How To ACTUALLY Layer Your Skincare Routine – Ft The Inkey List A D ✖ James Welsh

hello everybody welcome back to my channel where we talk about skin care grooming and sometimes hair so that sounds like a thing make sure you are subscribed also come and follow me on instagram where it posts a lot of stuff you’re not going to see here on youtube you know what it can actually be really really tough to build a skincare routine even the most basic skincare routine there could be a lot of thought behind it you know a skincare routine that works for you that is actually very effective that targets your individual skin care concerns how to layer those products effectively and safely what you can and can’t use together which should be using at night this is what you should be using in the day it can get very very confusing the more you think about building a skincare routine the more there is to think about especially when you want to discover all the amazing ingredients that are out there for you is this the worst shirt i own let me know i can’t stop looking at it no it’s cute in today’s video sponsored by the inky list we are going to talk about how to build your own skincare routine whether you consider yourself a beginner or a pro how to layer those products effectively and how to avoid any bad combinations if any so a bit about the ink list first of all if you are familiar with my channel you will be familiar with the inky list the inky list goal is to empower us as consumers with the knowledge of skincare the science behind skin care ingredients formulation skin care routine as a whole helping us to navigate through what has become a very very crazy world of skin care and help us listen to what our skin really needs they have a ton of amazing products that do focus on single ingredients however unlike other single ingredient brands their formulations i find a lot nicer to use not only do they focus on that single ingredient but those ingredients are always supported and powered by other beneficial ingredients making the formulations nicer to use they work great on the skin and i find their products to be a bit more like well-rounded products they more highlight a single ingredient than it just being a single ingredient product if that makes sense the support ingredients that they put in are important because they can help things like lessen the irritation of a potentially irritating product it avoids sticky serums it avoids peeling skin care and peeling makeup and their products are super affordable i believe the most expensive product is about 15 pounds super accessible as well so let’s talk about how to build your skincare routine with so many different products and so many different brands and so many people coming onto social platforms and telling what you can and can’t do it’s very very difficult to consider what you need for your skin or even what you will or won’t benefit from the inky list have this amazing test that you can take it’s called the skin care recipe builder and it helps you build a routine that’s personalized to you and based on your skincare concerns so super easy to do just answer a few of the questions once you’re done you have a personalized morning and evening routine you can just add both the routines to your basket or you can select products that suit your budget too they also have their ask inky service which is available 24 7 if you have any further questions or even if you’re not looking to purchase anything you just have questions about your skin they’re there to help you out with every product on the website as well they break down the key ingredients super simple no faff in between no science jargon that you’re not going to understand but they don’t leave out any important information so with every product you order or every product you want to buy it tells you exactly how to use it the inky lists are very very good as well just wanting to educate their consumers so i’m sure they won’t mind me saying that if you already have a product for example you already have a nice cinematic serum and they’re recommending a nice cinema serum at least you know that’s something that’s good for your skin you don’t have to buy another one but also with a recipe builder they’re not going to shove a load of stuff together that doesn’t really work together or makes one product useless or irritates your skin in a combination you know so now that you have the routine that’s perfect for you let’s talk about layering this is kind of like a really hot topic is there science behind it kind of yes but also no but there is a recommended way to apply your skin care that could be because of the thickness of the product or just how certain ingredients interact together we’re going to stick to the inky list guide on how to lay your skincare because to be honest it’s the best one and it’s personally how i like to layer my skincare too so on all the packaging of the inklist products you have here little diagram that tells you how to lay your skincare so you have cleanse hydrate treat moisturize and spf it even breaks down that ferve on the side of the treatment it tells you how to break those down so toners exfoliating treatments targeted treatments and eye treatments and it will tell you where that particular product fits within that routine and it really is that simple that’s all there is to it and that’s how easy includes makes it to understand your skincare routine still sciencey but understandable so i’m going to show you my inky list routine and how i would layer it i did do the skin recipe and kind of built a routine from that because i cheated a little bit i swapped a few products out because there’s a few i wanted to try a few of these products you would have seen on this channel already but there’s a few new ones i wanted to talk about today so let’s talk about the cleanse stage the first step of your routine i love two cleansers from the inklist the oat cleansing balm which i’ve discussed on this channel before they’re huge they’re huge where is it oh it’s in the bathroom they they just last such a long time but today i want to talk about the salicylic acid cleanser salicylic acid is by far my favorite exfoliating ingredient as some with oily skin i get a very like porous nose my nose can start to look very congested when i don’t exfoliate and i break out not often but when i break out i get