Jeffree Star’s Skincare Line – What To Expect From The Line & My Opinions On Supporting It
i am not in the best mood today jeffree star came out with a tweet talking about such exciting news for 2021 which is a skincare line and as an expert who has worked in the industry for 10 years and is a medical esthetician i do have some thoughts on this other than this tweet jeffree star has not shared what we can expect from this line based on the overpriced and lackluster products jeffrey uses on his personal skin as well as the seemingly cosmetic illiteracy that he has shared in previous videos we can make some guesses as to what will come of this line there may be some interesting ingredients along with a tinge of racism and misogyny which i think we need to speak about especially considering that i have never formally addressed jeffree star cosmetics or my opinions on them on this channel um i believe that i’ve mentioned jeffree star only twice and i actually have some explanations and apologies for that the first thing that popped into my head was starskin when i saw this tweet that james welsh had replied to and the reason why is because it is a nice play on words and jeffree star seems to feel the need to put his name on absolutely everything i think that that name just makes sense i also did a little bit of digging into u.
s patents the uspto and from the legal side it does look like jeffree star skin does have a live trademark meaning someone who happens to be at the same address that jeffree star is at um has decided to claim this trademark meaning that nobody else can use it take it or sell it within other retail purposes this was done on september 27th of 2019 and it was done by jeffree star cosmetics incorporated here are my thoughts jeffree star obviously has the money and the power and the influence to do this correctly do i think he’s going to do both what’s morally right and what’s right for our skin no i don’t i don’t think people realize how powerful jeffree star actually is how much influence he has and how he can manipulate others through his money and that power specifically i feel uncomfortable talking about this don’t come for jeffree star because you’ll end your career and i also understand from my insights in the makeup industry that i used to be a part of uh that jeffree star uses that influence and that power to get what he wants which is human nature i understand that but i don’t personally agree with it jeffree star has the ability to reach out to contacts cosmetic chemists and dermatologists to make an amazing line is that going to happen i honestly don’t believe so i believe that this is going to be another influencer line it’s probably going to have makeup wipes there may be some good ingredients such as some acids but honestly at this point if jeffree star called it a skin whitening or skin bleaching acid i wouldn’t be surprised this also stems back to racist things that jeffree star has said that i was not aware of until maybe three months ago which we’re also going to talk about further in this video jeffree star has personally mentioned that he uses makeup wipes it didn’t come off like i keep saying neutrogena because that’s what i honestly use on the daily and so i would not be surprised if we see those especially because you can mark makeup wipes up a lot meaning you can create them at a low price and you can sell them 10 to 20 times higher and make a huge profit also looking at some of the products jeffree star uses they are definitely luxury products he has the money and the interest in doing that but when you actually look at the ingredients of this lemur cream or some of these thousand dollar facial oils that he sprays onto his skin there are not a lot of scientifically backed or even antidotal or subjective evidence on how these products and the ingredients in these products work i don’t believe that jeffree star understands skincare right here is a perfect example of cosmetic illiteracy there is a like set of alcohol in here and it’s high up on the ingredient list right there after the seed oil and the glycerin which is like you know whatever but that shouldn’t really be in an eye cream you want to hydrate and there’s an alcohol ingredient so i’m like jeffree star explains that alcohols are drying and again for someone who is a novice in skincare or who has never studied skincare that makes sense but as someone who claims to be an expert in skincare you should know better so as a skincare expert so terrible alcohol subtle alcohol and some of these fatty alcohols are actually very hydrating to skin they are very smoothing on the skin and half of the primers and moisturizers that jeffrey openly uses have these ingredients in them and i understand that learning and understanding skincare is a process in my past 10 years of studying skincare i have made horrible mistakes and i have had to learn and correct them however this happened just a year ago this is cosmetic illiteracy and to go from this and then turn around and say that you’re a skincare expert launching a line without going through formal training i don’t think this is somebody who truly understands or even potentially cares about your skin now please don’t get me wrong going back to power jeffree star could literally go purchase a degree from yale tomorrow he has the contacts and the money and the influence to do that do i think he actually has the initiative to go through that educational process and learn those things no i don’t but that’s also only my opinion and again will he connect with the right people to make a really great line it is possible and we literally can’t tell until we see that inky list those ingredients lists um but i unfortunately don’t have high expectations another prediction is that if jeffree star skincare does launch cosmetic products that have actives such as aha or bha acids or even retinol someone’s going to have a negative reaction and instead of taking a customer service or an accountability approach he’s going to attack people on twitter in comments blaming them and saying that it’s their fault the other thing is the timeline it takes time to formulate to stability test and to safety test these products when you look at this timeline he’s tweeting this now so if it comes out in 2021 that’s six months now when you actually look at the trademark seeing as it’s back in september perhaps this has been in ideation or formulation for over a year however i do not have high hopes for the fact that jeffree star cosmetics is going to be doing the correct amount of testing and due diligence if you’re looking for a line that just smooths over your skin you know a moisturizer that acts like a primer i’m sure that’s what this line is going to give us but if this line starts coming out and talking about acne or hyperpigmentation or actual issues with the skin i’m sorry i don’t believe that jeffree star has ever gone through that i don’t believe that jeffree star has the empathy or the sympathy to understand people who have dealt with skin issues and i do not believe that he has the knowledge or the cosmetic literacy in order to produce products that could help with these again does he have the contacts absolutely i would hope that he utilizes them and does it right like his skincare line i’m hoping that this will remain vegan and cruelty free and even with all of that if we are expecting a 2021 launch is that enough time to actually do it right or is jeffree star just gonna push back the launch by saying that his warehouse was broken into and you know 2.
