MY EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE
[Music] hi and welcome back we didn’t change my top because I’m gonna go straight into nighttime skincare routines I started off last Thursday’s video which was by daytime five-step routine right the way up through to SPF and makeup on how to protect your skin every single day and hydrate and keep it healthy and happy at night it’s very different your skin behaves very differently at night for start you don’t need an SPF but you do need to start with a really good cleanser and the reason is simple your cleanser needs to be a rinse off cream cleanser I think better than a bomb unless you’ve got super dry skin better than a gel because an emollient is going to really rinse away your makeup perfectly but again don’t spend too much money on your cleanser one of my all-time favorites is a super drug vitamin E hot cloth cleanser it’s just really brilliant it really is actually does come with a muslin cloth but I’m not you know it’s very interesting actually my boyfriend uses they used to refresh his face I don’t use the muslin cloth I use a microfiber cloth or a flannel I prefer microfiber cloths because I believe they super charge any cleanser you use and that will get rid of every single scrap of makeup in a single step with a microfiber cloth here’s the current favorite microfiber cloth genuinely cannot remember where I got it from but really can’t what does it say on it makeup remover cloth that’s all it says you know there are a hundred percent polyester anyway super soft really lovely that was I haven’t used that yet obviously but when I do use that to be filthy I’ll stick it straight into the wash I have about six or seven of them stick them on a 40 degree wash I wash them with my underwear they come perfectly clean anyways back to cleansers you do not need to know about my underwear do so vitamin E super drug genius brilliant product another one that I’m always talking about nourishing hot cloth cleanser from boots you’re good skin genius product really really really similar when I try to describe them to people the texture you want is Liz Earle cleanse and polish but without the essential oils because you know but you really need them in their skincare unless you just really love the smell of them these just are unscented they’re brilliant I don’t even use a separate eye makeup remover they are that good they really are another one that I really like this is slightly lighter this is the Paula’s Choice optimum results hydrating cleanser they call it a cleansing lotion which means that you could apply it to your face and then tissue off but I apply it to my face with actually what I do it’s very interesting I pump out or squeeze out what I need and then I sort of run my hands quickly under the water so it almost starts to emulsify then I massage it in gently around my eyes take a microfiber cloth damp the cloth wipe it off and then basically empty out the cloth again go back in rinse it out and then go around again because you’ll find bits left over my tests with a good cleanser is I will then literally dry my face sorry that’s my phone I will literally say Matty what’s up good I will literally dry my face with my white company towels and then I always do what I called the towel test and the towel test is I have my white company towels I go in I gently Pat my face rub gently Pat my face Rob and if I then leave a makeup mark on that towel I need to go back in and cleanse so that’s the big tail test I do not double cleanse but that’s because I sit how you honestly believe this the Primark ones which ever make you get go on Amazon just look at microfiber face cloths they super charge any cleanse that they really do if I was to wake up the next morning and find even a smudge of makeup under my eyes I’d be really surprised I just love a rinse off cream cleanser I really do have tried balms I totally get why you love Barb’s it’s just afterwards you’ll need to use a second cleanse or if you’ve got really dry skin you might like that feeling of being a slippery salamander as Katie called it that slippery sort of oily feeling off because I don’t I want my skin to be cool calm clean and ready for retinol for me evening skincare is pretty much a single step I did one step night creams on there and somebody said can you do one step serums well one serums are never going to be one that really are they if you think about it logically serums are designed to layer up they’re generally not hydrating enough for a single step except when it comes to retinol my absolute gold standard introductory retinol is paulus just 1% retinol treatment I’ve never had a problem with it I go straight in on freshly cleanse skin it’s brilliant it’s hydrating it’s this is a brand new one actually which reminds me I need to put this on the bitterish side she’s just brought one out by the way which is not 0.
3 percent bleep acute your Linnet know I know but couch on is not a retinol um it’s a plant extract is an antioxidant it doesn’t even work on the same retinol pathways but I think noir point 3 percent is a really nice one just as the number seven one is for people who’ve never used to retinol before and what’s interesting about the number seven one is it’s got niacin amide in as well so let me show you the formulation there it is I had been more loyal to this retinol than to any other retinol I’ve never had a bad reaction to I’ve never had soreness I’ve never had irritation but bearing in mind I’ve been using retinol for quite a long time for me the gold standard retinol is 1% that’s what you really want to aim to get up to use every single time however don’t feel like you need to start at 1% I do have followers that have had trouble breaking into this in the sense that they’ve come back to me and said I’ve used it for 3 or 4 nights and now I’m read and saw and I go oh back up I am a tough old bird quite literally and my skin is used to retinol however I’m going to introduce you to some that a lighter and some that are stronger one I really like and I totally understand why people absolutely love is la roche-posay retinol b3 now this is very clever ok I don’t know what percentage this is I presume it’s sitting at no 0.
