Common Skincare Mistakes | Exfoliation, Double Cleansing | Skincare Tips, Skincare Routine 2020
hey guys welcome back to my channel for today’s video i thought it would be fun to talk through common skincare mistakes that many people make including myself so i’m gonna drag myself through the mud in this video as well because these are all things that i used to do at one point or another in my skincare past unfortunately which is why we’re also calling this skincare regrets we’ve all been there so if you guys want to hear some very common skincare mistakes and things that you can do instead to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your skincare routine and the products that you’re using you’re in the right spot let’s jump right into it okay so as i started to write down the list of ideas that i have for this video i was breaking things off into categories and as you can imagine the sunscreen category started to grow very very long so i decided that i was not going to include sunscreen in this video because i think it warrants its own separate video so if you guys are interested i can definitely do a part two follow up on sunscreen regrets and common sunscreen mistakes so no sunscreen for today’s video we have a lot of other things to get through all right let’s start off with the first category which is our nighttime skincare routine and things that we do at night that are not so great for our skin the first regret that i have is using makeup wipes both for makeup removal and as cleanser yes i know the second one is definitely more alarming than the first but either way i personally don’t recommend makeup wipes for makeup removal number one they’re not environmentally friendly so that’s definitely its own argument as to why we shouldn’t use them but number two makeup wipes are just not the most gentle effective way to remove makeup oftentimes makeup wipes are filled with really irritating ingredients fragrances essential oils but aside from that they’re not the most effective way to fully remove our makeup and oftentimes we’re left with remaining residue on the skin and if that’s all you’re doing for a cleanse heebie-jeebies because i definitely used to do that and think that that was enough and that was good but when we’re left with residue on the skin and then we move on to the rest of our skin care routine we are essentially trapping in that residue that bacteria with our thicker skin care products that we’re layering on top definitely not ideal and there are so many other alternatives to makeup wipes out there which is great it’s not like you have to use something that’s super unpleasant and give up the luxury of a makeup wipe there are really great options out there that you probably will actually like more once you make the switch i definitely used to think that makeup wipes were the best way to remove makeup and everything else is like i’m not interested but once i started trying other methods i realized i actually don’t even really like the feeling of makeup wipes and that they do actually irritate my skin i have always gravitated towards a micellar water because i prefer the way that this removes eye makeup when i use some sort of microfiber towel with it so i got both of these off of amazon i’ll link these below i have makeup erasers face halos they all work and are more gentle than using a cotton oval or washcloth or cotton towel on the eyes with this when i use this with a microfiber towel i personally find that it’s the quickest way for me to remove eye makeup when i try to go in with a balm or oil or cream on mascara number one i just personally hate the way that that feels putting those products on dry mascara oh my gosh i don’t know what it is i cannot be the only one if any of you guys know what i’m talking about i just don’t like the way that feels but i also feel like it just ends up making a huge mess on my face that takes longer to clean up than just this combination and it ends up getting in my eyes and i wear contacts so then it clouds up my contacts and then my contacts sometimes fall out it’s just it’s a mess so i’ve had questions asking why i always recommend this that is why but that doesn’t mean that you have to use this for makeup removal on your face if you also prefer this on your eyes you could use something else on your face if you prefer the feeling of that you know there’s no rules here and there are so many other products out there that are great that you can use for makeup removal that don’t fall in the micellar water category that you could use for your face or also for your eyes if you’re not crazy like me of course these are not the only products that are good but these are just ones that i would recommend because i really enjoy the first is the ordinary squalling cleanser i think that one is great i really really like the texture of that because it’s not too thick and occlusive and it just melts down really nicely for something a little bit thicker and more moisturizing this pond’s fragrance free cold cream is such a great affordable option it’s so inexpensive and it works really well of course the inky list oat cleansing balm i have to mention i know that this is a fan favorite this is definitely the thickest out of all of them it gives me vaseline vibes for sure so if you don’t like that kind of formulation this one is not for you but if you’re okay with that or maybe you really enjoy it it is nice and it has some really nice healing ingredients in there get out of my frame and then this isn’t tree micellar melting cleansing oil i think is a great cleansing oil that’s fragrance free and one that doesn’t feel too greasy on the skin so i will also link videos below where i review these products if you guys are interested to hear more about them but those are some that i think are awesome places to start if you need a makeup remover that is not a makeup wipe and the second makeup wipe regret that i have is just using that makeup wipe as a cleanser so at the very least if you’re somebody that cannot ditch makeup wipes no matter what i would recommend going in with a facial cleanser after to make sure that all of that residue is off of your face and your skin is properly cleansed before moving on with the rest of your skincare routine the second nighttime