I kind of piped up, and I was like, where did you go? And they were like Nando’s, and we’re like, oh we love Nando’s! And that kind of got everyone talking.
And then from there Beyonce actually walked around with jay-z in Topman, first of all. Both so, so, so, so nice, just chatting with my manager who could talk to anyone like they were best mates kind of thing.
I remember he called me over because I was kind of watching from a distance, and then my manager called me over and was like, James could you get them, this shoe in this size, I was like, oh yeah absolutely.
Beyonce passed it over, and she was like, thank you, I was like, you’re welcome. So I go back to get her this, I think they were either Caterpillar boots or like Dr Martens or something, and I go in the back room and they don’t have them in the size that she wants, they don’t have any in stock whatsoever.
And I’m in this backroom, I’m panic… I’m panicking. I’m like, I need to go out there and I need to tell Beyonce that we don’t have what she wants, and I was sh*tting myself. I was like, I don’t want to do it, I don’t want to do it, I don’t want to do it.
I was like, can we phone another store? Then I realized they were all closed. I was like, I have to go out there and tell Beyonce no. It was like something I really didn’t want to do. In all of my career, working with some of the rudest most difficult people in fashion, like the one thing I didn’t want to do was tell Beyonce we didn’t have the shoe size.
So I go out there, like back sweating. I’m like, I’m so sorry we don’t have the shoe in, in your size. We can, you know, if you’re still around tomorrow we can get it bought in from another store, we can get it sent to your hotel like we’ll come down there, which is what we used to do.
She’s like, oh no it’s okay, don’t worry. I was like, oh my god, oh my god, thank god. That was it, that was it, that was literally it. Jay-Z was super nice as well, he was just chatting to my manager the whole time.
And it’s weird, because the next day the Daily Mail actually wrote an article about Beyonce shopping in Topshop saying Topshop, Topman personal shopping put on a a grand… what as it? A grand fashion show for Beyonce’s private shopping experience, showing her all the latest releases and fashion week clothes not yet on the shelves.
I was like, no we didn’t. We never did that. She literally shopped what was on the, on the shelf. Yes she got everything for free but… I’m gonna apply some lip balm, this is the Ultraviolet SPF 50 Sheen Screen Hydrating Lip Balm.
I look super shiny right now but everything is gonna settle in, and be less shiny. But yeah, that was my experience that’s like all, pretty much all the main celebrities I can remember. There were many more like um C, D listers from the UK.
But let me know if you want to know some more. I hope that’s just something a little bit different, I just wanted to do something whilst I was getting ready, basically. You can check out some more videos here, and some other ones here as well.
But that is it from me now, I will see you next time.
