Hyaluronic Acid (HA); 7 Proven Anti-aging Benefits
hi and welcome back so if you’re new to the channel my name is vince thanks very much for stopping by you’re very welcome so today i thought i’d look at the next longevity supplement i’m going to add to my anti-aging stack it’s called hyaluronic acid and has many many benefits all of which i’m going to cover in the video and also do not age.
org have started to carry the supplement and offering it this month august 2020 at a discount price so without further ado let’s jump into the video and let’s look at the benefits of hyaluronic acid regard to anti-aging so today let’s cover the benefits of hyaluronic acid so gentlemen it’s unlikely that you will have heard of this supplement although the ladies in your life will have and probably are using it too so in the beauty industry hyaluronic acid or ha is used in a bid to maintain moisture levels in the skin this in turn leads to smooth flawless hydrated and younger looking skin well that’s the claim i won’t get into the hugely inflated cost of beauty products and the minuscule amount of hyaluronic acid that each product contains and that it doesn’t stay on your skin long enough to make a difference maybe i’ll leave that for a future video so what is hyaluronic acid well hyaluronic acid is a clear gooey substance that is naturally produced by our body the largest amount of it can be found in our skin our connective tissue such as bone and cartilage and is in our eyes to keep the molecules in our skin connective tissue and eyes were lubricated and moist its main function is to retain water in fact one gram of hyaluronic acid can retain up to two gallons which is seven and a half liters of water so it’s a very very powerful humectant so let’s look at the applications of hyaluronic acid hyaluronic acid or ha has a variety of uses all of which we will cover shortly and it can be administered in a number of different ways it can be used as a topical serum and it can come in eye drops it can be used or administered through injection and it can be taken as a supplement today i will cover some of the scientifically backed benefits of taking hyaluronic acid links to the scientific literature i use to compile this presentation are in the descriptions below so let me start by talking about dr vera gorbanova and her work in the anti-aging field so she is a professor of biology at the university of rochester she is also the co-director of the rochester aging research center and she sits on the donutage.
org advisory board her research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of longevity and genome stability and on the studies of exceptionally long-lived mammals she has spoken at tedx in cairns and the undoing aging conference in berlin links in the description below to both these talks both are extremely interesting and definitely well worth the watch so the naked mole rat lives on average for 30 years this makes it the longest lived rodent by far the average mouse only lives for four dr vera concludes that this may be because of their abundance of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid or hmw-ha naked mole rats very very rarely get cancer but vera and her team found by removing the high molecular weight hyaluronic acid her naked mole rats became more prone to cancer so it appears that the more hmwha the less likely your cancer risk but please note this study was only done in rodents and human trials are not yet concluded so let’s look at skin care now hyaluronic acid supplements can help make your skin look and feel suppler roughly half of the hyaluronic acid in your body is present in your skin here it binds to water to help retain moisture however the natural aging process and exposure to things such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun tobacco smoke and pollution can decrease the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin taking a supplement may prevent this decline by raising the depleted levels doses of 120 to 240 milligrams a day for at least one month have been shown to significantly increase skin moisture and reduce dry skin in adults hydrated skin all also reduces the appearance of wrinkles which may explain why several studies showed that supplementing with it can make your skin appear smoother so let’s talk about a study that was conducted in japan where 60 japanese male and female subjects aged between 22 and 59 presented with crow’s feet and were randomly assigned 120 milligrams a day or a placebo for 12 weeks their skin wrinkles were evaluated using image analysis of skin wrinkle replicas and their skin condition was evaluated using a questionnaire so the results during the study period the hyaluronic acid group showed an improved level of the wrinkle area ratio and the wrinkle volume ratio than the placebo group after eight weeks of ingestion the hyaluronic acid group showed significantly diminished wrinkles compared to that of the placebo group after 12 weeks skin luster and suppleness had improved greatly compared with their baseline the conclusion the results suggested that hyaluronic acid supplementation inhibits skin wrinkles and improves skin condition the full study report is in the description below so let’s take a look at wound healing hyaluronic acid also plays a key role in healing our wounds it’s naturally present in our skin but its concentrations increase when there is damage and need of repair hyaluronic acid helps wounds heal faster by regulating inflammation levels and signaling into the body to build more blood vessels in the damaged area applying it to skin wounds has been shown to reduce the size of the wound and decrease pain faster than a placebo or no treatment at all hyaluronic acid also has great antibacterial properties so it can help reduce the risk of infection when applied directly to open wounds what’s more it also is effective at combating gum disease speeding up healing after dental surgery and eliminating ulcers when used topically in the mouth so let’s look at hyaluronic acid and joint pain so hyaluronic acid is found in our joints here it keeps the space between our bones well lubricated when the joints are well lubricated the bones are less likely to grind together and cause discomfort and pain ha is also helpful for people who suffer from osteoarthritis a type of joint disease caused by wear and tear of the joints over time taking between 80 and 200 milligrams a day for at least two months has been shown to significantly reduce knee pain in people with osteoarthritis especially for those people aged between 40 and 70.