3% if they’re not listed as a percentage which is that one is 1% and then only naught point three percent I’ve talked about this a lot this is a lighter serum but it’s still super hydrating and it’s loaded with niacinamide why is niacinamide important niacinamide is important because it improves your barrier function it’s a B vitamin it’s a B that is involved in a whole host of skins processes including pigmentation formation and hydration and sebum production but because it’s involved in sebum production it also restores your barrier function so if you put niacinamide into your retinol you’ll get less irritation and that’s why that is a really clever product as is the number setting on other ones I really like I presume me this is sitting at roughly naught point three percent this is the retinol super booster from food beauty pie so many of you absolutely adore the ordinary and here is the ordinary retinol nought point two percent in squalene now the advantage of squalene is it’s highly hydrating it’s a lovely skin similar moisturizer derived from olive oil not 0.
2% again you see if you’re gold standard is 1% but you have to build up to it slowly and you don’t want to buffer that out I’m going to teach you how to buffer that out in a minute then starts at naught 0.
2% work your way through this bottle go up to naught point three percent then work your way up to 1% it’s it’s easy to do once you start retinol you use it for life once you start seeing the benefits you will use it for life for me it’s absolutely the only active ingredient I regularly use at night I use an acid every so often just to peel my skin if it’s looking dull but retinol is my gold standard at night by the time you get to my age specially if you’ve got a Sun damaged you should be so you can start at Northpoint 2% just the way up to naught point 3 percent and then you can work your way up I’m really going for it oh I love medicated for me there are three or four companies that do retinols incredibly well SkinCeuticals have various levels of retinol so you can build up Paula’s Choice is excellent and really reasonably priced medicate is excellent and they even do the next step up from retinol which is retinol retinol Bhide that’s the next metabolic pathway up before it becomes retinoic acid in the skin which is the the biologically active form of vitamin A in your skin and and then also NeoStrata and if I have one here I would have NeoStrata in YAG which is the amazing form of retinal medicate and NeoStrata just great interesting well formulated products they really are they’re sort of clinically active levels of products normally you can access them via you know domes and dermatologists and stuff like that for me retinol it’s your gold standard here’s how to buffer it if you suddenly find yourself buying something at 1% and you can’t use it step back slow and steady wins the race with retinol there’s no point in making your skin suffer and then sewing off – it’s all I didn’t get on with it because it’s about compliance do you remember when I did that video about number 7 the reason number 7 put it in at Northpoint 3% and loaded it with niacinamide is because they knew that it was about compliance you know there’s no point in trying to use 1% retinol and then making your face fall off and then you won’t stick with it so rather they would rather have it at naught point 3 percent and have everybody use it in the long term well once you start using retinol on naught point 3 percent you should technically be able to they use at noir point 5 percent and wear your way up to 1% however if you’ve bought a 1% or you bought a retinol and you don’t know how to buffer your skin is still reacting here’s how get yourself a nice in imide serum doesn’t have to be this one who does them kinky doing them super drug do an amazing one an amazing zinc and not a cinema really reasonably priced when you’ve washed your face in the evening which you’ve used a rinse off cream cleanser so your skin isn’t over stripped first thing to do is put on a niacinamide serum because that will help buffer it out and then what you do is you take your moisturizer it could be a peptide moisturizer it doesn’t have to be something as expensive for this it could be a sarahfey moisturizer and what you do is you take your retinol at 1% you pump it into your hand however many pumps you need one or two pumps probably from a product like that and then you put exactly the same amount of bland sarahfey into your hand and you mix it together and then you put it all over don’t worry about overthinking what you can and can’t add with retinol because all that will do all that sarahfey will do is give your skin a layer of emollients and humectants and ceramides that will slowly allow the retinol to buffer into your skin at the same time you will have turned that from a 1% return to what Northpoint 5% retinol because you’ve diluted it there’s other ways of doing it as well one easy way to do it is to cleanse your skin don’t bother with the niacin and why but do look for a moisturizer with niacin amide in it which they’re not that difficult to find only do loads of them for a perfect case in point and what you do is you cleanse your skin you get your your bulk stand and is a boring but they’re beautifully formulated moisturizer so you’re sort of CeraVe or you’re sort of Curel or something like that you apply it to your face in a gentle layer then you leave your skin go downstairs watch the TV cleanse your teeth read a book you know keep your retinol by the side of the bed then apply your retinol after about 10 minutes