Oily Skin Skincare Routine! Oily Skin Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer, Serum, Sunscreen- Oil Control
hey guys welcome back to my channel for today’s video we are going to be starting a series here that i am so excited to start because i’ve had so many questions from you guys that i feel like just all play perfectly into this questions like what’s the best moisturizer for oily skin what’s the best sunscreen for dry skin over and over and over which i totally understand i would want to know the same thing as a viewer so i thought that we would just make this a series so that i can answer your guys’s questions in total for everybody instead of just replying to every single person so we’re gonna start here today with an oily skincare routine for the am i will be talking through steps that i would absolutely include steps that are nice to have but you don’t need to have and some products that i would recommend as best of the best for oily skin of course these are not the only products that are good for oily skin there are so many others that i can’t include in this video of course but these ones that i have here to recommend are really really good picks so if you guys want to hear what i would recommend for an oily skin am skincare routine and some really good oily skin products you are in the right spot let’s jump right into it okay so quickly i wanted to just talk through some oily skin concerns and things that these products may help to address so kind of how i went about picking these products so if you have oily skin then you likely deal with an oily or greasy looking t-zone enlarged pores blackheads you may be more prone to breakouts and you may just be trying to control oil production all around throughout the day of course there are other concerns that oily skin types may have and acne for example is not only a concern if you have oily skin you can absolutely have acne if you have dry skin as well but those are some really common skin care concerns for people that are oily i do actually already have a video up talking through how to create a minimal skincare routine based on your skin type so that one is more so focused on keeping the routine as minimal as possible it’s actually an am and pm routine using only five products total for both the morning and night so if that’s more so what you’re interested in a really minimal routine depending on your skin type i will link that video below this one i mean still in general i would say i’m not super over the top or extensive when it comes to a skincare routine i’m never going to be recommending 100 different products i’m not into all of the fluff but this one i will include a couple other things that i think are nice to have in a skincare routine and are not just completely bare bones so the first thing that i’m going to mention is toner and this actually could either fall first or second in your skincare routine if you have oily skin depending on what’s going on with the actual toner as far as ingredients goes and what you are trying to achieve so toner is a step that is not necessary in a skincare routine you don’t need to use a toner at all i personally don’t use one on a consistent basis but if you have very oily skin you may really benefit from using one and you may enjoy using a toner to help to control your oils and a lot of toners are filled with ingredients that are not so great and a lot of things that have the potential to irritate and actually dry out the skin so i really try to be nitpicky about the toners that i recommend and review for you guys so i have a couple here and the one that i will bring up first is from verst first is from first it’s called their weekend glow daily brightening solution and the reason i want to talk about this one first is because this is an example of one that i would use prior to cleansing and that’s because witch hazel is the second ingredient in it witch hazel definitely can help to control oil production it also may help to soothe the skin and calm redness but it can be something that can be very irritating as well it’s totally going to depend on how your skin responds so in that scenario what i would recommend is applying this to the face before you cleanse so that your skin does not have all-day exposure to the witch hazel so you can use some sort of makeup cotton pad like i have here i will link these in my description box below i just got them off of amazon came with 400 in the pack soak that toner on there and then you can apply that to your entire face leave that on for a couple minutes and then go ahead and cleanse and this could be something that can help to control those oils it also has niacinamide in it which is a great ingredient for oil control as well as others that are really nice at helping to soothe and hydrate so propandial is an example of one of those this also has glycolic acid lactic acid azoleic acid so some really nice exfoliants in there things that can help to increase cell turnover and brighten the skin help to improve texture things that i really like to see i wish this was formulated without the witch hazel because this would be so great and then i would just say go ahead leave it on the skin throughout the day but you could also leave this on for longer than a couple minutes as well maybe 10 minutes gonna depend on what your skin can tolerate and whatever is not irritating for you but i think that that is a good option at helping to control oils if that is a main concern of yours and then the other toner that i would recommend is from the inky list this is their pha toner and this one does not have any witch hazel or alcohol or any forms of irritants at all in it which is amazing i talk about both of these actually you know what i’m pretty sure i have a review on almost every single product that i’m going to be talking about here today so i’ll just link them all below if you want more details on those products and kind of in depth want to know about the ingredient label but this is one that i do have a