so let’s discuss acid reflux symptoms new research has shown that taking ha supplements may help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux when acid reflux occurs the contents of the stomach are regurgitated up into the throat this causes pain and damage to the lining of the esophagus hyaluronic acid may help soothe the damaged lining of the esophagus and speed up the recovery process one human study found that taking hyaluronic acid chondroitin sulfate and an acid reducing medication decreased reflux symptoms by 60 percent more than taking just an antacid medication a second study showed the same type of supplement was five times more effective at reducing acid reflux than a placebo now research in this area is still relatively new and more studies are needed to replicate these results nevertheless these outcomes are certainly promising so let’s look at hyaluronic acid and dry eye approximately one in seven adults suffer from the symptoms of dry eye now this is because of reduced tear production all because their tears evaporate too quickly hyaluronic acid is excellent at retaining moisture and is often used to treat dry eye eye drops containing ha have been used to reduce dry eye symptoms and improve overall eye health contact lenses that contain slow release hyaluronic acid are also being developed and this is a possible treatment for dry eye in addition hyaluronic acid eye drops are frequently used during eye surgery to reduce inflammation and speed the wound healing process to date no studies have examined the effects of ha supplementation on dry eyes but i’m pretty sure it will be a future area of research so let’s start talking about hyaluronic acid and bone strength new animal research has begun to investigate the effects of ha on bone health two studies have found that hyaluronic acid supplements can help slow the rate of bone loss in rats with osteopenia test tube studies have also shown that high doses of ha can increase the activity of osteoblasts these are the cells responsible for building new bone tissue while its effects on human bone health have not yet been studied early animal and test tube studies seem extremely promising so let’s look at ladder pain and hyaluronic acid so somewhere between three to six percent of women suffer from a condition commonly known as painful bladder syndrome this disorder causes abdominal pain and tenderness along with a strong and frequent urge to urinate while the causes of this condition are unknown kj has been used to help relieve the pain and the frequent need to urinate this is done when directly inserted into the bladder via a catheter it’s unclear why hyaluronic acid help helps relieve these symptoms but researchers hypothesized that it helps repair damage to the bladder tissue making it less sensitive to pain studies have not yet determined whether oral hyaluronic acid supplementation is as effective as application via a catheter so moving on let’s look at the side effects of taking ha as a supplement hyaluronic acid is generally very safe to use with very few reported side effects as the body naturally produces it allergic reactions are very rare one study in 60 people with osteoarthritis who took 200 milligrams a day for one year reported no negative side effects whatsoever however its effects during pregnancy all breastfeeding have not been thoroughly studied so these groups should avoid supplementing with it there is also some evidence that cancer cells are sensitive to hyaluronic acid and taking supplements could make them grow faster for this reason it’s generally advised that people with cancer or those who have a history of cancer in the family avoid supplementing with it hyaluronic acid injections into the skin or into joints have a higher risk of side effects however negative reactions are mostly associated with the injection procedure rather than the hyaluronic acid compound itself so do not age.
