July 2020 Favorites & Fails (skin care, hair, beauty, & lifestyle)| Dr Dray
hey guys happy friday tomorrow is august 1st 2020 and i thought it would be fun to share with you guys some skincare and lifestyle things that i’ve been trying out over the past month throughout july things that i’ve actually liked and things that were not so great i thought this would be a good idea because you know i try out several different things some that are sent to me others that i buy and i don’t always necessarily do a dedicated review so i thought this would be a fun way to just kind of share with you some different products and kind of a more rapid fire fashion comment below and if you like this idea i might try doing it on an actual monthly basis or at least you know maybe from time to time anyways the first skin care products were sent to me they are from a brand called oh kelly nature serum miracle now this brand is a korean brand that’s cruelty free they primarily have dietary supplements aimed at beauty first is this brighten up hyaluronic bomb now this is a hyaluronic acid serum it has seven different types of hyaluronic acid as well as a variety of plant extracts now hyaluronic acid serums like this the way to use them is to apply them to your skin after you have cleansed your skin while the skin is still damp because hyaluronic acid is a humectant so it will bind onto the water and kind of help drive it into the top layer of your skin and keep your skin hydrated that can help smooth out wrinkles and fine lines i’ve reviewed hyaluronic acid before and i have a lot of videos on it beyond the hyaluronic acid in this it also has licorice root which can brighten up areas of hyperpigmentation is also anti-inflammatory has a skin soothing effect it’s got dandelion leaf extract rhodiola and rose flour extract all of these plant extracts they’re touted as having antioxidants and being anti-inflammatory but they’re really not super evidence-based in terms of their benefit to skin when included in skin care products so take that with a grain of salt and plant extracts can always be irritating and this product also has something called phytic acid in it now fitting acid is actually mildly exfoliating but primarily acts as a moisturizing ingredient and it can actually increase the penetration of other ingredients in the product all in all this product did not wow me at all it was okay i didn’t have any issue with it i’ve been using it now for over four weeks with no problem just as i said to damp skin i don’t appreciate that wow factor of increased hydration in the skin with improvement wrinkles and fine lines that i get from other hyaluronic acid products which i’ve reviewed in the past favorably now while hyaluronic acid is generally inert and not problematic as far as people developing allergies to it because it helps in hydrating up the top layer of the skin it can make other ingredients potentially more irritating just by increasing penetration because remember anytime there is moisture in the skin you do get enhanced skin penetration of active ingredients especially since this has multiple forms of hyaluronic acid products that have low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can that hyaluronic acid can penetrate a little bit more deeply and i do think that there are there is a subset of people out there who develop irritation to those forms the smaller forms of hyaluronic acid and in a product like this we have multiple botanic extracts i do think this offers a greater potential for irritation for people that being said i had no problem i’ve had no issues with it and it’s fine um but it’s not something i would necessarily buy myself again it was sent to me and it’s not something i would strongly recommend to you guys the second product from this brand is their sleep mask you guys know how i feel about sleep masks it’s just another name for my for a pm moisturizer i actually really enjoy this it has hyaluronic acid just one form i believe and it has bitter cherry fruit water and date fruit extract bitter cherry fruit water is going to potentially have a lot of antioxidants that can be anti-inflammatory and date fruit extract probably is rich in sugars that can act as a humectant now phytic acid again as i said is mostly a moisturizing ingredient but can help kind of smooth out the skin and increase penetration of active ingredients and this also has green tea in it camellia sinensis and then chamomile which is anti-inflammatory it’s a very lightweight water-based moisturizer that absorbs very quickly and you can put this on again too damp skin so that hyaluronic acid acid can really bind onto the water and then you can leave it as is or you can layer another moisturizer on top i think if you have really oily greasy skin you might find that just using the sleep mask by itself is sufficient but if you have drier skin you may find that you benefit from using another moisturizer on top overall i think that this will go over well for people who have oily skin i rather enjoyed using it and uh i don’t have any issue with it and then lastly from this brand is their balance warrior this is a light another lightweight moisturizer that i think would be well suited for people with oily skin now this one is touting all of the prebiotic and probiotic claims that are so popular these days the idea is on putting prebiotics