skincare regret that i have which i’m sure many people can relate to is sleeping and makeup oh man i was notorious for this in college i’m sure a lot of you guys have been there as well after a long night out it’s super late maybe you’re gonna get some junk food pizza with your friends and then just pass out and not remove your makeup i used to wake up with a full face of makeup i remember people would be like how does your makeup look so good at eight in the morning and i’m like i didn’t take it off actually no oh my gosh i actually just got the chills i would never ever do that now no matter what even if i have a night out with friends which obviously hasn’t been in a really long time we’re not going to talk about it i will remove my makeup there are many reasons why it’s not good for our skin to sleep in makeup and i’m sure many of those reasons are very obvious to a lot of people but for any of you that are trying to convince yourself that it’s okay from time to time i will still include it here so the first reason is if you’re acne prone that is a surefire way to encourage a breakout to form because you are locking in any dirt bacteria oil sweat with that makeup staying on your face all day long oh gosh i’m like thinking about sleeping in makeup i don’t know how i used to do this and not feel icky you know that’s not to say you guys are icky if you do that but just thinking about it now i feel like by the end of the day whenever i wear makeup i feel like i need to rip my makeup off my face and put on my skincare because i feel like my skin can’t breathe but anyway so if you’re acne prone and you’re consistently sleeping in makeup that absolutely could be a reason why you’re continuing to break out and you’re not able to heal your skin and then of course if we’re sleeping in our makeup that means we’re foregoing our pm skincare routine and if you have skin care goals things that you’re trying to achieve aside from acne like fading dark spots or helping to improve your skin’s texture and tone and you’re sleeping in your makeup that means that you are not applying products to help you to achieve those results and it’s just going to take even longer for you to get there so if you want the skin of your dreams don’t sleep in the makeup the next mistake actually takes place in bed after your pm skincare routine is done so even if you have the most amazing pm skincare routine in check complete you have your tretinoin on this can still be an issue and it’s sleeping on a cotton pillowcase instead of one that is satin or silk i’ve said this before in case any of you guys are new i will never forget i was listening to a podcast where a dermatologist was talking and she said that she can tell by looking at her patients faces which side of their face they sleep on because the wrinkles and fine lines are always more pronounced on that side of their face and that a way that you can minimize some of that is by using a satin or silk pillow case which is going to be gentler and softer on the skin than something like cotton obviously no matter what if we are sleeping on our face we’re applying pressure fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable but a way that you can improve your odds a little bit is by sleeping on something that is softer and gentler for the skin obviously best case scenario is sleeping on your back because then you’re not applying pressure to either side of your face but i simply cannot do that i simply cannot it’s not in the cards for me right now i wish if any of you guys are back sleepers i’m so jealous i i just can’t fall asleep like that i actually i have to give myself a pat on the back because this past year i trained myself to switch from sleeping on my stomach to my side which is a huge accomplishment for me because for 25 years i was a stomach sleeper i was just reading about how sleeping on your stomach can make you have more pronounced under eye circles and also make you more likely to have headaches and since i switched to sleeping on my side i’ve noticed an improvement in both of those things i have to say so i feel i feel better about that one day i will try to be a back sleeper but for now i’m gonna sleep on a satin pillowcase so i just have one from amazon here that i will link in the description box below it comes in many other colors i thought that you know gray was fitting for obvious reason and this one is satin not silk so i was reading somewhere that silk is more likely to absorb our skincare than satin is i don’t know if that’s fully true or not but that’s why i decided to purchase satin but both satin and silk work great and aside from this being gentler on her skin it’s also gentler on her hair so that is one of my top recommendations for ways to help your hair to grow long and strong sleep on a satin pillowcase i will link my hair growth video below if you guys want to know more about that and the last nighttime mistake also has to do with pillowcases and it’s not washing your pillowcases enough so of course if we’re not washing our pillowcases the bacteria from our skin is just going to live on them until the next time we do wash them and if you’re somebody that’s acne prone that again is a surefire way to encourage a breakout is that going to be the sole reason for your breakouts no of course there are so many things that go into why we break out i’ll link some of my acne videos below if you guys need help in that department but making sure that you wash your pillowcases is a way to help yourself at least and not worse in the situation so these pillowcases that i just showed you guys come in a set of two i would recommend just purchasing a couple sets of them so that you just have them ready to go so you can change out your pillowcases more frequently and then you don’t have to wait for the wash alright let’s move on to the next mistake category which is application so mistakes that people often make and that i used to make when applying skin care products the first is applying serums and moisturizers to dry skin instead of damp skin i feel like this is something that has definitely started to gain popularity so i’m sure a lot of you watching this have already heard about this or are learning about it now and it’s that the most effective way to apply serums and