5 million dollars of his skincare line got stolen but then police reports will come out saying it was only ten thousand dollars like what happened with his makeup line and i understand that maybe that 10 000 the police report came out with could be marked up to be 2.
5 million but either way it looks bad way number one is that he blatantly lied about this and way number two is that those cosmetics are so cheap that they are literally being marked up by a factor of 250.
they are pricing this at 250 times the base price to meet that number how cheap must the raw ingredients be in order for that to be true and again i love myself a good budget skincare routine i’m not going to be out here spending 400 on a lemere eye cream that does nothing and has basic ass ingredients but if you’re making these cosmetics for pennies on the dollar i have a hard time thinking that slave labor and the exploitation of people and resources is not going into this remember billionaires are not hard-working and self-made they are exploitative they are exploiting others to get to that number because even if you worked 100 hours a day that kind of wealth is not possible and that’s what’s being claimed here unless again it’s all a lie which also further points to this lack of transparency and credibility and i’m not only upset with this but i’m personally hurt um i’ve never spoken about this publicly but i used to be a fan of jeffree star back in 2005 2006 2007 in the myspace era hi editing cassandra here i just want to make it clear that i did not know this person used the n-word in their myspace profile um if i would have known that at the time i would not have condoned that or followed that i’m taking screen grabs from old laptops old friends that i’ve had to call up um the wayback machine a bunch of different sources to put these images together to show an accurate representation of you know the scene that i wanted so desperately to be a part of when i was 15.
um but yeah but i felt that that was important to include this is a notice thank you for noticing this notice and it has been reported to the proper authorities that you have noticed this notice here are some old photoshopped pictures of me i was a scene kid and i felt like i didn’t fit in and at that time i was badly experimenting with makeup to try to understand myself and come to terms with my acne my identity and who i was i found jeffree star on myspace i listened to his music i was a follower i bought his merch at hot topic and i went to his shows at warp tour i genuinely looked up to this person and as some crap happened in my life when i was younger when i was going through some changes i didn’t have access to the internet for a period of time and i kind of lost touch with that and it wasn’t until youtube again 10 years later that jeffree star popped back up again i also did not know jeffree star past the plastic surgery slumber parties and the vomiting of pepto-bismol i did not know about his racist past i win by having diamond rims and you win by being informed i did not know about the video where he told someone to go put acid on their face in order to lighten it well maybe if she wasn’t wearing the wrong foundation because i wouldn’t have to splash no battery i said i wanted to lighten her skin tone girl or used the n-word to call out other people in public you stupid trust me when i say as bad as those are um there are far worse ones and plenty of them i did not know about the photos that he used to pose next to the confederate flag and in a video that i did about kat von d who i also used to look up to and who i have also met i shared some thoughts about both of them that i regret my choice of wording for in that video i said this jeffree star is also a great person but after finding out what this person has said how they have taken a lack of accountability and responsibility and hurt others i do have a hard time calling this person a great person my experience meeting jeffree star for the first time in person was a good experience he was kind to me the same thing happened with kat von d which is why i called her a nice person my experience meeting both of them was amicable however do i know about their personality do i know what they are like behind the scenes no i don’t and as more of that has come out i understand that i’m only seeing this from a third party perspective and i’m only hearing about this through my contacts in the makeup world and the makeup industry and again there’s two sides to every story and the truth is somewhere in the middle however based on what i have heard and based on what i have physically seen this is not someone that i can support with my dollars we talk about this on this channel regularly which is why we expose brands in these style videos but skincare is more than just the ingredients and how they work on your skin it’s also about the ethics and the morality of the brands that you support because we have a lot of power in our pockets what we buy companies will create more of economic principles of supply and demand and if we are putting money into the pockets of people who have questionable morals and values who do things that are against what we believe in his people what does that say about us and the world that we are literally using our dollars to help build we need to put our money where our morals are and thankfully there are so many skincare lines out there that we can find skincare that works with our skin and matches what our faces and bodies need as well as aligning with our morals and values we need to be conscious consumers we need to put our money where our morals are and we do need to speak up about the things that we don’t agree with in order to elicit change and again i’m literally sweating because um i’m nervous filming this video but at the same time especially with skincare being thrown into this i feel this is something that needs to be done i like to reflect instead of react and that’s why i hope that i’m not going to regret what i’m about to say next but my initial feelings when i saw this tweet and when i saw the other creators that i love and support speaking about this was jeffree star skincare we don’t want you here i am so proud of this skincare community honestly it’s why i left the beauty community i understand that not all beauty is toxic there are some amazing creators who are doing good things who have morals and values and support others but there is a lot of toxicity in the beauty community and we can’t deny that we don’t need that in skincare skincare is self-care it’s not just a routine it’s a ritual the other creators here support each other yes there are some that make mistakes including myself but those mistakes are addressed quickly and properly with accountability taken we don’t need drama in the skincare world we as a skincare community call out companies for using too much plastic we call out sunscreens