As we get older, the aging process takes place. There are a variety of factors that come into play. Number one is genetics; some people are predisposed to get more changes as they age because of genetics, also sun exposure plays a big role.
The things that we see, we get wrinkling, typically we see it on the face that’s quite pronounced. We also get mottleness of the skin, pigmentation of the skin that develops especially with sun exposure.
Fortunately as dermatologists, there’s a number of things that we can do to help our patients age better and prevent some of the processes that take place. Number one, as we always emphasize to patients, wearing sunscreen and sun protection measures such as staying out of the sun, especially in peak hours; that’s number one.
Number two, using proper skincare routines. Specifically dermatologic grade skincare routines can help improve some of the sings that we see with aging, and then there is procedures ranging from least invasive procedures to more invasive procedures helping to improve, again, the signs of aging.
Some of the common procedures we perform would be, again from a milder one such as chemical peels– just trying to exfoliate and remove some of the upper layers of the skin and improve the appearance.
Lasers–there are a variety of lasers, for example, lasers such as broadband light technology can help to improve the pigmentation and the dark spots in the face and in the skin in general. There’s lasers such as profractional lasers and fractionated technology which help to remove layers of the skin more aggressively than the chemical peels, and they improve the texture and overall look of the skin.
There there’s procedures that the dermatologist would do, for example Botox, which usually helps to improve wrinkles on the upper third of the face, the forehead, the smile lines, the Crow’s Feet lines, and the glabellar lines–that’s what Botox is used for.
Then there’s also fillers–soft tissue wrinkle fillers which really help to fill in the volume in some of the sort of areas that we’d use specifically would be lines around the mouth called the smile lines, the fillers can be used around the cheeks, so for example, to improve and augment the cheeks.
There’s also a lot of different other areas that we can use them for.