which are kind of like food for the bacteria that normally live on your skin putting them on your skin can kind of help cultivate your skin microbiome and have anti-inflammatory outcomes likewise putting probiotics on the skin is also thought to help cultivate a skin microbiome that is more imbalanced the data for this is not quite there and it’s mostly been shown to be helpful in conditions like eczema acne seborrheic dermatitis rosacea but if you have otherwise normal skin to what extent putting pro or prebiotics on your skin is going to be helpful it’s hard to predict also in each of these studies that i’ve alluded to they’re using different strains they’re using different ingredients they’re using different duration study durations different skin conditions there’s just no no generalizable conclusion that we can draw from these studies yeah more is needed but that doesn’t stop skin care companies from putting a lot of pre and probiotics into their products and claiming all sorts of things so this bad boy has lactobacillus ferment filtrate pseudoalteromonas ferment filtrate radish ferment filtrate these things if anything are rich in humectants and potentially anti-inflammatory compounds it also has inulin in it which is something that if you eat it’s basically fiber and fiber in your digestive tract helps support your gut microbiome you know putting fiber on your face i don’t know you guys it seems like a stretch and then this also has gluconalactone and beta glucan now those are wonderful humectants as well these aren’t bound ingredients so at the end of the day i don’t have anything negative to say about this um i would just caution you to not wed yourself to the idea that this prebiotic probiotic milieu is going to heal your acne or cure your acne it’s a decent lightweight moisturizer i really enjoyed it and honestly i would continue you know i plan to continue using all these until i finish them but this of the three is one i would probably consider purchasing myself and would recommend this most strongly as opposed to the others they have some warm botanic extracts that can be irritating these three products each are 29 and i think the website has like one of those kind of subscription dealios where you can get the products for 26.
10 but then you’re kind of married to them so if you end up liking them something you want to use long term that would probably be a more cost effective way to do it anyways while these were not a true fail like they didn’t cause any problems for me i really haven’t seen much of a difference my skin’s not dry but it wasn’t dry to begin with my skin doesn’t look greasy i’m not having any kind of breakouts or anything to these products they don’t peel or ball so all those are good things you know i think they’re formulated well they’re just a little pricey and with the different ingredients that i mentioned i do think they have they come with an increased risk of irritation but otherwise i thought i thought they were mediocre too fine the next product i purchased off of yes style for 24.
6 cents it is from this brand i am from and it’s their mugwort cream specifically this product has 73.55 percent mugwort what the heck is mugwort mugwort has been a popular ingredient in korean skincare it also goes by the name artemisia or wormwood this is something that is anti-inflammatory has antioxidant compounds that have actually been shown in laboratory studies so not on actual people but at least in laboratory studies the antioxidants in mugwort have been shown to mitigate some of the damage from ultraviolet radiation exposure and this also is anti-inflammatory so at the end of the day it’s a logical ingredient to consider but remember there are no clinical trials looking at mugwort for any skin condition so we really don’t know a ton about it but it is something that has been used at least in korean culture for a long time it seems to be well tolerated this moisturizer also has shea butter in it which is a really nice occlusive moisturizing ingredient for sealing and trans epidermal water loss it’s got um some ferments in it mistletoe format anytime you see ferment just like rich in humectants and anti-inflammatory compounds it’s got evening primrose which is anti-inflammatory and it’s got poly glutamic acid check out my video on poly glutamic acid but that is definitely a good ingredient and likewise it has panthenol panthenol or panthenol however you want to say that pro vitamin b5 another wonderful ingredient which i have a video on while it doesn’t have any fragrance in it there is definitely a scent to this it smells earthy um and piney it smells like you’re in a forest it’s not it’s not a bad odor and it’s not overpowering and it fades very quickly but it does have a scent to it probably because of the combination of plant extracts in this gives it this aroma the aroma fades very quickly once you put it on the skin but i really have like this you guys it’s a really nice thick moisturizer it kind of reminds me of some of the moisturizers from pyeongchang yule that i’ve really enjoyed using it’s not greasy though and while it has shea butter in it it’s not greasy it absorbs really quickly i think if you are someone with oily acne prone skin interested in trying mugwort give this a try i don’t have any reason to believe that it would cause issue for people generally although