Hey guys welcome back! it’s Felicia 😀 and Rowena 😉 body acne, dry flaky skin and bumpy chicken skin may not be the cutest these mostly temporary skin conditions are something we’ve all probably experienced or will at some point experience in our lives so today we’ll be diving into the causes of body acne dry flaky skin and keratosis pilaris or bumpy skin how to prevent these skin conditions lifestyle tips ingredients that are good for each condition and of course product recommendations and we want to thank “Nécessaire” for sponsoring this video to share with you guys all the tips on body care dry and sensitive skin Ahhh my people! so having dry skin usually isn’t a serious issue but itchy, tight, flaky ashy scaly skin can be uncomfortable! and can make you feel little bit self-conscious mmm-hmm especially when you see the actual fish flakes like “pffft” oh that’s just half my skin it is snowing there are many causes and contributing factors to dry skin on the body but most likely the cause of dry skin is damage to the skin’s natural barrier but also if you’re just dry skin type, you’re born with this now let’s go over the external and internal factors that caused the breakdown of that trusty brick wall the first is the weather our skin tends to be driest and most croissant-like during the cooler months when temperatures and humidity levels drop cooler months also mean more heat like heaters and fireplaces which all further reduce humidity and dry-out our skin but also hot baths and showers can dry out our skin like hot water causes damage to the keratin cells located in the outermost layer of our skin the epidermis and by disrupting these cells it creates dry skin and prevents cells from locking in moisture things like frequent swimming particularly in heavy chlorinated pools can also be very drying on the skin but also the hair and the body in general there’s also harsh soaps and skin care products as they’re formulated to remove oils so if right after showering you feel that your skin is exceptionally tight and dry no matter if it’s your face or your body it may be a sign that the cleansers you’re using are a little too harsh and now moving on to internal factors so genetics just like some of us are born with oily skin some of us are perpetually dry I remember my paternal grandma’s legs look so dry it is like the photo of the desert like dried-up desert bed and then I thought it was cool because I had it too and then my Dad and I would bond over shaking our pants in the winters especially and it’s just like “pffttt” white flakes! for me like the dry skin of my family is passed down from generation to generation now moving on to ingredients and products that are good for dry skin hyaluronic acid is super hydrating and can quench the thirstiest of skin and ceramides help to create a barrier to prevent moisture loss and block the harsh external pollutants from actually seeping in and getting through the cracks of our skin Niacinamide can help build protein in the skin and lock-in moisture so it’s all about rebuilding that skin barrier and that brick wall there’s also antioxidants like vitamin C and E to help limit the production of free radicals which can damage skin cells and damaged skin cells equals compromised barrier equals moisture loss let’s start with body wash I’ve never gotten this excited about body wash in a very long time so the first thing is the “Nécessaire” body wash first of all the packaging (Fel: “Bing!”) and then just twist open comes out twist close I liked how they even say what it has the formula contains vitamin A, B, C, E omega-6 and 9 and antioxidants so basically everything we just said up top is listed in here yeah and i think what you guys will also appreciate is that it comes in fragrance free so it’s just like the natural smells of it but then they also came out with a eucalyptus and a sandalwood which offers this very subtle woody earthy scent yeah yeah she loves eucalyptus so the body wash is a daily multivitamin cleanser for the health of our skin they use three oils there’s marula, cacay and meadowfoam which all help to nourish and soften the skin these mild plant derived surfactants gently cleanse without stripping or leaving residue I actually don’t really use cleansers because i feel like they’re just too drying yeah like generally I just water to rinse but after using this i feel a difference with how moisturizing my skin feels afterwards and how clean it feels if anything it just helps to refresh and replenish that dryness because it has all these fatty acids and vitamin E is also like a naturally occurring substance that is found in our sebum and so when you put on vitamin E it’s so nourishing and any of you who have dry skin this is your best friend and it has like all the vitamins in it so yeah I know what you mean it’s actually a very smooth foam as well as vitamin E, vitamin C is also found at high levels in the dermis or the outer layers of our skin as well as the dermis layer the inner layer of our skin it’s a cancer-fighting antioxidant there’s also omega 6 and 9 and omegas in general serve as the essential building blocks of skin surface layers creating a smoother more even younger looking and healthier complexion similar to the pH levels on our skin we also want to find a nice balance on our body and this one is between 5.
5 and 6.5 it’s at this optimum level where it’s soft and supple and it can fend off its own next is the Dove Beauty Bar for sensitive skin and this is the most no frills like been around for years unscented hypoallergenic and a fourth of this little bar of soap is just moisturizing creams so it’s super hydrating and does not strip your face of too much oils and it just feels good after you use I actually use this growing up Oh G bar of soap.