moisturizers is to apply them onto damp skin and not dry skin and one of the biggest reasons for that is the humectant ingredients and our serums and moisturizers so humectants are ingredients that are water binding meaning they help our skin to retain water they make our skin look more plump and hydrated temporarily examples of humectants are things like glycerin and hyaluronic acid which you’ve heard me say a million times on this channel at this point but those ingredients work most effectively when they actually have water to bind onto so in order to maximize hydration it is best to apply products like that to damp skin it definitely feels weird at first if you’ve just been used to applying products like that to dry skin your entire life and then you try to apply it to wet skin it almost feels like it’s not working as well but it’s actually the opposite it’s working better the next mistake is using a physical exfoliant on the face different people definitely have different opinions on this but after the research that i’ve done my personal opinion is that physical exfoliants are just too harsh on her skin pose too much risk for irritation and sensitivity and just are not necessary in a skincare routine we can still exfoliate our skin but chemically with things like alpha hydroxy acids beta-hydroxy acids we don’t need a physical exfoliant to do that and kind of i mean it’s not the same exact thing as a moisturizer on damp versus dry skin but i feel like it’s similar in the sense that it tricks you using a physical exfoliant like a clarisonic or any other cleansing brush any sort of scrub that has actual particles in it that feel gritty and like they’re really cleaning your skin it creates the illusion of cleaner skin but actually it can just be really disrupting and damaging the skin barrier and causing irritation that’s completely unnecessary and we can just use our regular cleanser and our hands and that is a perfectly effective way to properly clean our skin i actually talked about this in my reaction video to sarah’s day skincare routine so if you haven’t seen that one yet i will link that below if you are just curious to hear my thoughts on that a little bit more what i would recommend instead is using some sort of chemical exfoliant so not only is that going to be a gentler way to exfoliate your skin than a cleansing brush or a scrub but it can also allow you to see some really amazing benefits to your skin so improving texture tone helping to improve acne size and appearance of pores help with anti-aging you’re not going to get those benefits from a physical exfoliant and actually that physical exfoliant may worsen some of those problems so some options that i have for chemical exfoliants that i think are great places to start are two from the ordinary which are very popular their lactic acid and hyaluronic acid formulation and their alpha hydroxy acid and bha peeling solution i have a comparison review on both of these products if you want to know more about them and which one may be best for you both great places to start another brand that has some awesome exfoliants at affordable prices is a brand that i actually discovered based off of one of your recommendations and that is geek and gorgeous i will definitely be doing reviews on this brand coming up soon so stay tuned for that but for now a couple that i think are great are there smooth out exfoliant which has 12 aha and cactus liquid and they’re calmed down exfoliant which has four percent pha and bha in it okay the last two mistakes that i wanted to bring up are things that are pretty similar to the pillowcase situation i think because they seem like no-brainers almost like why am i even bringing that up but i feel like they’re really easy to forget about and just easy fixes the first is forgetting to wash your hands before you cleanse your face again feels very self-explanatory but super important to use some sort of antibacterial soap before you are going ahead and putting your hands on your face especially if you’re acne prone we don’t want to put bacteria and dirt and oils onto our skin wash the hands first then cleanse the face and on that same note if you are using a towel to soak up some excess moisture after you cleanse your skin so that your face isn’t dripping wet before you apply serums and moisturizers dripping what’s not ideal we want it to be damp so a little bit of towel padding is totally fine that’s something i do but you want to make sure that that towel is freshly cleaned not the towel that you have been using to wipe your hands on not the towel that you were using to wipe off your body after the shower something that is freshly cleaned don’t reuse the same washcloth over and over again same idea as the pillowcase then we just have bacteria living on there until we have one that is freshly cleaned so i feel like there are things like that that a lot of people can probably get away with and not break out because they’re not acne prone lucky you if that’s the case but especially if you are make sure you have just clean everything around you and even if you’re not don’t you want to treat your skin with some respect keep it clean okay um okay i don’t know what i was thinking because i actually have two more categories that i wanted to talk through with you guys with just as many bullet points under each category meaning this video would be twice as long as it already is which can’t happen because this video is already too long so we’re going to cut it off here and i guess make this a three-part series because i definitely want to share the next two categories with you guys we have some juicy stuff in those categories relating to acne and blackheads and also purchasing decisions so the way in which we buy products which i feel like is a really fun one so sorry to leave you guys hanging like that but also i don’t want to make this video an hour long so stay tuned for part two that will be coming soon but for now i hope that you guys enjoyed this video and found it helpful if you did please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up subscribe and click on that notification bell and it would mean so much to me if you sent my channel to a friend let me know your thoughts in the comments below have you also made some of
