Cerave Skincare Routine For Normal to Oily, Acne Prone Skin | Best Cerave Products for Oily Skin

hey guys welcome back to my channel for today’s video i thought it would be fun to kind of do a one brand challenge if you will so putting together a morning and nighttime skincare routine using only one brand and what better brand to start off with than serbia of course i know so many of you guys love sarah b also are we surprised everything’s knocked over already we’re not surprised i know so many of you guys that love the brand cerave myself included it’s such a great brand as far as the ingredients goes but it’s also affordable and accessible to so many people so i thought this would be fun content to create even if you’re not on the hunt for a cerave only skincare routine hopefully this can help you to figure out what sorts of cerave products might be best for your skin type so for today’s video i decided to just focus on normal to oily skin and also acne prone skin i will definitely do a part two for dry skin don’t worry i’m not forgetting about you guys but this video would just be way too long if i included all skin types and ones so if you want to see some syrupy products that might be good for your normal to oily skin and or acne prone skin you are in the right spot let’s jump right into it okay obviously i have to address this setup because i’m no longer sitting directly in front of my bed thank goodness oh my gosh you guys so much has changed in the last couple weeks i feel like i should do a get ready with me life update and talk about it more there let me know if you guys are interested in that i can definitely do that but long story short eli and i actually moved apartments into a larger unit which i am so so relieved about i can’t even tell you guys it just was way too much we’re both working from home for the foreseeable future so a one bedroom apartment with two adults working from home and also living in no it just doesn’t work so that is why we’re in a new setup i’m so excited this is definitely not the permanent setup you guys will have to let me know what you think as far as backgrounds like what should i do i just pulled some stuff in for now temporarily since we literally just moved yesterday yeah i’m exhausted but this will be my backdrop for the next few videos until i figure that out and i can probably have a few different ones actually since i have quite a bit of space now so that is why we’re in a new spot had to get that out of the way now let’s jump into the actual video okay before we actually start to jump into this routine i do want to quickly clarify one thing and that is that just because i’m putting together this video using only one brand doesn’t mean that i’m suggesting that in order to have the best skincare routine it needs to be made up of only one brand that’s actually not what i would normally recommend i think you’re gonna be better off picking and choosing products from different brands that actually have product types formulations and ingredients that your skin really needs the issue when you’re only selecting from one specific brand is that a lot of times brands focus on a subset of key ingredients and then may not have other things that your skin could actually benefit from if that makes sense so this is more so just fun content that i thought you guys would enjoy i actually get asked this question a lot over on tick tock so side note if you guys don’t follow me on tic tac you definitely should i post frequently over there but asking if i can put together cerave only skincare routines for skin types same thing with other brands so i thought this could just be a fun series and again if nothing else give you guys some ideas for products that you may really enjoy based on your skin type okay enough blabbering i just wanted to make sure to clarify all those things because i feel like i would get questions on that let’s actually dive into this routine let’s start off with our morning skincare routine and start off with the first step which is to cleanse um okay so i actually have three different cleansers for you guys to choose from please don’t think this means that i’m saying you need three cleansers if you have normal to oily acne prone skin definitely not but depending on what your skin needs are i have a few different options so let’s talk through them for those of you that are acne prone or have congested pores and are looking to help to unclog those pores and prevent breakouts i have two different cleanser options for you guys that are really great the first is their acne foaming cream cleanser this one actually has four percent benzoyl peroxide in it benzoyl peroxide is a great ingredient for acne actually helps to kill the acne bacteria on the skin so not only does that have this ingredient but it also has three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid which are in ulcerative products and niacinamide niacinamide is an incredible ingredient if you’re acne prone not only does it help to reduce that excessive sebum production but it also helps to calm and soothe the skin so if you have incredibly inflamed red irritated skin and niacinamide may be something that really helps you it’s also not just an oily skin ingredient it has so many different benefits that all skin types could benefit from but those are some of the ways in which niacinamide can help normal to oily acne prone skin so great cleanser the other is their renewing sa cleanser so instead of benzoyl peroxide the active ingredient here is salicylic acid unfortunately they don’t disclose a percentage of salicylic acid in this cleanser so i can’t directly comment on that but in short salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid or bha if you’re familiar with that abbreviation and it helps to prevent pores from getting clogged so really great if you have congested pores so both of these cleansers are great options for oily acne prone skin and if you’re wondering if one may be better for you than the other depending on the type of acne that you have long story short yes i actually already have a video up talking about that topic and i’m specifically comparing contrasting these two cleansers as far as the formulation and ingredients and which one is best for specific types of acne so i will link that below i won’t repeat myself here since i already have an entire video on it and it warrants a whole separate video for that topic but these are both great options again it just depends on the type of acne that you have if you don’t currently experience breakouts but you want that exfoliation benefit i still think this essay cleanser is a great cleanser option to throw into your routine again even if you don’t have acne it’s a great way to help to prevent your pores from getting clogged and quickly how i suggest using both of these is leaving them on the skin for several minutes so what i actually like to do when i’m using one of them i don’t use them at the same exact time but whenever i’m using one i will actually put it on my skin before i get in the shower leave it on my skin for my entire shower and then rinse it off after but not with the piping hot water from the shower our skin does not need that or like that the last cleanser that i have is going to be for those of you that are not on the lookout for a cleanser with active ingredients so maybe you don’t suffer from acne lucky you if that’s the case or maybe you get active ingredients and other products or maybe those ingredients cause irritation for you whatever the case may be this is going to be the cleanser for you if any of those things that hold true so it’s their foaming facial cleanser i know so many people love this and it’s for good reason it’s probably one of my top five all-time favorite cleansers oh it’s just such a staple for me so a couple different reasons why i love this so much number one the formulation is just really nice so it’s gel like it lathers up really well it just effectively cleanses my skin i’ve never really understood why it says foaming because foaming to me indicates that there’s like a bubbly foam but in this case it’s just a gel formulation that lathers really well which i personally really enjoy and in doing that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry or stripped which is very important regardless of what skin type you have so i think the bummer about a lot of oily skin products is that they can be filled with drying irritating ingredients to help to kind of combat that excessive sebum production and absorb some of those oils and while i have combo skin that leans oily and i enjoy products that do help to control my oils a little bit i still don’t want to use something that’s going to strip my skin and leave it feeling dry and tight and irritated so the cleansing agents that are in this are effective yet gentle and that’s definitely something that’s important to me and something that i look out for so that’s why i think this is a great option for normal to oily skin and even if you have sensitive skin something that you could use i mean i don’t have a way of predicting if this is going to irritate your skin or not so obviously take that with a grain of salt and the only way to know is to test something out yourself but i’ve been loving this for a long time it’s just great oh this does also have niacinamide in it i didn’t say that of course with any kind of cleanser i’m less focused on the ingredients than i would be with let’s say a moisturizer or a serum that you leave on the skin especially something like this it doesn’t have active ingredients that you’re rinsing off immediately our skin just has very limited time to be exposed to that ingredient so we’re not going to see benefits in the same way that we would with let’s say a serum with niacinamide added but don’t get me wrong it’s always a nice touch that makes me excited after i cleanse in the morning i always go in with some sort of antioxidant vitamin c serum and i have to say i don’t love cereb’s vitamin c serum for oily skin you definitely could try it again keep in mind i have combo skin that leans oily and i’ve enjoyed it i think it feels nice but it’s part of their skin renewing line which is definitely focused on those with dry skin because these products all have really nice moisturizing ingredients in them which are great but just may not be for you if you’re super oily i do have a dedicated review due i said that’s so weird i do have a dedicated review on this product as well and i did see comments from some of you that have really oily skin that say it just doesn’t work for you so i’m not going to spend a ton of time here this is a perfect example of where you may just be better off picking and choosing different products from different brands so maybe using a vitamin c from dermatology which is my favorite i will link that below or the ordinary anything else that has a formulation that you find that suits your skin better of course there are so many other serums out there that you can use aside from vitamin c you don’t have to use a vitamin c serum but that’s pretty much the only serum that cerave has that i feel like fits into a morning skincare routine so that’s why i included that after serum the next step is to moisturize the skin and you can actually go about this in a couple different ways it’s totally going to be up to you and your personal preference what i