and again that’s what I mean by buffering because what you’ve done is loaded with your skin with emollients you’ve loaded your skin with humectants and that forms a barrier between you and the outside world so that the retinol rather than rushing into your skin slowly delivers overnight so there are two different ways of doing it the easiest way is to mix it 50/50 which will also dilute it the other way is to layer it and at the same time that’s when at night I would use a retinol eye cream I love ceramide enriched I by Paula’s choice it’s got that him and see him retinol and niacinamide and a whole host of actives in it but I would use that right up and around my eyes but I’m a tough old bird some people can some people can’t use it I’ve never had a problem with that that I couldn’t use around my eyes and I couldn’t use the astrologer around my eyes if in doubt you take your retinol to here and then there is something called a wicking effect and then what happens is it basically wicks into the finest skin around your eyes I don’t risk sore eyes because for most people using retinol around your eyes is pretty tough so look for a retinol eye cream which will be formulated to either have a retinal precursor in it or in lower dose of retinol and then be balanced out with emollients it’s that simple it’s not difficult to overthink nighttime it really isn’t it’s simply for me two steps on the nights I’m not using retinol I maybe use an overnight acid maybe a 10% glycolic or lactic acid something like Sundy Riley once a week just to give my skin a really good deep clean and get rid of any old dry skin cells or anything like that other things I might use overnight self-tan I like to use myself tan overnight people always ask me things about self tan and retinol if you use a retinol you are going to slowly speed up your skin cell turnover as if you use an acid as well so yes your your you know your fake tan is not going to last long but by the same token your skin will look and feel smoother it’ll have a new clarity to it more even some more evenness more radiance more evenness or even toned from radiance it’ll just your skin will just be the healthier happier version of itself so therefore self tan will sit and look better on it if you want to use an acid with a self tan in it then dr.
Dennis gross has an acid pad that you can apply that has a low level of self tan in it and that’s perfect because what you’ve got if you’ve got a two-step in one so rather than having to give up retinol twice a week to put yourself tan on or your retinol twice a week to put your acid on you’ve only got a you can use your retinol six times a week and then use your dr.
Dennis gross pads I’m aware of the fact that they’re expensive and yes you can put your self tan on in the morning or on days the weekends when you during the day when you’re not wearing so much makeup I’m just trying to simplify things for you I’m trying to simplify things because I don’t want you to overthink these things because I get so many people really confused mainly because they’ve gone to a store like the ordinary and they’ve been oversold about 18 different steps and they just don’t know where to start it’s about steps at night it should be a gentle rinse off cream cleanser and a retinol for most people if you’ve got problematic skin it would be a gentle rinse off cream cleanser or gel cleanser and a salicylic acid if you’ve got pigmentation it would be a gentle rinse off cream cleanser and tranexamic acid or super-strength vitamin C I’m just giving you my basic hasn’t got any problems just is getting older skincare routine and it’s a good one for most people over the age of probably about 35 if they haven’t got new problems if I do have a breakout then what I do is I put my rent on on everybody else where else but say I’ve got a big spot here or a big spot here big spot here I’ll just put salicylic acid in the area and not the retinol there’s nothing wrong with using retinol on breakouts it can help them in the long term I like to really go for what what here that’s just gone and I started off by putting what did I put on that to begin with when it first came up and I’ve still no idea where I got it when it first came up I put on Paula’s Choice 2% BHA gel and it is still slightly peeling around there now I’ve really got it on there morning dew night and and then in between when I rinsed it off I used the antiseptic spray and if I show you that my 2% Paula’s Choice BHA is the old packaging that tells you how long it lasts if you don’t have a lot of breakouts I mean lasted me years still completely active is absolutely brilliant airtight and in between I use the cleaner cept which is the the antiseptic spray it’s so good you can space it do you like water doesn’t smell if anything you can put it on your earrings cuz I’m a bit allergic to my earrings so they get a little bits or sometimes just spots cold sores cuts abrasions insect bites and love it it’s like an emergency it’s like a much more modern equivalent of did you mom used to put Dettol on you and you’re a higher dean anyway it’s that I just thought I’d go and get those because occasionally I do get breakouts so I do understand but they that is my nighttime routine and this is part two a video that starts on Thursday so if you want to go back you can look on Thursday the last video apart was my daytime routine this is my nighttime routine don’t ever think it please don’t but if you do overthink it always ask me a question and I promise I’ll answer thanks for watching thanks for subscribing and I’ll see yourself you [Music]