review on and i was so excited to find because this is the gentlest option for a toner that i personally have found that doesn’t mean that there’s not others that exist that are just as gentle but in the research i’ve done this is the one so if you have oily skin but really sensitive skin and you’re easily irritated by things like witch hazel or maybe drying forms of alcohol fragrances which are in a lot of toners i would definitely recommend checking out this inky list toner and then this is where i would actually use this after cleansing and just leave it on the skin throughout the day to help with that oil control because that doesn’t have anything in there that i think needs to be rinsed off with the cleanser all right now let’s move on to cleanser so cleansing will either be the first or second step in your am skincare routine depending on what kind of toner you’re using if you’re even using one and cleansing is also not 100 required in the morning dermatologists will recommend different things depending on your skin type i think if you have oily skin that’s where you could definitely benefit from an am cleanse to kind of prep and prepare the skin and help to control some of those oils so while there are certain ingredients in cleansers and just in other products that are really nice to look out for to help with oil control one of those being niacinamide within a cleanser it’s not going to be a make or break if it has a bunch of really nice ingredients like that because you’re only leaving it on the skin for up to a couple minutes depending on what’s in there so i would say at the end of the day what’s most important is using a cleanser that has a consistency that you enjoy and typically for oily skin types thinner more gel like consistencies are things that people with oily skin tend to reach for and enjoy more of course i can’t say that that’s true for everybody with oily skin because everyone has different preferences at the end of the day i’m not telling you what you need to use or what you need to like i’m just giving you some recommendations based on what i know about oily skin so the first cleanser that i would recommend of course is the cerave foaming facial cleanser so this is their cleanser that’s designed for oil control and the reason that it’s called an oil control cleanser is because it has that niacinamide in there and because the formulation is a really nice lightweight gel that lathers up very well of course aside from the niacinamide this cleanser also has three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid which all cerave products have so that kind of helps to maybe offset the potential drying effects that this cleanser might have because those are really nice hydrating replenishing ingredients so i think this one is so so good i absolutely love the formulation i would highly recommend if you have oily skin let’s talk about the other syrupy cleanser that i have next so this is their renewing sa cleanser this one just says it’s for normal skin but i think this could be a great one if you do have oily skin because it has salicylic acid in it salicylic acid is going to be something that helps to exfoliate the skin increase cell turnover like we just talked about for some of those other acids it is a beta hydroxy acid or bha and this one does not disclose the amount of salicylic acid present so i don’t think it’s going to be that much and it’s also interesting because gluconalactone is way higher up on the list than salicylic acid gluconolactone is an example of a pha so what we talked about here an exfoliant that’s going to be gentler on the skin than an aha or a bha so that one’s actually much higher up on the label and this one also has niacinamide as well so if you’re looking for some additional exfoliation check this one out i personally am not irritated by this but it may be something that feels a little bit too drying for you if you do have really sensitive skin so just always make sure that you’re checking in with your skin and looking at how it responds to certain products once you start to introduce new products into your routine seeing how it feels if your skin is feeling really tight then that’s probably not the best product for you that’s kind of a general rule of thumb okay next is a cleanser that’s kind of similar to the cerave foaming facial cleanser so for those of you that are not able to use that because it causes your skin to burn or feel irritated which i know definitely happens to some people this might be a good option for you it’s the eucerin redness relief cleansing gel and it’s not exactly the same it definitely doesn’t lather up quite as much as that cerave option but it’s a nice lightweight gel as well lightweight gel as well and this one does not have niacinamide in it which i think may be one of the reasons that that cerave cleanser causes some people to feel like their skin’s burning a little bit so no niacinamide in this one it does have licorice root which can help to brighten but i mean in a cleanser like this you’re not going to see much of a brightening effect at all if any i would say more so that’s nice in this situation because it does help to relieve redness if you also deal with redness but other than that i think it’s just a really nice basic cleanser for oily skin types there’s really not much going on here but it should be a gentle option and especially a good one to check out if you can’t use cerave and then the last cleanser that i have is this simple kind to skin foaming cleanser and in the research that i’ve done when dermatologists recommend certain product consistencies for certain skin types i’ve pretty much always seen either avoid foaming cleansers or just use foaming cleansers if you have oily skin often because a lot of foaming cleansers can be filled with ingredients that are a little bit more drying but i like this one because it doesn’t have anything in it that should be overly drying to the skin it does have a couple really nice hydrators like glycerin and the lantern