Jillian Michaels on Dating, the New Year, & Anti-Aging Book
(upbeat energetic music) Our first guest is a health and fitness guru, she’s got a new book, it’s called 6 Keys. Please welcome back to our show the lovely Jillian Michaels. (audience cheering) (audience applauding) (bass driven hip hop music) I’m wearing special shoes, just for you! Huh, hi.
Mwah. Hi, I love that. Shoe cam, yes ma’am. Shoe cam, I’m ready for my shoe cam moment. Perfect, welcome back. Hi. I haven’t seen you in a while. I know. So much has been going on. Yeah, oh my gosh, craziness.
You know what, I’m sorry about the loss of your home. Oh, thanks. But we’re lucky, you know. Jillian’s got the two kids. Right, I mean, yeah, everybody got out okay. Where were the baby pictures and things like that? On a computer, most of them.
But we did lose, Heidi was very upset because we lost the kid’s memory boxes, so that kind of stuff. And Lou is having a pretty hard time with it. I think it’s like an echo of past stuff. How old is she now? She’s eight now.
Oh, boy, and how old is your other one? He’s six. Six, so Jillian and Heidi have 2 children, Heidi gave birth to Phoenix. Phoenix, the little guy. And Jillian adopted– Lou. Lou. And then Heidi adopted Lou.
And I adopted Phoenix. Right, so they’re all one family. (audience applause) Except, except not anymore. (Jillian laughs) It’s been an interesting couple of years, I would say. Yeah, I find that, you know what, we’re very close friends, and we’re really good co parents, but as much as you love someone, I think over time sometimes you grow apart and you want different things.
And that compromise starts to compromise the relationship. So, we tried for such a long time, and then I was like, “look, you do you, I’ll do me.” How long were you guys together? Nine years. Wow. Yeah.
So that’s all the kids know. Yeah. Between the two of you. Yeah, but we’ve been separated now for, we were separated for a year and now officially like apart, for almost two years now, it’s just kind of quiet up until the beginning of this year.
So what, you wanted to move to Phoenix and she wanted to stay in LA? She wants to have another kid. She’s very home oriented, and for me, I was like, “we’ve got two.” Two, and I already kind of sometimes feel like I’m not spending enough time with the two I have, and spread a little bit thin.
Wanted to get back to traveling more. We just we’re kind of going like this, so. It’s very adult. It’s a shame, but it’s life. You can try, and you can try right, but at the end of the day, you’re faced with a certain reality.
And then the question is, how are you going to manage that? I think we’ve been doing, given the circumstances, a pretty good job. Well, I haven’t been reading or seeing anything on the blogs. So you’ve been doing an excellent job.
Oh, thank you. (audience applause) So, were you pressured, do you think, to get engaged? ‘Cause she got engaged on the reality show, with Lou and Heidi and the kids and stuff. Yeah, no, it’s very interesting sometimes in life, you think that love should be enough, right? And it’s like, I loved her very much.
Hopefully she loved me, but I think I knew inherently, and I think you saw on the show, that there was just not quite enough. She wanted to get engaged. Yeah, and I wasn’t home enough, and it was a struggle.
And I think that that just took its toll over time. And reality TV. That actually was not an issue with us, we were very fortunate. We had a great experience doing that. But I think the pressures of our daily lives, is what brought it to an end, I think, yeah.
So, Lou has Instagram. (Jillian laughs) With over 4,000 followers, from what I understand. We don’t let her go on and look at likes, and followings, and things like that, but she’s very passionate about fashion, and so, she wanted to start a fashion blog.
I was just like, I don’t have time to update this. So we will take like, little pictures that she asks us to, and post them with her commentary. So my brother is her personal photographer, and the two of them- Keep your eyes, keep your best eye.
Oh what did it say? “I didn’t choose the yacht life, the yacht life chose me.” and she has a little, she gave herself like a code name. Her name is Penny Goldilocks Gold. So that was designer errythang.
(Wendy laughs) So she’s having fun? She’s her own little, I mean like, other than the fact that we don’t look entirely the same, this is how you would do if that child was adopted, because it’s like, fashion, pink, purple, gold, Barbie dolls, she just loves, that’s just who she is, inherently.
Does she think boys are cute? She’s 100 percent straight, this child. (audience laughs) Yeah, oh yeah, so. It’s a little distressing. But yes, she’s had a couple of boyfriends. I keep my eye on that very closely.
She likes the Italian boys. Oh! Yeah, she’s definitely got a flavor that she prefers. So, yeah, when I’m like, we’re gonna go real slow. “Can I go to Alessio’s house for a play date?” I’m like, “You may not, but Alessio can come to our house for a play date” then I’m like, “hey, Alessio!” My brother and I stare the kid down, yeah so.
I used to like play dates at our house too. Oh yeah, no, I’m like psycho with that. Are you dating? I am seeing someone. I mean, but were you dating a lot before you ran into this person? I dated a couple of people ’cause again, Heidi and I had been apart for, she’s gonna kill me, oh my God.