that damage the coral reefs we understand that doing good for our skin as well as doing better for our communities and our environment is important and the last thing that i want is corporate capital drama to infiltrate this i understand that that is a reaction my initial gut feelings that is not something that i have had weeks to reflect on i usually like to reflect instead of just react um but it’s something that deeply bothers me it’s this fear that when jeffree star starts dabbling in skincare it’s just going to bring all of this drama and negativity into the community all of this gossip all of this crap that frankly we don’t need skincare is a safe and special place for learning for yes taking accountability but also for doing better and based on jeffree star as a cosmetic line based on jeffree star and the people he chooses to hang out with based on jeffree star and his lack of accountability and actions i have a hard time thinking that much good is going to come out of this for the skincare community that we have built and that i am proud to be a very very small but happy part of i have never purchased a jeffree star cosmetics product the closest i got was the conspiracy palette because i saw that series i did enjoy it i did not know about shane’s racist past or about jeffrey’s racist past and once i posted a video discussing that thank god the members of this beautiful butterfly family this skincare community spoke up about it and said hey did you know about x y and z and unfortunately that’s the moment that i had to learn and then i had to make choices that match my morals and values and align with those morals and values so that i can continue going to bed at night and feeling comfortable putting my head down on the pillow to sleep you’re the one who goes to bed with you every night and wakes up with you every morning and you have to be comfortable with the choices and decisions that you make and that includes your consumer decisions it’s also hard for me to say jeffree star skincare we do not want you here even though that’s how i feel and my feelings are valid i consider myself an inclusive person this community is an inclusive one so saying that we don’t want someone here is hard but at the same time jeffree star has model behavior that shows that he is the antithesis of inclusivity i don’t know who needs to hear this but um being in a dark place and then lashing out from that dark place by being racist means that you’re racist when i’m in a dark place i just watch netflix listen to sad music go to sleep do all three at the same time and i just and this is not just me somehow i feel like most people manage to avoid recording themselves shouting racial epithets at people and then uploading that to the internet and the fact that we let people like jeffree star normalize that behavior by behavior like this in this 2017 video tragic we are all humans and we can all make mistakes and we can all learn from them and again that’s genuinely what i hope for jeffree star and for the other people who are you know wrapped up in whatever drama is going on but based on jeffree star’s actions it doesn’t seem like he’s taking responsibility it doesn’t seem like he’s taking accountability and even in an apology video he brought up things that completely negated what he had said in the last one smokey glow is someone who i love and she has said it better than i ever could what about the video where you talked about in 2017 where you kind of denounced any wrongdoing on your part and you said that you introspected and you took accountability for yourself and your actions completely in a way it’s almost refreshing to hear him admit that when he does say things like that when he has admitted accountability in the past it’s not been authentic it’s not been true it’s been him taking accountability and then blaming other people and also does that mean that every time you’ve taken accountability in the in recent memory in recent history does that mean that you actually weren’t taking full accountability you hadn’t fully looked into yourself are all of those apologies null and void because now you’re admitting that in a for the first time in a very very long time you’re actually introspecting on yourself if all of your friendships and relationships are burning up in flames maybe it’s not them maybe it’s you and i don’t know who needs to hear that i know that the people who are subscribed to this youtube channel are intelligent smart willing to learn willing to admit their mistakes and grow from them but i also know that there are people who are kind of coming through who maybe need to hear that or maybe don’t understand the full scope of how their actions impact others which yes includes our consumer decisions and if you’re new here hi please join the family you’re more than welcome as long as you’re not a misogynist racist who likes to sweep things under the rug and call them deceased instead of dealing with them oops did i go there yeah i did if there’s something that you take from this video it’s to please turn and learn your ingredients don’t trust a big celebrity don’t trust me or another favorite influencer don’t even trust the front of those packages turn and learn them so you understand the story that’s being told in the ingredients list and can find out what is actually worth using on your skin and what is actually going to help you also look into the morals and the values of these companies even if they’re cruelty free and vegan make sure that the companies you are supporting with your dollars are ones that you want to be building and controlling a better future because what we put our money into today is building the corporations of tomorrow i have done videos exposing brands talking about whether or not i like them from both ingredient perspectives and the morality of the companies and i would encourage you to both watch those watch other creators that i can list in the description and recommend but also do your own research which means you taking responsibility and accountability for the places you put your dollar and the things that you put on your skin i’ve never drunk alcohol but if there were ever a time to start 2020 would be the year some more references and resources that i’ve mentioned in this video can be found right here and if you’re actually looking to make a difference i have listed some organizations in the description remember you can donate your money but you can also donate your time you can also donate your voice and your influence on social media tweets likes shares those things help and make a difference the organizations there are for black lives matter for helping animals and children in need as well as our environment and resources for mental health put your money where your morals are always remember to be beautiful both inside and out and i cannot wait to see you in the next video love you guys bye