so if you’re concerned with overly drying out your skin with a foaming cleanser but you like that kind of true foam bubbly consistency i would definitely recommend checking this one out i personally think this feels nice and hydrating on the skin but does a really good job at cleansing i could see how this would probably not be something that dry skin types would love if you have flakes or scaly patches but if you’re normal i think you would really enjoy this if you’re normal if your skin is normal i think you may really enjoy this one as well because like i said there’s nothing in here that should be overly drying it’s just not a really thick rich consistency which is going to be nice for a lot of people okay the next category that i want to talk about is actually not something i would recommend doing every single day that can absolutely be way too irritating on the skin i can’t really give a blanket recommendation at all because everybody’s skin is different so for some you may be able to do this a few times a week for others maybe only once a week or once every other week it really just depends on how your skin can handle these ingredients but that is using some sort of peel i think this can be especially helpful if you have oily skin because of those exfoliation benefits and because it helps to prevent pores from clogging so if you feel that your pores are enlarged and you can see visible cloggage if you will introducing some sort of peel into your skincare routine on a weekly or bi-weekly basis may be really beneficial to you so this one is the ordinary aha bha peeling solution and this is one that you only leave on your skin for up to 10 minutes so for me i don’t even leave this on my skin for a full 10 minutes because it can be way too irritating for me i have sensitive skin but i do leave this on for a few minutes and then i rinse it off and then i move on with my skincare routine so i think this is a great one you have both alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid and glycolic acid beta hydroxy acid or salicylic acid in here and it’s at a very high concentration so 30 aha so if you have really sensitive skin be careful with this one this is definitely not a starter peel if you have sensitive skin for that i would recommend using something that’s gentler like a 10 lactic acid or even just starting off with a toner like one of these two that have acids in them that you either rinse off or leave on like this one which is a bit gentler so if you do have really resistant skin that’s not easily irritated or maybe you have been using peels slash acids at lower concentrations for a while and you’re ready to increase the strength this is a really great one and the reason that i include this in the oily skincare video is because of that higher concentration of acids that can be very effective at helping to exfoliate prevent that poor cloggage prevent the formation of breakouts okay next let’s move on to serums so another category that’s not absolutely necessary you can skip if you would like to but one that i think can be really beneficial so there’s a couple different routes that you could go with this if you want to use some sort of serum that’s specifically targeted at your oily skin care concerns like controlling oils helping to reduce the appearance of pores helping to unclog pores you can absolutely do that and i think a really good one for that is the first just breathe clarifying serum this has quite a few different ingredients in it that are so great if you’re oily and or acne prone one of those is niacinamide love to see that so as far as oily skin goes niacinamide can help to control oil production it can also help to calm the skin so breakouts of course are often really aggravated irritated and inflamed so it can help to calm redness it also helps to improve texture so if you do have bumps from active breakouts or previous breakouts that are healing niacinamide can be a great ingredient to help to speed that up or improve that healing process this also has salicylic acid in it it has willow bark extract so willow bark extract is actually what salicylic acid is derived from and that can help to calm and soothe as well this also has licorice root in it to help to brighten so if you do have acne scars that’s a great ingredient to include in a serum like this and then zinc is the final ingredient that i think is really noteworthy here not only can that help to control oil production but that has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to prevent the spread and formation of acne bacteria on the skin so another awesome ingredient in an oily skin acne prone skin serum this is such a good one and then of course if you guys watch a lot of my videos you know that vitamin c serum is an everyday staple for me in my skincare routine so another serum that you don’t need but i think can really go a long way in a skincare routine and helping to improve your overall complexion so while people with oily skin are not going to be running after those glowy dewy skin products as often as probably somebody with dry skin would i still think that vitamin c serums and antioxidant serums can have such nice effects on the skin aside from just making your skin glow they can help with anti-aging they can help to improve texture and dark spots really a versatile product and that’s another reason why i love using them so my favorite vitamin c serum of all time is from dermatology it’s their advanced ce ferulic serum so not only does this have vitamin c in it but it also has vitamin e and ferulic acid both of those ingredients are really nice antioxidants for the skin and when you add that to a vitamin c serum with alzorbic acid it can help to stabilize that l-ascorbic acid and provide your skin with further photo protection so using something like this before a sunscreen can help to protect your skin from uv damage even more but this is not a sunscreen replacement don’t get crazy so the reason that i personally love this one and recommend it