these tiny little annoying breakouts i’m like where did you come from why are you here so salicylic acid is my go-to exfoliating ingredient as well as evening out my skin tone as i said salicylic acid works to make my pores clearer less congested and also helps keep my oils in check as well that’s all because salicylic acid penetrates a little bit deeper into the skin clearing them out whilst removing dead skin cells helping to prevent future breakouts so in this product we have 2 salicylic acid to help exfoliate and everything i just said above alan toen which is extremely soothing zinc helps regulate sebum production and glycerin glycerin keeping our skin nicely hydrated and giving us that kind of soft feeling after we cleanse this also has coconut derived surfactant so what that usually means is that it’s not going to give us that kind of like overly dried out feeling that you can get from some cleansers so once or twice a day depending on what my skin’s looking like how like usually in summer i would cleanse with an exfoliating cleanser more but once or twice a day i massage this gently into damp skin i leave this on for a little bit as well it’s good to allow the exfoliants and cleansers to get to work so i’ll leave it on for about two minutes and then rinse away i was actually surprised at how i’ve used other salicylic acid cleansers before that were a little bit drying i have to be honest but this one i was surprised at the texture it’s like a slightly thicker gel type texture that feels super smooth on the skin rinse away and your skin feels untouched the next stage is to hydrate and it’s at this stage that i would usually use hydrating toner but for some reason i’m not today i don’t know i’m not so now we go straight into treatments inky lists as i mentioned do an amazing job at breaking down when to use your treatments in what order because as we know i think a lot of us are very familiar with the order of skin care but when it comes to that middle stage of serums when all the the majority of the actives comes in it’s like okay but how where do we use this so as i mentioned the incidents break it down to exfoliating treatments targeted treatments and then eye treatments so i have an exfoliating treatment i have the pha toner now i’ve already gently exfoliated my face with the salicylic acid cleanser so am i over exfoliating here maybe but my skin can actually take it i’ve been exfoliating for years and there are days where i will layer up my exfoliating acids and that goes for most actives if your skin can take it and you’ve been using them for a long time and you’ve built up your skin’s tolerance then go ahead and use them together however it’s always recommended you start slow and steady and usually one active per routine the inky lists for example recommend not mixing vitamin c and retinol together opting to use vitamin c in the morning and retinol at night this is just to avoid any sensitivity in case you’re new to using actives as well as using exfoliating acids um on a different day to retinol again just lower the risk of irritation i know i’ve been using retinol for almost a year now and even now sometimes it can be a bit too much when mixed with other actives again a lot of these actives work well together but they can be irritating so if you are new to actives one at a time morning and night different days slow and steady so back to the pha toner i keep looking for it it’s not here it’s in the bathroom so the idea of pha that’s like new to the market exfoliating acid is that it has a larger molecule size than say an aha so it still does exfoliate removing those dead skin cells helping even out skin tone and texture but the larger molecular weight also means it only has surface level penetration meaning it’s potentially less irritating so if your skin has found exfoliating acids irritating in the past like your bhas and ahas pha is pretty good exfoliating toner to go for i use bhas and ahas all the time but for me um phas are a good one to use alongside other exfoliating products like serums and cleansers and even moisturizers just to lower that chance of potential irritation but pha also has amazing plumping and hydrating properties pha is a humectant so it helps retain that moisture and we also have soothing aloe vera in here as well so you you will see this with a lot of them exfoliating toners and tonics it just creates that kind of like soothing base i also i also use this on my knees like i get very dry knees for some reason my my knees um my elbows and i’ve also been using this as a deodorant i saw lab muffin beauty science michelle talk about how ahas make a good deodorant so i thought maybe my phas would do it i have i have a face pha and a body pha that’s in my office i use the two separately and i use one as a deodorant and it’s actually really really good i still use a deodorant with it um but it definitely lessens any potential smell like i don’t feel like i’ve really smelt for a long time so phase for me kind of just go everywhere on the body even my armpits niacinamide if i had to just use one product one ingredient one no one product for the rest of my life it would be a niacinamide serum for me personally in my personal experience i feel like niacinamide made the biggest difference in my skin i didn’t realize that um it was in all the essences i was using back in the day i thought these essences are really doing something good for my skin i wonder what it is is the niacinamide that they put in it niacinamide has helped so much regulate my sebum production when i was using a niacinamide serum twice a day every day for like a couple of months my sebum regulated my oils regulated to the point where i was confident in using thicker moisturizers i was confident in using thicker sunscreens because i wouldn’t have to worry about getting greasy throughout the day it’s also my go-to ingredient for when i have tiny little breakouts when um after the breakout when i’ve got a dark spot it helps with redness the appearance of enlarged pores it helps your skin barrier it’s a really great all-round ingredient and to have it into the serum this soothing light serum it’s like oh it’s like um what’s that it’s not milky at all i always say milky it’s not sticky it’s smooth it’s lightweight it’s a very lightweight gel texture it’s got squalene in there as well so very very moisturizing but