BEYOND THE JAR. Episode 4: Science and sense – CHANEL Skincare
The values of the House are excellence and quality, and we also apply them to our skincare products. This process is all about balance. We’re looking for the right combination of botanical ingredients for efficacy and functional ingredients for sensoriality.
We meticulously choose our ingredients based on their purity, composition and quality. Sensoriality is about sensations that spark an emotional response. The sensorial identity of a skincare product is expressed through its texture and fragrance.
Every phase is important from the moment you open the jar. Human beings are so complex and biologically unique. That’s why we always start with a blank page. We conduct around 30 product trials, sometimes twice that, as we did for Sublimage L’Essence Fondamentale, in order to achieve the perfect texture.
A double emulsion is a combination of 2 distinct elements: a precious oil and a melting butter. A double emulsion allows us to create a transformative texture that goes from feeling rich to creamy and helps skin feel nourished and firm.
Thanks to our questionnaires, we can identify the nature of the emotions women feel, while also identifying the markers of pleasure and well-being gleaned through more physiological or behavioral measures.
We are committed to meeting the needs of women around the world. That’s why we conduct numerous tests and sensorial evaluations across the different continents. Sensorial evaluation is a tool that allows us to work with the formulators in the development and optimization of the formula.
There are 5 senses, but we concentrate on sight, touch and smell. We evaluate the texture against these criteria: how the texture feels, how it feels on application and the effects on skin following application.
When a texture is truly enjoyable, you want to apply it more regularly. Over time, this is key for the efficacy of the product. The priority of CHANEL skincare is to infuse our formulas with the highest level of efficacy and the highest level of sensoriality in the service of health, beauty and well-being for women.
Our research and sensorial evaluations help us to better understand how the senses are linked to emotions. An emotion is an immediate and unconscious reaction to a specific stimulus; in this case, it can be a product, a fragrance or a cream.
Research at CHANEL is focused on identifying these sensorial drivers to facilitate the most precise formulation and achieve the optimal emotional response. With our locally sourced insights, we can develop globally relevant products.
There is an uncompromising tenacity that goes into the creation of every product.