for oily skin types is because this is one of the lightest weight vitamin c serums i’ve ever used i’ve definitely used vitamin c serums before that are just i don’t want to say heavy because i don’t feel like that’s the right word but at a thicker consistency and one that looks a lot dewer on the skin this one dries down completely on me and while it definitely makes my skin look healthy i don’t feel like it adds shine to my skin at all or any sort of dew does that make sense i don’t know if that makes any sense i hope it does but this doesn’t really have a ton going on as far as hydrating ingredients it has sodium hyaluronate and that’s basically it it also has a peptide in it but i think that’s a good thing if you have oily skin because it’s not like this is going to be filled with a bunch of surface hydrators that will make your skin look even oilier for me it doesn’t do that if a serum like this is just not even an option for you because maybe even something like that ends up being too glowy you could absolutely use a vitamin c powder instead or a vitamin c suspension so the ordinary has two vitamin c suspensions that i did compare and review and i’ll link that below if you guys are interested those are other options too but i just love this one so much i also do have a 20 off code with dermatology it’s just abby 20.
if you want 20 off okay next let’s move on to eye under eye around the eye hydration so you can absolutely just use your moisturizer work it up around the eye area for under eye around the eye hydration you don’t need a separate eye cream you don’t you don’t you don’t need to spend the money on it yes it’s definitely a category in skincare that’s a little bit gimmicky a little bit of a marketing push but at the same time i do appreciate a nice feeling eye cream or eye gel don’t get me wrong if something feels really nice around the eye and makes my eye area look a little bit smoother maybe decrease puffiness a little bit i’m into it if it doesn’t cost a fortune so two that i think are great if you have oily skin are both from verse i feel like we have a lot of burst here actually they have some good oily skin products and it’s their vacation eyes brightening eye gel and their fix emergency eye mask the reason that i think these are really good options if you have oily skin is because of the consistency of both of them they are very lightweight and very gel like this one is lighter weight than this one so if you want something that is almost traceless but just helps to kind of smooth that under eye area a little bit this is definitely the one for you if you want one that’s a little bit more creamy but still has that gel consistency then check this one out i know that technically you’re supposed to remove this after 10 minutes but i just leave it on like any other eye cream and i really enjoy wearing this throughout the day there’s nothing in this that would need to be removed that can’t be left on the skin so i really like both of these neither of these products have occlusive ingredients in them to provide your eye area with long-term moisture so that’s why i think these are better suited for the daytime we really want to make sure we’re properly hydrating around the eyes but i totally understand there are some people that get really oily eyelids or just get really oily around here and if you’re trying to wear makeup that can be a big issue because it can cause that to kind of separate and break up easily so in that case you may just prefer using something like this and not something that’s a bit thicker totally understand that these are so nice they feel so good okay second to last category is moisturizer and this is actually something that’s not required if you have incredibly oily skin if you feel that any moisturizer like this no matter how lightweight it is is just too much for your skin you could skip it and just use some sort of sunscreen that has moisturizing ingredients in it that sunscreen can work just fine as a moisturizer if you can’t do the moisturizer thing if you’re too oily for that i feel like i’m gonna have people freak out that i just said that but i have read that in books and in articles from multiple dermatologists so i’m never claiming to be a dermatologist please don’t think that i always recommend seeing a dermatologist especially for skin concerns like acne or any sort of skin condition but in the books that i’ve read from dermatologists they’ve all said a moisturizer is not a requirement for oily skin so but if you do want to add a little bit of moisture and hydration to your skin i have a few that i think are really really nice lightweight options so here’s where i think best case scenario is using something that does not have a lot or high amounts of occlusive ingredients in them because that makes the formulation more lightweight so that it’s more like a gel or a lotion instead of a really thick cream those thick creams can just feel far too heavy on the skin if you’re oily and end up making your skin look even greasier which is what we’re trying to avoid and same thing here there are definitely ingredients that you can look out for that can help to control oil production niacinamide is one of those for sure and that’s what we have in this cerave pm facial moisturizing lotion so this has same ingredient callouts as their foaming facial cleanser niacinamide three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid and this is an oil-free moisturizer so this one’s funny because it specifically says it’s for the pm but i recommend this for am use because it’s so lightweight i think this is so good if you have oily skin i love this one this is so so good i highly recommend that i would say that that is my top recommendation for a daytime moisturizer for oily skin i do have two others though one is the vanna cream daily facial moisturizer this one does not have niacinamide in it but it is very lightweight so if you have tried their light lotion that one’s thicker than this so i think this is the best option