it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin we have alan alan toen or alan toyne i don’t know very soothing again and then we have hyaluronic acid as well so again a humectant this nice cinnamon serum is one i recommend to a lot of people um because first of all it’s very budget-friendly but it’s also just a good all-round serum one of my most basic routines i absolutely loved back in the day is a cleanser a toner a hyaluronic acid serum a niacinamide cereal and a moisturizer and this serum just kind of embodies that that key treatment stage for me it’s a serum that i feel everyone can benefit from and i would say this is like a must-have this is a must-have in your collection you know if you’ve got your night separate nice cinnamon separate hyaluronic acid i like just having having the two i don’t know my next treatment is 50 vitamin c and egf i get asked about this product a lot because it used to be in my skincare routine videos all the time every single routine and it disappeared because people were like do you not like it anymore but no unfortunately when you review when it’s your job to review skincare once you finish one serum you kind of have to move on to the next to make sure you’re reviewing reviewing products even if you love that serum and you might potentially hate the next one you know it’s my job to test these i love i love this serum i just had to move on but i’m i’ve gone back but it’s definitely within my top four vitamin c serums now this contains a scorable glucoside which is a vitamin c derivative we all know that working with pure vitamin c and keeping that stable can be you know really really tough for some products so that’s why brands are putting their focus on derivatives of vitamin c so a scoreboard glucoside is a great derivative it’s super stable and it’s also very effective at penetrating the skin when it does penetrate the skin it turns into pure vitamin c so does everything you expect from your regular vitamin c brighter skin tones helps with hyperpigmentation antioxidants all that but we also have one egf so i’m not overly familiar with epidermal growth factors but to my understanding these are basically like super healing ingredients right that speeds up the process of your skin at a cellular level so helping to reduce signs of aging hyperpigmentation hydration it strengthens our skin barrier it prompts new healthy fresh out the womb skin cells for younger looking skin and that’s really what i love about the serum is it just makes my skin look nice it looks healthy it looks bright everyone i’ve recommended this to absolutely loves it it’s very very good for all skin types it’s lightweight enough for oily skin it’s got this slight hydration to it where it’s not gonna like i feel like a lot of like like gel type serums um can feel quite drying to like the drier skin types but this is nice and hydrating it doesn’t sit on the skin either it’s not sticky it’s not grainy it doesn’t smell like money like a lot of vitamin c serums can do and it plays amazing with other skincare products as well it doesn’t interfere i love the packaging i want all my serums in a pump i absolutely love the pump packaging finally the moisturizer so i’ve actually just started using this moisturizer myself this is the peptide moisturizer now this is a moisturizer that i recommend to all my friends who aren’t really into skincare but i feel just need a good all-round kind of moisturizer as part of usually they’re very very basic routine but i’ve not tried it myself so i thought i better give this moisturizer a go and i like it i really like it so whilst this is part of my friend’s basic routine this moisturizer itself is far from basic it has all the building blocks of what you would want from a good moisturizer essentially this is an anti-aging or well aging as my friend kelly driscoll would say this is a well aging moisturizer which contains a 1 hydrating peptide solution so peptides are essentially amino acids that act as the building blocks of things like collagen elastin keratin all those things in our skin that keeps our skin looking younger and fresher they help with the firmness of our skin and basically just keeping our skin in check keeping that barrier nice and strong the thing with peptides as well is that it’s usually best paired with antioxidants so we have antioxidants in here as well they really are like a powerhouse team when it comes to that well aging of your skin this moisturizer has two percent royal epigen p5 i have no idea what it is but apparently that helps with skin tone and the delay of aging skin cells and then you have like glycerin and butylene glycol you know everything you would expect to see in a moisturizer for me this went on a little bit thick to begin with i was like oh god i’m gonna hate this i was like it’s not rubbing in this gonna be bad for my oily skin but you rub it in and then it sits just nice and kind of like nice on the skin it’s not too heavy at all i’ve gone to bed with this very comfortably on my skin and woke up with not dry skin so yeah i’ve been really liking this it’s early days with this product but for me it’s just a nice moisturizer as the weather’s getting colder as well it’s nice to have something that can just feed your skin what it needs so there we have it that is how to build your routine how to layer it and then a few little ingredients you may want to keep an eye on when using together i want to keep that super simple as a reflection of how really simple the ink lists break all that down for us you know and they’re packaging the routine order and then how to break it down it’s super super easy to understand and for me the best way to layer your skincare routine if you watch my skincare routines you know that’s how i lay on my skincare too if you’re new to the skincare world they have all the information you need without it being overbearing it’s very very easy to understand and they’re a brand who really really listens to their consumer and the care community as well and we appreciate that when it comes to skincare brands but yes i hope you enjoyed that video let me know if you tried any of the inklist products down below if you tried any from my recommendations previous and if you’re going to try any from this video thank you again to the inclusive for sponsoring today’s video but that’s it for me now i will see you next time