of course there’s no such thing as a fool-proof product um but yeah i’ve actually rather enjoyed this i didn’t i haven’t had any issues with it and i do find that my skin has a more luminous glow the following morning i put it on at night time i use it alongside tretinoin so i’m you know i’ve had no issue there it’s not sticky it doesn’t peel or ball and that odor does fade very quickly yeah i’ve been really impressed with this i’m glad i bought it and gave it a try and i’m interested to try some other products from this brand because i saw they have a rice water mask a slit like a sleep mask that i would use as a moisturizer but i’m interested in trying that i have a video all about the benefits of rice water and skin care and you guys know i’ve always enjoyed in the past although i haven’t used it in a while the cosrx overnight spa rice mask or whatever it’s called so i’d be interested in trying theirs to see how how it is but comment below on if you guys have tried anything from this brand but i really like the mugwort and it’s been a it’s been a win the next product is a cleanser that was sent to me from derma e it’s their anti-wrinkle cleanser now this is a wash with active ingredients in it i’m telling you guys that because this is the type of product that you don’t want to gravitate towards for taking off your makeup at the end of the day for truly washing your face instead this type of product is something where you look at the active ingredients and they’re active ingredients that you want to try with a short contact time and in the case of this particular cleanser it’s going to be the glycolic acid in this glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that can smooth out the surface of the skin lift up some superficial hyperpigmentation and it can make many of your skin care ingredients penetrate more evenly and better specifically vitamin c washing your face in the morning with a glycolic acid cleanser can lower the ph a little bit of your skin and just ever so slightly help vitamin c get into the skin a little bit better in other words this is the kind of cleanser that rather than using at the end of the day to wash your face you might want to choose using it in the morning to take advantage of that glycolic acid for those reasons beyond the glycolic acid this has some other ingredients in it i’m just like i don’t understand why why it has retinol and bakuchiol boccuccio is an antioxidant which is believed to have retinol-like properties but that has not been substantiated i do have a video on bacocchio retinol like putting it on and then washing it off i find it very hard to believe that it’s doing anything so i that just seems like an epic waste and this does have fragrance in it now fragrance while it can cause irritation and problems it’s less of an issue and things like this where you’re rinsing it off the skin and not leaving it on but it does have fragrance and then it has papaya fruit extract which you know is another one that’s like please just know papaya fruit has an enzyme in it called papain that theoretically can work to exfoliate the skin but that really hasn’t been substantiated as an effective skin care exfoliant and paper can be incredibly irritating and sensitize you to other ingredients in the product i would never put papaya in a product if i were you know making skin care but they chose to put that in in this which yeah i mean i don’t get and then the other ingredient in this is horsetail extract now that is actually anti-inflammatory i’m fine you know that’s fine and then it’s got sea kelp which is actually very moisturizing personally if i were derma e i would have left out the uh boccuccio the retinol the papaya and the fragrance and then this would be just fine i actually really like this cleanser beyond those ingredients i had no issue i’ve had no issues using this i’ve tried using it in the morning even though i’m not really a morning face washer um and it’s been fine again this is not something though that you’re going to want to use to actually cleanse your skin of makeup sunscreen and those you know dirt instead it’s a product that has an active ingredient that you’re going to use in a short contact time aka a wash form and i’m telling you guys that because you really don’t want to use this around your eyes the glycolic acid can be very irritating in those areas you don’t want to use it really to your neck it can potentially be very irritating there as well you really just want to use it to kind of even out skin tone and smooth out the surface of the skin to allow for better uptake of products this is actually overall i would say for me this is not a fail i’ve actually enjoyed it i just wish they could make this so much better if they left out those ingredients because they’re not really doing anything in this they’re not helping they’re not going to help anybody retinol in a face wash is not going to help anyone pat pain it can cause problems fragrance we know it can cause problems less less so in washout forms but it’s like it’s not even a strong odor like it’s not it’s not a particularly strong fragrance so i like i don’t detect it so it’s definitely not giving people much of an experience i don’t know if it’s masking a foul odor in this sunscreen that i’ve been using a lot and i love and highly suggest is the user in daily hydration cream spf 30.