I dated a couple of people, unsuccessfully. But this person is– Downtime with this one. Yeah, she’s very sweet. Who is that? She lives in the city. New York? She lives in New York, yes, and she’s just very lovely.
So when you visit her, she says, welcome home? She does not say welcome home. (laughs) Easy, I don’t wanna be talked into another engagement. She’s gonna be like, no, it’s only been five minutes. She’s very sweet and lovely.
It’s easy too, to date bi coastal, to ease your way into it, ’cause your kids are on the West coast. Yeah, it’s been, there have been conversations about like, okay, what happens if this progresses, and it looks like it may.
I mean, she’s just very, there’s nothing else I can say, she’s just an incredibly lovely person. This picture, was taken 10 hours ago, too. 10 hours. 10 hours ago, this is what you were doing. Oh, my God, I’m gonna get crucified, she’s gonna be so mad.
Alright, let’s talk about the book. Because I like what you’re saying. Oh, thank you! Yeah. The book flat out, it’s an anti-aging book. Period, end of story, and I’m not afraid to say it. And the ideas, it’s not about being afraid to get older, it’s about getting older well.
So that you look great, and you feel great for decades to come, and we see people do it all the time. (audience applause) I just wanna know why does J.Lo look like J.Lo at 49? Beyond the fact that she is not just a genetic anomaly, there are very tangible answers that can change anyone and everyone’s life for the better, and that’s really what the book was about, as I was getting older, wanting to look and feel my best.
So what about some of the tips? So, look, this is the six keys, right? What the book stands for, there’s nothing in your genetics that tells you to age, or die. Nothing, no, nothing. So, then you have to ask, why do we, right, so the six keys are these six body processes that essentially can work for us or against us.
So then you’ve got many different things you can do to make that happen, and we just pulled some very simple, accessible tips. So, one you may not even think about is, this is gonna sound ridiculous, it sounded ridiculous to me, was meditation.
But understanding the mind-body connection? Your brain, it’s neuroplasticity. It’s easy and it’s free. Well, it’s easy, it’s free, and it has incredibly tangible effects on your physiology. Literally five minutes a day can add years to your life and calm.
The studies are numerous, the results are overwhelming. So you teach people how to meditate here in your book? No, we go through all the studies of how it effects, quite literally, the shape of your brain, the way that you think, the length of your telomeres that protect your DNA.
It’s a bit scientific. But then I just recommend, I’m like listen, download an app. Start with five minutes a day in bed in the morning, in bed at night, on your lunch hour. And it’s so simple, and so easy.
You’re big fan of the air purifiers, that for years So think of it like, right, you’re breathing about 11,000 liters of air a day. 11,000, and your indoor air is more polluted than the outdoor air. No I don’t think so.
(laughter) I don’t think so. I know it sounds crazy, but actually, I promise you, it is. It’s all the off gassing from the chemicals in the furniture, the cleaning supplies, what have you. An air purifier can make such a massive difference, a couple of house plants, open some windows.
And that will clean so many thousands of liters that you’re breathing every day. ‘Cause what you’re breathing is like, just like eating it. It’s going into your system. Well, one of the things I found very interesting is that you say don’t store your food in plastic, store it in glass.
Yes. So what are we gonna do with all this Tupperware? Recycle it. Okay. Without a brand, all the plastic that we may or may not store our food in. That’s a good idea though. Yeah, glass. We can’t go into it, cause I did wanna talk to you, I’m being wrapped up, I wanted to talk to you about the Keto diet.
Tell me what this is. Of course, so one of the things I do in the book is explain every single fad diet. And why the majority of them are garbage, from a scientific perspective. Do you like the Keto diet? Absolutely not, so here’s where Keto.
Can go! Oh, hell no, so here’s where Keto is getting it’s claim to fame, right. We take a snapshot of a few of the things it does. So, because you’re not eating any carbohydrates, your blood glucose is low, and the idea is that your body will burn fat more quickly.
Okay, fair, and because insulin is low, if you have type two diabetes, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, it will have an impact on those conditions. However, on the other side of this coin, diets that are very high in saturated fats, very high in animal proteins, that don’t have a calorie restriction element, are aging the hell out of us.
They’re very bad for all the six keys that I talk about in the book. And studies are coming out now that they’re shaving years off of our lives, diets like Keto. With that said, you can sensitize your body to insulin, in other words, reverse type two diabetes, improve fertility, turn PCOS around, lose weight, on a common sense diet of balanced protein, fat, and carbs.
I don’t like the word diet, it’s a lifestyle. It is a lifestyle. You’ve gotta change your life. Thank you, Jillian, for being here. Her new book is called 6 Keys, everybody. And everyone in the studio audience is going home with it.
(audience cheers) It’ll be in stores tomorrow. (energetic fun music)
