Create A Skincare Routine That ACTUALLY WORKS! A Basic Skincare Routine ✖ James Welsh
hello everybody welcome back to my
channel where we talk about skin care
grooming and sometimes hair so that
sounds a good thing make sure you are
subscribed also come and follow me on
instagram where I post a lot of stuff
you’re not gonna see here on YouTube I
mention a few previous videos that this
year everyone seems to be putting their
skincare routines right back to the
basics is a good thing and especially
now as like you saying as well none of
us are really in the position to be
buying new things is good kind of take a
look at your skincare routine and
reassess a lot of us including myself
can just be adding crazy amounts of
products to our routines and sometimes
if you would get a little bit lost as to
what it is exactly want from our routine
so today I’m gonna talk about building
that basic skincare routine and this is
what I do whenever my skincare routine
isn’t working or I’m having some type of
reaction I stop everything I look and I
follow this structure of a skincare
routine and kind like start again
refresh a lot this stuff you’re probably
already gonna know but if you are new to
skincare and this is a good way to start
building up your skincare routine so the
main steps are I consider really really
important are the cleansing stage the
toner and hydrating stage we’ll talk
about this one in a bit because I know
that everybody feels it’s necessary and
it’s not the treatment stage a
moisturizer and a sunscreen those for me
are the fundamentals and the toner and
the treatment stage for me are the
stages that I feel are really easy to
incorporate and still consider a basic
routine but really make the biggest
difference and will give you quick and
obvious results as well let’s start off
with it cleansing picking a cleanser is
super easy but finding a cleanser that
your skin loves is a lot more difficult
I’ve used so many cleansers a lot of
them are very basic and normal but every
so often you’ll stumble across one that
for some reason your skin absolutely
loves the sign of a good cleanser for me
is not feeling squeaky clean after your
skin not feeling tight and remember
cleanser doesn’t have to foam to mean
it’s working I feel like there are so
many different cleansers out there for
every skin type imaginable which is
great and they all do serve their
purpose but for the sake of kind of like
just stripping back the routine and
sticking to a simple routine I highly
recommend just picking a simple cleanser
as I said picking a good cleanser can be
really tough but to start with I feel
like
the keywords look out for our gentle and
for sensitive skin this usually means
that the cleanser overall isn’t overly
stripping it’s not drying and it’s
friendly for all skin types all the
cleansers you see here offer gentle yet
really effective cleansing okay let’s
talk about toning and hydration I’m
about to talk about product that a lot
of people don’t feel is necessary and I
am gonna be talking about this from
personal experience and it’s not a
necessity in a routine
whatsoever but this is my channel and I
feel like this stage really really did
make a difference in the appearance of
my skin as far as how plump it looks as
far as how hydrated it looked how bright
it looked and also how the other
products in my routine reacted with this
stage when it comes to toners I would
recommend getting yourself a very simple
hydrating toner a toner that you could
add to a cotton pad or the palms of your
hand
that adds hydration and moisture to your
cleansed skin I love putting toner onto
damp skin and then passing in the toner
but still keeping it down these toners
often help prep your skin for the rest
of your routine I always find that when
I use a toner my skin looks really
refreshed and glowing throughout the day
there something about applying a
products to dry skin that just doesn’t
have the same look or feel as applying
products to damn’d hydrated skin is
damped a word dampened we obviously want
to avoid the old-fashioned alcohol heavy
astringent so think clean and clear
Clearasil and we want to stay clear of
cute fragrance mists and waters that
could really irritate your skin so I
would say if your toner is like an odd
car like purple or green just kind of
avoid it if it’s like any crazy color
and if it smells nice if it smells
lovely I would avoid it too
here’s some tones I love and again will
suit most skin types so there is of
course a nother kind of toner and this
is an exfoliating toner this will be
your exfoliating step 1 2 or 3 times a
week
those were dry skin and uneven texture
could really really benefit from an A H
a an alpha hydroxy acid and those with
more oily congested skin could really
really benefit from a pH a beats a
hydroxy acid but you can use both H a
roof or the surface PHA for deeper down
in the pores to put it very simply I
personally use both I use a H a once a
week to target
uneven skin tone any pigmentation left
on the skin and then I’ll use that BHA
to go deeper into my congested pores and
help clear that out these are products
again that you want to keep very very
simple and I would invest a little bit
more here
no gimmicky overly fragrance and glow
tonics or a miracle toners nothing like
that again here are some my favorite
chemical exfoliator –zz the price
points are a little bit higher but I
feel like you need a good well
formulated product when it comes to the
chemical exfoliator –zz moving on to
possibly my favorite stage of the
skincare routine and this is the
treatment stage so this is where you’re
gonna use products like serums and pools
spots and acne treatment usually goes
here as well prescription skincare
retinol I would say any product that
really targets a very specific skincare
concern there are so many treatments and