… next is the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm Intense repair moisturizing cream this is pretty intense and then it’s super thick, it’s non-greasy it just absorbs so quickly into your skin this is for dry skin to extra dry skin I use it this morning you’re so sweaty now my arms are wet wet and moisturized all right so the key ingredients are prebiotic thermal water, shea butter, glycerin and niacinamide and last we have the “Nécessaire” lotion the ingredient profile is very similar to their body wash there’s vitamin A, B3 which is niacinamide C, E, Omega 6, 9 and antioxidants similarly to the body wash there’s also three blends of oils the marula, cacay, meadow foam and this infuses skin with vitamins and immediately moisturizes and softens the skin and the niacinamide helps to restore and strengthen the skin’s surface for that overall healthy glow that we all want when we start revealing a little bit more skin when it gets a little warmer which is now this just spreads much easier over the body and then you’ll just see that your skin tone as well as the texture and the firmness will visibly improve and you will prevent things like stretch marks happening because stretch marks happen when there’s not enough oil and your skin cracks and it’s just broken skin there’s also shea butter, jojoba and olive which are all uber hydrating! and there’s also green tea, apple orange, lemon and vitamin E so this moisturizer is at the pH level of about 4.
7 to 5.7 so once again in a very healthy range for anyone to use moving on to body acne acne tends to thrive wherever there is a high concentration of oil glands similar to the face the upper half of our body has more sebaceous glands compared to the other areas of the body and sebaceous glands are attached to follicles or pores and these glands produce sebum which keep our skin moisturized so this is why our face, chest and back are more prone to breakouts our lifestyle plays a huge role in our body breakouts it could be genetics, hormones, stress and sweat these are basically all the reasons for any sort of inflammation on our skin right? because if wet, nasty and dirty we produce nasty and dirty things so sweat it’s our body’s natural cooling system to help prevent overheating but the bacne happens when we finish a workout and excess sweat seeps into our clothes and pores since the sweat kind of has nowhere to go and then the hair follicles on the back trap the sweat and bacteria which then causes breakouts that’s why the first thing you have to do after an intense workout or any sort of physical activity or even if you’re just like walking in the sun sweating profusely is to remove those sweaty clothes including yes your sports bra! and anything after like wearing it to the gym and back because actually if you think about it the gym is pretty nasty it smells kind of like bacteria! did you know that your clothes and accessories are also creating friction that can aggravate your body acne? the body acne caused by friction is actually called acne “mechanica” yes mechanica is caused when physical factors such as pressure, friction or rubbing against the skin may contribute to acne next is diet and hormones so actually we talked about this in a lot of previous videos what we eat affects our bodies but also the hormones in it so if you have sensitive skin things like sugar, dairy can inflame your body and also if you guys haven’t noticed when it comes around to that time of the month for us we also have a different shift in dietary preferences and we tend to gravitate towards very sugary foods Sugarrrr!!! yeah and this all effects hormones which is actually personally where I experienced the most bacne I’ll know that it’s coming that my period is coming because it starts to show on my back and my shoulders and also in the chest area as well as the chin it’s like this whole raging army of thing here yeah definitely controlling things like how much sugar you eat how much you’re drinking and substituting that for things like matcha or tea or just like healthier, no sugar alternatives during these like kind of crucial two-week periods actually makes a whole lot of difference in terms of controlling it from the inside because once again sugar and dairy they directly trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oils during this time if your sebaceous gland is producing more sebum that means there’s higher chances of breakouts occurring in all parts of the body right so just control your sugar and dairy intake at this time and you’ll be good now moving on to cleanliness on average we spend about six to eight hours sleeping every night stewing in your own juices and bacteria without even knowing it when you sleep you’re shedding off all the dead skin cells and bacteria as well as hair oils and even sweat that inevitably end up soaking through your sheets so you’re like a giant burrito of all this It’s like a cocktail concoction delicious.
… so washing your sheets more often can help but you can also consider sleeping on sheets made with natural fibers just like our clothes not only are fabrics like cotton more breathable but it also transfers less oils moving on to general body care so the first thing is exfoliate but do it gently it sits in with your face if you have a village of happy pimples you’re not going to want to exfoliate that away because it could spread you do feel like cutting it off yeah you want to do it but like you shouldn’t so everything that you shouldn’t do on your face acne is the same as body although a good method is dry brushing so dry brushing helps with the circulation of the blood it also helps to decrease any sort of fluid retention you know when we’re like feeling bloated in our body our ankles, wrists and hands can also get bloated so actually dry brushing before you shower is a really great way to not only shed the dead skin but it could also prevent certain types of breakouts coming out because you are physically exfoliating it takes a little bit of time because that brush is quite coarse it feels really good after a while and it’s like gentle light brushing you’re not like “huuhuuhu.