like to do is use a separate moisturizer first one that’s lightweight for the morning and then go in with my sunscreen if you feel that that is too much for your skin if you’re incredibly oily you could ditch the separate moisturizer and just use a sunscreen that has added moisturizing ingredients in it that is totally fine again just up to you so if you do want a moisturizer that’s good for daytime though this is the one that i would recommend funny enough it’s their pm facial moisturizing lotion i get questions about this if you can use this in the morning yes you definitely can that is my personal favorite way to use it it’s so good oh my gosh so the formula of this is just my perfect daytime moisturizer it’s very lightweight but not to the point where as you’re blending into the skin it feels like water and doesn’t moisturize your skin enough that can definitely happen with extremely lightweight moisturizers this one is lightweight yet leaves my skin feeling moisturized all day oh my goodness it works great under makeup great under sunscreen i don’t experience peeling when i use this ever and it’s not something that makes those products the sunscreen and foundation or whatever kind of makeup that you’re using look shiny or greasy at all it definitely doesn’t do that but again it’s still moisturizing my skin so one of the many reasons why i love this stuff and it also has added niacinamide which of course makes me even more excited in this case because we are leaving this on the skin so i would definitely look into this one if you want a nice daytime moisturizer you could also use this at night if you wanted to but especially my favorite for the daytime and the very last step in our morning skincare routine is sunscreen and this one is a non-negotiable i know that a lot of times those with oily skin feel like it’s difficult to find a sunscreen that works well for them a lot of times sunscreens have a very glowy finish or sometimes borderline look oily on the skin and just don’t sit well on top of oily skin but i have one for you if you feel like that’s the case for you it’s their ultra light moisturizing lotion this one has broad spectrum spf 30 it says it moisturizes and it helps to restore the protective skin barrier and that has a matte finish so i don’t know that i would fully agree that this has a matte finish when i think of a matte sunscreen i think of something like the coats prime and protect sunscreens i have a review on that brand that i’ll link below if you’re interested or the australian gold sunscreen those are really good at absorbing excess oils almost to the point where it can make your skin look a little bit flat which i don’t always love unless i have some nice hydrators underneath it this one doesn’t do quite that however it doesn’t have that really dewy glowy finish that a lot of other sunscreens have so i think this is perfect for those of you that have normal to oily skin it’s such a nice one and i love the formula of this it’s definitely my favorite formulation out of any serum sunscreen and that’s because it’s a chemical sunscreen so the active ingredients are chemical filters in particular avobenzone homosalate octa salad and octagoline the thing to keep in mind with this is unfortunately if you have sensitive skin this may not work for you and that’s because chemical filters are definitely more so known to cause irritation and sensitive skin types than mineral filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and avobenzone in particular is known for being notoriously irritating so that doesn’t mean that’s going to be the case for everybody you may be able to use this without any irritation at all and if that’s the case for you i think this is such a good one to include in your morning skincare routine oh it’s good and that is it for the morning skincare routine which i know is a very basic routine but there’s nothing wrong with basic if you’re using products that have proven ingredients and great formulations and all you do in the morning is cleanse your skin moisturize and use sunscreen you’re doing great you’re doing great sweetie that’s really all you need at the end of the day can you add other products that can benefit your skin absolutely and that’s where again you may want to look to other brands but as far as what cerave has to offer i think that that is a solid morning skincare routine so let’s move on to the pm and that very first step in our pm skincare routine is to use a product that’s designed to remove makeup and or sunscreen and there are so many different makeup removal products out there these days cleansing oils cleansing balms cold creams the list goes on but cerave actually doesn’t have that many options for makeup removal so they do have their newer cream to foam cleanser that also removes makeup i have a review on that that i’ll link below if you want to know more on that however i know that for those that have oily skin using a creamy or balmy or oily makeup removal product is not always what’s preferred sometimes people with oily skin want something that’s super lightweight and i totally understand that so i have an option for you if that’s the case and it’s their hydrating micellar water so this one says it’s an ultra gentle cleanser it cleanses hydrates and removes makeup without disrupting the skin barrier this one actually also has niacinamide this i want to clarify i want to clarify my recommendation and it’s that i am just recommending this for makeup removal i do not recommend using a micellar water as your only cleanse i don’t think it’s the best way to cleanse the skin however i think it is a really nice option for those that are extremely oily to remove that makeup