from bana cream for oily skin types if you’re super sensitive i would say go for this one vana cream is definitely just in general as a brand my top recommendation for sensitive irritated skin another good one and then last is from the ordinary it’s their natural moisturizing factors with hyaluronic acid so this on the front calls out that it’s a surface hydration formula so something to hydrate the surface levels of the skin but not provide you with that deep long-term moisture so it’s not going to have those thick occlusive ingredients that make this just not the most pleasant especially during the daytime for oily skin this one doesn’t have niacinamide either i would say it’s probably most comparable to this vanity moisturizer but it’s totally just going to be up to you and what you prefer i would say my ranking goes like this cerave pm vana cream than the ordinary because this one i think is probably the thickest out of the three has the most creamy consistency to it even though it’s not a thick cream and then finally we have sunscreen a non-negotiable and absolute requirement in any skincare routine and including oily skin types it doesn’t matter what your skin type is we can find a sunscreen for you so i have three different recommendations here two of them are asian sunscreens one is not let’s start with the one that’s not it is the dermatology broad spectrum spf45 this is such a good sunscreen if you have oily skin oh my goodness oh my goodness so this also does have niacinamide in it which is great their tinted moisturizer does as well but that one leaves a very very glowy dewy finish on the skin and is not something that i would recommend for those of you that are incredibly oily and looking to minimize that this one’s not tinted but i think this is such a good option if you’re oily because it dries down not matte it’s not super drying but it dries down really well and is not something that’s going to enhance the oils on your face or make you look oilier than you already are this is a combination sunscreen so it has 12 zinc oxide and 7.
5 percent octaneosate in it so if you cannot use sunscreens that have chemical filters then the other two sunscreens that i’m going to talk about are going to be for you but if you can i love this one and again i have 20 off with them so i often will use this in combination with a tinted sunscreen because a lot of the times i find if i continue to reapply tinted sunscreen certain ones can make me look orange and just the color ends up being kind of crazy so i like to use this to kind of tone down that color sometimes love it and then like i said the other two are asian sunscreen so honestly i just would recommend asian sunscreens in general if you have oily skin because they are the lightest weight sunscreens i have ever tried even more lightweight than that dermatology one they’re so good and the reason for that in a lot of them is that they actually do have alcohol in them or denatured alcohol towards the top of the label which is something that it’s probably a no-no if you have dry skin because it can absolutely be a little bit trying and or a little bit irritating but if you’re oily that may be something that you really enjoy because it helps the sunscreen to be incredibly lightweight and dry down very quickly so that’s not the case in all asian sunscreens i have a lot of different asian sunscreen reviews that i will link below if you just want more options in that category and i mentioned in all of those videos whether or not that sunscreen has added alcohol to it so this skin aqua one does this is an spf 50 and this i thought i was gonna get through this without dropping anything this has chemical filters in it that are not approved for use in the us yet but they are approved for use in asia and boy are they superior they’re so much better than the active ingredients that we have here it just makes the formula amazing i love this stuff pretty much everything from skin aqua is perfection for oily skin so i would check out that review that i have on skin aqua but i think you will be in love with this if you’re oily so good it’s not something that’s really going to mattify your skin so if you’re looking for a sunscreen that makes your oils disappear really the only one that i’ve tried that does that is the australian gold sunscreen do i have that here i do okay so this will give an honorable mention too because this does absolutely have a mattifying effect on the skin and it’s tinted so if you want something that has a little bit of color to it australian gold will be for you but the reason why i didn’t want to include it in this video is because it does have eucalyptus leaf extract in it which is a form of fragrance that can be irritating for people so i’m trying to keep that to a minimum but that’s not to say this is a bad sunscreen i know that a lot of people are obsessed with this if you are not irritated by that ingredient go for it especially if you want one that is matte and tinted the other asian sunscreen that i have is from the brand verdio verdio i don’t know how to say that eo and this one actually does not have added alcohol but it is so lightweight and dries down just as fast as some of those sunscreens that i have that do have high amounts of added alcohol so if you want a really lightweight option but you’re irritated by alcohol look no further this one feels so good this is their uv moisture gel i love this stuff like this is going to be in the running for one of my top sunscreen favorites of all time which i need to do a rundown of i will at some point i will that’ll happen if you guys want it to but she’s a beauty and that’s everything we’ve made it to the why was that so why do i always do that i’m like okay that is everything for this video those are all of my current recommendations for some really good oily skin care products for the am so keep in mind this is part one we will do an oily skin pm routine a dry skin am and pm routine whatever you guys want to see do you want me to do