…” and the tip with using dry brush you start on the outer edges of your limbs and then work it in towards the heart like a light pressure but long strokes did you know that your shampoos and your conditioners can also cause body acne? so yeah when you’re showering it’s best to wash your body after you shampoo and if you condition your hair and you like to have the condition soak into your hair then when you wash it off try to do so like away from your body because actually Kendall Jenner’s dermatologist also wrote in an article that the reason for a lot of acne that grows on your back is actually the accumulation and not washing off of these products acne forms the same way no matter where it pops up on our bodies it can be treated with similar ingredients as our face so first is salicylic acid and we all know this is especially effective on our face but what we use on our face we can use on our body and it works by dissolving the skin’s keratin and can penetrate into the pores to dissolve dead skin buildup because it is a chemical exfoliant BHA it also helps in shedding that top layer of skin the AHAs are also really good for your skin glycolic acid, lactic acid, any acid really it will help you shed that top layer of your skin renew more new beautiful skin and then help unclog pores and then we also have retinol so retinols were actually first found to help with acne because it helps minimize the amount of sebum in the pores which then reduces the actual appearance of the pores which then means it’s less likely that you’ll have breakouts and there’s also eucalyptus and tea tree which help to soothe the body and the skin so any product that works for your face really will do the same thing for your body the really good ones will have a blend of AHAs as well as soothing ingredients to help moisturize so going straight on to our favorite body recommendations the Clinique Acne Solution Cleansing Face & Body soap when I was doing research on this I was just like Fel I want to slather all these bars of soap on you she was like you should put them all on a stick and use them together there’s 5 that are all really great for bacne and for this bar specifically it helps clear and prevent acne on the face and body by gently removing dirt with encapsulated salicylic acid so after you use it your skin will feel so calm and smooth and comfortable and not drying because the skin on our body is a little bit thicker yeah so they can tolerate higher percentages of things like salicylic acid without completely drying it out but if it’s for face and body and if it says it’s for face and body then you can be like “yeah”! and there’s also the Fresh Umbrian Clay Purifying Treatment Bar this one’s a little bit expensive at $41 but this is 100% pure Umbrian clay and it purifies your skin, balances the skin eliminates dead cells and you can use this so many ways you can use it as a face wash does it also remove all bad memories of my life? probably.
…. you could use it as a spa treatment so you just wet it and then just on your face and then let the clay kind of stay there for a couple of minutes before washing it off it can be a mask or you can just use it to wash your face so there’s many, many uses for this one that I’ve been really loving and using a lot lately is the Paula’s Choice Acne Body Spray so this is the first body spray for acne that I’ve ever come across and it’s really awesome because it’s a medicated spray that includes salicylic acid and just having that nozzle option of like getting to those places that if you’re single you can never get there! if you have no parents to like rub you.
… Hello roommate it’s that time of the night! can you rub my back? but this is really good because after the shower when your pores are open I like to just spray it on my back even my chest and you can either just leave it there to dry or you kind of like rub it in a little bit and then you can either go in with a moisturizer or you can just leave it like that and this has 2% salicylic acid I felt that over one to three days it considerably went down like the redness, the inflammation sometimes it even itches because it’s like doing its thing it’s like being a pimple actually a very fine mist and then I just like do maybe five of these depending on how generous I’m feeling towards myself or how angry and aggravated it is and last we have bumpy skin, chicken skin or keratosis pilaris call it what you want to call it this is a very common skin condition which manifests as tiny bumps on the skin and it’s commonly found on this upper arm region but as well as thighs and sometimes cheeks this is actually a skin condition that almost anyone can get because it is a buildup of keratin which is a hair protein so basically the keratin gets blocked by the skin and it starts growing and it causes a bump but it has no opening and so it just stays as a bump keratosis pilaris is most common in people with fair skin it also isn’t like an infectious it’s like a harmless thing on your skin that could be more pronounced that could come out during the winter colder months because it is so dry and dryness can make these bumps more noticeable similar to eczema the exact reason for why keratin builds up in our body and our skin is unknown but you know it’s one of those things that happens to your body but actually it probably isn’t just doing one thing it’s a mixture of moisturizing, exfoliating drinking water and making sure that dead skin isn’t blocking it so actually there are a few remedies that you can try at home try to do these all together and see if it naturally clears up but also using the moisturizers that we mentioned and for anyone out there try dry brushing it feels really.
….. dry brush me! yeah….it would like go “hufttt”! it’s like scaling a fish if I did it on you but it’s really nice I think after a while you find that like your scales actually go away just try like a concoction of all these things and then you can see maybe the chicken goes away bye chicken! so that was our video, all about body care I mean when it comes to the body we have just as many problems as it can be on the face and there’s similar fixes actually it’s all about hydration and moisturizing if it’s like any body rash or anything you still can use any of the products that we’ve mentioned it’s for anybody! Any body 😉 the only tip I would say is if it doesn’t say for face and body just keep it to the body don’t be lazy and use it on your face but if it’s for your face but doesn’t say for your body you can probably use it for your body you can do this way, but you can’t go this way so thank you again to “Nécessaire” for sponsoring this video after getting their product I think that’s when my interest in body care started like peaking yeah! because their whole packaging and their whole like mission is about caring about our bodies as well as we care about our face and if you guys are interested in checking out their product of course everything is linked down below and we’ll see you in the next one, Bye!