i’ve been using this as a body moisturizer that happens to have spf in it and i think it’s great on those days where you are inside mostly um because you know it’s you’re at least putting spf on i say that because it’s not water resistant and if you’re going to be outdoors doing activities and things you really want a you know higher spf water resistant body sunscreen but this is great for everyday use and i strongly recommend it especially if you have like a teenager or somebody who refuses to put on sunscreen daily give them this because it’s just like a lotion like a lotion it doesn’t feel or smell or look like sunscreen it doesn’t leave greasy residue all over the place it’s not sticky it absorbs very quickly it’s very moisturizing and you can also try using this on your face i’ve had great success using this on my face with no issues that being said some people especially people with more oily skin sometimes when they take a body product and put it on their face they find it’s too heavy or too greasy but still give it a try this is like seven bucks for eight ounces of a great fragrance free moisturizing sunscreen strongly recommend it’s a chemical sunscreen so there’s not gonna be any cast but because it’s a chemical sunscreen you may find if you do use it on the face it’s a little irritating around the eyes it stings i have not found that to be true for me but that could be an issue depending on how sensitive you are nonetheless great value wonderful body moisturizer that happens to have spf in it in hair care i talked about this recently in a blog and and i think walgreens i’ve really been enjoying this carol’s daughter wash day delight shampoo this is a shampoo intended for scalp cleansing it’s really interesting though the formulation is more of a liquid than it doesn’t feel like shampoo it feels like a liquid like water but when you put it on your scalp and start lathering start massaging the scalp it does turn into a foamy lather i just really like the formulation overall it has salicylic acid in it which can help remove oily buildup off the surface of the scalp and help in controlling dandruff which i really like it’s intended for people with more textured curly hair and i think this formulation is brilliant for those folks in particular because first of all you have the nozzle applicator which helps direct the product to the scalp which is really where you want the cleansing action as opposed to just dumping it all over your hair strands and leaving the hair brittle and dry and dull and it has a nice cooling sensation when it goes over your scalp which can kind of help if you have a really itchy scalp you know a lot of dandruff shampoos and things they’ll put menthol and peppermint to create a cooling effect but that actually can be irritating this doesn’t have those ingredients in it it just feels cool going on the scalp like like a cool drink of water all over your scalp so i really enjoyed it great for removing uh build up but if you have textured hair and you’re using this as your shampoo you know maybe you’re only able to your hair is only able to tolerate shampooing once a week and you’re gonna use this i do think you probably would need to use like a conditioning mask afterwards because the shampoo it’s not it’s not stripping it doesn’t really strip or leave your hair like dry or frizzy but it does kind of leave the hair it might leave the hair feeling a little dull and not as soft so you may want to use a deep conditioning mask definitely give it a try especially those of you who have more textured curly hair i think it’s a great product i’ve really been impressed with it it does have fragrance so if you are allergic to fragrance you will want to avoid it but fragrance again and wash off products less of an issue the next product is one that was sent to me and you probably heard a lot of other youtubers mention it and i think i’m in the minority and my opinion on it and that is urban decay’s mascara lash freak i don’t know how it came to be that i was santa so i’m very appreciative of it i’ve been using it for the past three to four weeks and this mascara is first of all let’s talk about the applicator because i think that’s really what what the main thing is here this mascara has this unique applicator this side you’re supposed to use to add volume to your lashes then this little kind of ball tip is intended for defining the lashes and separating them and then this weird kind of other side is intended to lift the lashes i found this to be a huge fail the mascara goes on it’s the applicator it’s not the mascara formulation itself but the applicator the mascara goes on like this thick gloopy in these thick gloopy globs and just gloms onto the eyelashes and grabs multiple eyelashes at once it goes on very clumpy and as you start trying to use the different parts of the brush to do these things like separate and lift it really just ends up depositing more gloopy mascara onto the eyelashes i do think this gives a very dramatic lash look the mascara formula does not fall out you don’t get those little sprinkles and it does not smudge or smear it stays in place including in the houston humidity i’ve worn it out and about in the worst humidity here and it doesn’t smear as much so the formula is good the mascara when you’re putting it on it kind of grabs multiple lashes at once and deposits like a thick sheet of mascara on it and you might actually like that in my opinion it looks it ends up looking more like like artificial lashes my preference in mascara is separation lift and lengthening and i really couldn’t get that