and sunscreen before going in with an actual cleanser and when it comes to a micellar water i’m a lot less critical of the ingredient label than i am with any other product don’t get me wrong i’m still on the lookout for irritants or fragrance and essential oils which we don’t have with any syrupy products anyway but aside from that i don’t really stress about the addition of nice ingredients because this is in contact with my skin even less than a cleanser because it’s truly just for makeup removal so while i like the addition of ceramides and glycerin to hydrate niacinamide it’s just immediately coming off my skin so what i am concerned with is that i use a micellar water that doesn’t leave my skin feeling irritated it doesn’t sting and that it effectively removes my makeup and is a quick easy process how i personally like to use a micellar water is in combination with some sort of microfiber towel like this i will link this one below i have a couple others that i will link below as well that i enjoy this one’s nice because it’s really nice and long i talked about this in a recent amazon favorites video but a microfiber towel is so soft and gentle on the skin so i will put warm water on this then add my cellar water and then go ahead and remove any makeup or sunscreen it comes off so quickly such an easy way to remove makeup especially eye makeup and mascara so great option if you’re oily and want something incredibly lightweight but again don’t use this as a cleanser the next step is to use a cleanser to remove water-based impurities like sweat and dirt and if you did use the sa cleanser or the benzoyl peroxide cleanser in the morning i would recommend switching to the foaming facial cleanser at night so that your skin is not going to be irritated by the addition of a retinoid with those ingredients and if you did use this in the morning you absolutely can just use this at night as well there’s no reason to use multiple cleansers unless of course you’re trying to treat target acne or you have other kinds of concerns that you’re trying to address but if this works well for you you don’t need to use something separate in the morning and night no reason for that it’s a great cleanser we can absolutely use it twice a day after that we’re going to go ahead and apply our retinoid i swear by retinoids it’s another non-negotiable for me sunscreen is my non-negotiable for the morning retinoids are my non-negotiable for night i do have a video that i uploaded recently talking all about retinoids that i will link below if you want more help there retinol versus tretinoin versus retinaldehyde and the benefits that retinol will bring to your skin so many it’s just it’s the gold standard for anti-aging so when it comes to cerave they have a couple different retinol options so the first is their skin renewing retinol serum and the second is the resurfacing retinol serum which i personally think is better for oily skin types the first reason is because the formula is just a little bit more lightweight and it has that really nice gel like finish oh it feels good and other than that it does have niacinamide added to it as well as licorice root which helps to calm and brighten the skin if you want to see an in-depth comparison review on this retinol versus cerave’s other retinal serum i already did that for you i will link that one below as well but for what it’s worth i think that if you have oily skin you’ll prefer this one and the very last step is to go ahead and apply a moisturizer if you’re wondering if you can apply your moisturizer before your retinol you absolutely can i’m going to be talking about that in a follow-up to that tretinoin video that i posted about ways that you can minimize irritation and that is one of the ways is to apply moisturizer before your retinol kind of as a protective seal so you can definitely do that but if it doesn’t irritate your skin to apply retinol first then i would recommend doing that same thing goes for moisturizer as the cleanser there is no reason that you can’t use the same moisturizer at night that you used in the morning so you can definitely just use their pm facial moisturizing lotion i know that for some of you that have very oily skin this is your pm moisturizer and you feel it’s too heavy for you for the morning so that’s a great way to use it if you want something though that is a little bit thicker and a little bit more occlusive then i would recommend checking out their daily moisturizing lotion i think the reason to consider two separate moisturizers for morning and night is just that typically we prefer lighter weight moisturizers during the day to wear underneath makeup and underneath sunscreen but at night we may want something that just feels a little bit more moisturizing and nourishing and if that’s the case for you then this daily moisturizing lotion is a perfect next option the downside to this is that it doesn’t have niacinamide added to it like this pm moisturizing lotion does so if that’s an important ingredient to you just keep that in mind we of course are getting it in that retinol if you’re using the cerave retinol serum if not you could just use a separate niacinamide serum if that’s a really important ingredient to you get your dose of niacinamide in that way and then use this moisturizer if you do prefer this formulation for night so pretty similar ingredient labels but again this one is just a little bit thicker and that’s it that is our entire skincare routine for normal to oily skin i hope that this was helpful for you guys and i hope that you enjoyed this video if you did please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up subscribe and click on that notification