serums out there it can be really
overwhelming and I feel like this is
where a lot of us get confused and a lot
of the questions I get is people asking
if they need to use a certain product
and they’re always the treatment serum
stage so things like hyaluronic acid
niacinamide azelaic acid retinol this is
where the actives comes in and we don’t
really know what we can use with other
ingredients what we can’t use with
others what’s gonna sensitize our skin
all that kind of stuff this bit I feel
it’s like the most confusing and this is
wellies a lot of us including myself too
buying products that we don’t really
know what to do with and when and how to
use it so my advice here would be to
pick two main skincare goals so for me I
want to even out my skin tone I want to
strengthen my skin barrier so I’m going
to be primarily using my vitamin C serum
to help even out my skin tone and bring
some brightness back into my sometimes a
dull skin and I’m going to be using a
propolis serum which is known to help
strengthen your skin barrier and hydrate
your skin and helps lock in all that
moisture all that kind of good stuff
that we want our skin barrier to do and
I’m going to be using these at once or
twice a day or whatever the brand
recommends you do with their product be
sure to check what ingredients you can
and cannot mix or with these products
I’ll link some videos below that LAIV is
out really clearly I haven’t done a
video on this before because I feel like
there are a lot of good videos out there
already that tells you what to avoid
mixing busting some myths about what you
can
mix but if you’re worried and confused
and it’s all a bit too much for you use
serums in the morning and then use
exfoliating acids in the evening on days
that you’re going to exfoliate this is
really where the only issues come in is
what you can and can’t use it of a H a
and B H a and then when it comes to
Sirians try and use one active and then
one product that’s not really an active
ingredient so there’s very little risk
that these two products are gonna
irritate your skin together the next
stage is to moisturize a moisturiser is
a product that every skin type can
benefit from this really doesn’t have to
be fancy and I feel like moisturizers
are product that people do get carried
away with as far as what’s in them you
could buy moisturizers with actives in
there’s loads of anti-aging moisturizers
out there that are just moisturizing
plumping ingredients because sometimes
of a vitamin C in them but really the
more basic at this stage the better all
we want from our moisturizer is to treat
dry skin lock in that water content and
in some cases even supplies some to our
skin a good moisturizer will contain
occlusives to lock in all the hydration
emollients to keep our skin soft and
smooth and humectants to draw in water
and keep our skin hydrated a lager
moisturizers also have asked in
restorative ingredients like ceramides
fatty acids things like that so be on
the lookout for those if you have very
very easily irritated skin and in
general they’re good for everyone if you
have very oily skin you may want to opt
for a gel type moisturizer but here’s my
personal favorite moisturizers as some
with very very oily skin but I do like
to layer up the heavy moisturizers in
the evening so on the top we have our
lighter moisturizers and on the bottom
you have your heavier moisturizers that
I tend to use as evening moisturizers
and finally sunscreen which I really do
feel and a lot of people feel as a
non-negotiable step this is obviously to
protect our skin and make sure that all
that skin care was actually worth doing
obviously you can buy your standalone
sunscreens but you could buy makeup and
moisturizers with SPF in them I used to
think that these weren’t really as good
as full-blown sunscreens but they do
kind of go through the same retesting as
sunscreen and they have to hold up to
the same standard as a sunscreen the
only problem with using sunscreens in
and makeup with sunscreen in is that you
usually don’t use enough to give
effective coverage so make
sure you’re using enough of that product
to get effective protection you’ll
probably find nowadays that a lot of
sunscreens and now sunscreens with
moisturizing factors in rather than
moisturizer with sunscreen in which is a
good thing it means for us oily skin
people in the summer wears a little bit
too warm to keep layering up your
products we can just use a sunscreen
with a moisturizing ingredients in and
that’s it they really are the
fundamentals of a basic routine and if
you just want to refresh your routine
and start from scratch this is what I
always do when I’m becoming a little bit
overwhelmed with all the products I
bought and just can’t see chopping and
changing my products one thing I do say
of course if you wear makeup and hope
for you’re wearing sunscreen every day I
do really really recommend a double
cleanse you can do that with a normal
cleanser just use it twice
I personally feel like a cleansing balm
or cleansing oil does a much better job
at getting rid of all that stuff so then
you can give your skin an effective
clean after I wouldn’t really make a
huge deal out of which one you’re gonna
buy they’re all pretty much the same I
do have a whole video on my favorite
first cleansing products and I’ll link a
few my favorite down below anyway but of
course this would be the very first
stage of an evening routine but yeah I
hope that was helpful in some way I feel
like all of us can get very very
overwhelmed especially if you’re like me
and you love skincare and buying it as
like a hobby for you it can get a bit
too much this is when I take a step back
follow this structure of a routine and
try and stick to it for at least a month
before you change up again but that’s it
for me now guys I will see you next time