with this the other issue is the brush no matter how i used it it ends up focusing too much of the product on the proximal part of the eyelash the part of the eyelash closest to your eyeball you know to the eyelid as opposed to the tips where personally i find getting you know a nice deposit of mascara towards the tips really gives you that lengthening look it kind of builds on your natural lash a bit and i can’t get that with this here’s the thing i thought well i won’t tell my audience i’m wearing it i’ll just see if anybody comments on it i have gotten some complimentary comments on the mascara i don’t think i’ve gotten any like what are you wearing type comments so if you have complimented my eyelashes in the past few weeks thank you um it’s this mascara i was wearing so those things that i’ve just told you in mind you know you can decide if you want to try it yourself but for me i just would have not been happy with it because i find it’s just too clumpy and difficult to use moving into lifestyle let me tell you about this book that i read it was a bit of a disappointment first of all over the past few months i have just not been reading as much as i typically do all of the changes this year i don’t know i find my attention is i have a harder time paying attention somehow my focus is just not there but yeah i finished this book um by kristin hannah home front now christian hannah is an author i really enjoy i love many of her books she’s a very good storyteller and this book it just it moved very slowly and i found myself frustrated with the characters in particular the husband in this book i just was like come on man get it together like what like support your support your wife i found myself very frustrated with the characters um but the story is good and i think it shows you know kind of how there can be conflict in marriage when there are insecurities you know everybody has insecurities i think it really shows that and i think it shows struggles throughout marriage in that sense but the stories just move very slowly and when you’re frustrated with a character and the story is moving slowly it becomes like difficult to get through i finished it it was good but it’s not my favorite kristen hannah book so yeah this was a fail for me but i’m currently reading a new book called the brothers k which so far i’m really liking so stay tuned if i do this again in august maybe i can update you guys on that book hopefully i can finish it uh this month all right the next thing i have got to share with you guys is i’ve talked about it in my vlogs before but if you don’t watch my vlogs you may have missed it and that is my laptop elevator this has been saving my neck basically what it is is this metal gizmo that you can put a laptop on and elevate the laptop up so that when you’re typing you’re actually looking at the screen and not having to crick your neck and look down oh my gosh it has made a huge difference highly recommend investing in these if you have a laptop just so you can adjust the screen to the height of of your face as opposed to to leaning down i also got a bluetooth wireless keyboard that came with a mouse on amazon that i’ve been really happy with as well it’s pink and it’s it’s really just made a huge difference just minor adjustments um have made working at my desk a lot more comfortable um so that i wanted to share with you guys and then lastly is a food thing that i have been eating every day this summer and i love it it’s my strawberry chia pudding i have been buying the 32 ounces of strawberries at costco and the only thing you have to do is wash the strawberries put them in a blender and purify them purify them puree them as is and then i pour the mixture i pour half of the mixture into a pyrex and then i add a quarter of a cup of chia seeds to that mixture and then i pour the remaining mixture on top the reason i do it that way is i just find it helps the chia seeds mix more evenly and then i just set it up in the refrigerator i don’t add anything to it although if you want to kick it up a notch i suggest adding lime juice it really gives a nice taste to it you can sweeten it if you want to i don’t but i eat that throughout the week i scoop it scoop it out some of it out into a bowl and have it for breakfast it’s so delicious with fresh blueberries really gives a nice antioxidant punch and then the chia seeds are very filling the nice thing about this recipe is not only as a very easy and something you can throw together very quickly and eat on all week but you don’t have the issue of your strawberries going moldy because you puree them it kind of you know decreases their individual surface area and they don’t end up getting moldy provided that you’ve washed them first i’ve really been enjoying that highly recommend it and i’d love to try it with other fruits as they become seasonally available comment below you guys on what you’ve been enjoying this summer especially since we were all mostly spending more time at home what have you been enjoying whether it be skin care or lifestyle and let me know if you like this type of video i think it’s a fun way to share things with you guys especially if you don’t watch my vlogs or if there’s a product that i’ve tried out that you know i don’t necessarily want to do a whole dedicated review on i think this is a fun way to share those those be warned or hey check this out type things um but anyways guys i hope you enjoyed this video if so give it a thumbs up share it with your friends and as always don’t forget sunscreen and subscribe i’ll talk to you guys tomorrow bye you
