A Healing Vlog 🍞🌾 (moving, skincare routine, cooking) ft. Mama Vu
You know that feeling when you’re on a long plane ride and you keep trying to fall asleep because you’d rather be unconscious than deal with the discomfort? Hm– I guess that’s an outdated example by today’s standards.
That discomfort does seem somewhat of a luxury now. Either way, that’s how I felt for most of 2020. I fell into a deep depression in the later months of last year. It was probably the worst I’ve ever been mentally.
With the stress of my living situation, body image, interpersonal relationships, and overall loss of self-assuredness, life became bleak. It was difficult to do things I once enjoyed like playing with makeup and filming.
Being alone, I couldn’t get out of my own head. Quarantine revealed to me the severity of issues I had always known existed within myself, but never felt the need to address. In December, I admitted to my mom for the first time that I wasn’t doing ok.
So she came to live with me. MOM: Oh, you’re filming us eating too? JESS: Mhm! MOM: Ha! JESS: What? I’ve always been pretty self-reliant, and asking for help makes me extremely uncomfortable. But my mom is someone I know I can always rely on.
Doing small things together made me happy. I always like sharing new skincare with my mom, especially since we both have sensitive skin so products that work for me usually work for her. JESS: All over JESS: Mhm MOM: Oh, and? JESS: Mom! JESS: The way you hit your face Lately, I’ve been using this moisturizer from Function of Beauty, whom I’m partnering with today to share their customizable skincare.
Isn’t the packaging so pretty? I’m a control freak, so being able to pick from all of the formula options with different skin goals and even picking the name on the bottles was super satisfying. This is the skincare quiz I took, and I’m going to show you how I customized my moisturizer.
First, the basics– and then you can choose 3 skincare goals. I chose hydrating, soothing, and tightening. I also chose a fragrance-free lotion formula, which was a nice option to have since I have sensitive skin.
I really like this lotion formula– it’s quick-absorbing while leaving your skin feeling very hydrated so, a perfect moisturizer to use right before applying makeup since you won’t have to wait for it to dry.
JESS: “Function of Jessy” MOM: “Function of–” MOM: Oh! JESS: ‘Cause they made it specifically for me MOM: Mm~ MOM: What is this for? JESS: Moisturizer MOM: Ah~ I’ll leave a link below which will give you 20% off your custom Function of Beauty moisturizer or a free headband if you get the full bundle.
JESS: Done! While the one thing my mom never has to worry about when she visits is skincare, the one thing I never have to worry about is food. JESS: What did you put in here? MOM: Soy sauce and seasoning powder JESS: Seasoning powder? MOM: Mhm! JESS: Can I do it? MOM: Hm? JESS: Can I try? MOM: Mhm MOM: Hold it like this– JESS: Like? MOM: Yeah MOM: Hold it like that– MOM: You see? It’s easier, right? JESS: Ehh I always learn new recipes and housekeeping tricks when my mom visits.
She was really proud of how well she cleaned my water-damaged couch. It’s funny because I kind of adopted my mom’s habits after I moved out on my own. Maybe I just began to associate clutter with her nagging, but now, I can’t stand a messy room.
JESS: Let me do it MOM: Move it where? MOM: Let’s put it here I just moved out of LA, so we both rushed to unpack. It was fun finding everything its own little corner. I think only after everything has its own place can you really find home in a new apartment.
Moving out of LA was a big decision for me, but I’ve wanted a change in environment for a while now, and as some of you know, my LA apartment was becoming unsafe, to say the least. So, welcome home.
I hope to make fond memories and find myself again here.
